Imagine having your wallet overflowing with cash. A split-second later, all of that money is gone and into the hands of marketers all because of well-placed advertisements. Did you know that in 2012, children ages eight to twenty-four, spent 211 billion dollars on items shown in advertisements? According to the 2012 Harris Youth Pulse, the purchasing power of today’s youth, is something that should not be overshadowed by the spending power of adults. Therefore, advertising techniques are used to specifically target younger audiences. Television has become an important part of entertainment and advertisements in our daily lives. Children are being exposed to many persuasive advertising commercials shown while they are viewing television. “The average American child today is exposed to an estimated 40,000 television commercials a year - over 100 a day,” the American Psychological Association exclaimed. Most parents do not realize the danger that children are getting into by eating too many daily calories.
