Week one at Meals on Wheels, and now for a taste of freedom and boiled cabbage, cruising the mean streets of Nowra. The first step was cleaning my car. The rubbish in the car has moulded itself into every nook and cranny over the years. I felt like I was a new breed of automotive palaeontologist as I uncovered the debris that defined the last 10 years of my life. It turned out the debris was as dull as my last 10 years. I parked at the back of the Meals on Wheels building, and my old Holden fitted in nicely with the eclectic collection of automotive misfits that comprised the Meals on Wheels fleet. Then I went into the reception area to sign on for my shift. I gave a cheery “Hi Angela, I hope you are feeling better” to the mound of knitting seated behind the …show more content…
Problem solved, and Laurie continues to get $100 each week.” “What does he spend the money on?” “The horses. He is a gambling addict. He lost his wife, kids, and everything else of any value in his life because he gambled on the horses.” “Do you think you should be encouraging his gambling?” “At this point, he has lost everything, so no, I don’t see any harm in putting a smile on his face. What else does he have to live for? Redemption. This isn’t one of your Shakespearean tragedies; it is just life, and life for Laurie is fucked except for” a big pause for effect “Harry’s buy, swap, and sell! That puts a narrow little straw through the pile of shit he is under so he can breathe a little fresh air.” A couple more food deliveries and prescription drug pickups, and we were finished with all the morning deliveries. We had an hour before we needed to start the afternoon deliveries. I had been rehearsing in my mind for some time what I needed to tell Harry. I turned to her and said, “Harry.” “Shut up,” she said before I could even start. “Now you can find out about the rest of the operation. Spoiler alert: You are

Home Delivered Meals Information System

...Semester 1999 Class Project: Home Delivered Meals Information System (HDMIS) Project Overview Allegheny County, like other American metropolitan areas, is facing the prospect of a “graying” population: the “baby boom” generation born in the middle 1940s – early 1960s is approaching retirement age and, while their parents’ generation is already retired, and the younger “baby bust” and “Generation X” cohorts are having fewer children than their immediate ancestors. In addition, Allegheny county, like most other metropolitan areas, is facing the “hollowing out” syndrome in which population has left the center city (in this case the city of Pittsburgh) for suburban areas as well as areas beyond the immediate Pittsburgh region. However, Pittsburgh, unlike most metropolitan areas, has also faced, and continues to face, stagnation in overall population growth: there are few in-migrants to replace those not born due to a low birth rate and those who leave for better opportunities elsewhere. Thus, the population of elderly is shifting from the city to the suburbs over time (see Figure 1 and http://www.hdm.heinz.cmu.edu). This information is quite relevant for one sector of the economy: that devoted to services for the elderly. As people age, they are more likely to be homebound and thus in need of home-delivered services such as physical therapy, home cleaning, full-time nursing care and home-delivered meals. It is the last home-delivered service that...

Ppa Meads Eoq Paper

...1. An analysis was done of the Meals on Wheels Center's Purchase Orders for canned green beans to calculate the Economic Order Quantity (EOQ). This was done to predict the optimal balance between order costs and carrying costs. 2. The calculations determined that 1,549 cans should be ordered at a time. There should be 19 orders each year. 3. When ordering at the EOQ of 19 orders, the total ordering costs were $387.30 and total carrying costs were also $387.30. 4. The carrying costs when ordering all 30,000 cans at start of year is $7,500.00. This cost is significantly higher when compared to the EOQ's Carrying Costs of $387.30. The loss would be $7,112.70. Even though a single order would save $367.30 in Order Costs, it is nowhere near enough to offset the carrying expenses. There would also be an increased risk of date-related expirations, damages, loss; and possible increases in taxes on value of inventory. 5 - 7. See Excel Spreadsheet attachment. 8. The advantages and disadvantages of EOQ are contingent upon the available accuracy of costs related to inventory and shipping, and the product being provided. The calculations of EOQ may not always reflect fluctuations in pricing by quantity or the shelf life of product. These factors could heavily throw off this basic method. In cases where storage spaces is nearly non-existent, instead of EOQ, an order system based on sales would be more reliable. For the average company, with storage space, non-perishable...

Analysis Of Alzheimer's Disease

...Individuals that live in a nursing home setting are usually more tired, have to use the bathroom more, seem to be in a lot more physical pain, and need a lot more attention and assistance. My grandmother, on the other hand, has a little bit of energy, doesn't think that anyone needs to help her with things such as cleaning, laundry, meals, etc., has become more of a moody individual, and she needs to feel like she is still useful and in control. She hates that she has me there as a caregiver because she thinks she can manage her day-to-day routine by herself, but simply cannot. She does not take care of herself like she used to. She forgets to shower, cook meals for herself, clean her house, and much more. That is why I stepped in because she needed help doing all of those things. She asks the same questions over and over again and forgets why I am there. She gets pretty moody with me, which is not her at all. She was always the Grandma that cooked us grandkids meals when we walked through the door. I would say that my Grandmother is in the middle stage of Alzheimer's disease because her cognitive and functional abilities have declined over the last year or so. She sometimes needs help showering and using the bathroom. She also needs help with remembering names and if they are in our family. As you can see, individuals that live in a nursing home are a little different from people that...

Reducing Airline Fuel Consumption and Cost

...savings of $650,000 per year (Dastin, 2014). While there is a large upfront capital cost for the purchase of thousands of tablets, this is offset by no longer having to print millions of sheets of paper each year for manuals. As for in-flight magazines, Singapore Airlines has been experimenting with providing digitized content for its three magazines on long-haul flights. For every 25lb reduction in paper, a savings of $400,000 in fuel cost can be realized. A single long-haul aircraft carries up to 880lb of paper. That amounts to over $14 million dollars in fuel costs per year, just to carry paper (Kolesnikov-Jessop, 2011). Market Mix

...These categories are called the four P’s or product, price, place, and promotion. The goal of the four P’s will hopefully be the aim of attracting and retaining the customers or target market that a company has identified. All four P’s of the marketing mix are essential and are interrelated (Perreault and McCarthy, 2005). In order for a company to successfully implement a marketing mix, a careful and well researched market plan needs to be generated. The market plan should include a SWOT analysis. The SWOT analysis is an evaluation of a company’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats.
