Recently in the news, the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) fined Johnny Sauter, one of their drivers, $10,000 as well as charging him 25 points for “inappropriate” comments made after a BUSCH race in Las Vegas. The words said were at the conclusion of a race in which the driver had been putting his life on the line at over 200 mph. Fueled with adrenaline, the words spoken were not words ordinarily used by Sauter, however, NASCAR legislated just the same (McCormick). This case is the most recent of many that censorship has become a major battleground. Since first the shootings of April 1999 in Columbine Colorado, and most recently, the 2004 Super Bowl Halftime show in which singer Justin Timberlake exposed the breast of fellow singer Janet Jackson, the government has made it its priority to influence the entertainment industry to put into place new rules, such as the one in NASCAR, to regulate “inappropriate” material, therefore increasing censorship. On top of this, the industry itself has begun to attempt a type of self-censorship. Although censorship has been around for ages, what is it and why does it exist? Censorship in today’s era is a higher power attempting to prevent disturbing or painful sights, sounds, or any other information form from reaching the public in order to keep a feeling of well moral being. However, the main question in today’s times is whether or not censorship is necessary in today’s world, and if the government should be able to force censorship on the entertainment industry. Though the case involving the NASCAR driver is the most recent ridiculous form of censorship, it has taken place throughout the history of entertainment itself. However, in the past ten years, after censorship laws had begun to loosen, the media and the government has once again begun to pull tighter on the censorship blindfold, covering society’s eyes. After the shootings in Colorado, many wrongfully took up arms against the entertainment industry, convincing society that the blame for the teen’s actions should fall on the violence they viewed in movies and on TV. Therefore, following the shootings, the House of Representatives held a hearing to help determine any new bills that should be put into place to restrict the entertainment industry. As written by Virginia Postrel in an article for Reason magazine, “The agenda was to make popular art into the equivalent of cigarettes: a demon drug sold by greedy liars to corrupt our youth. ‘Joe Camel has, sadly, not gone away,’ said Sen. Joseph Lieberman (R-Conn.), the committee’s most eager attacker. ‘He’s gone into the entertainment business’” (Postrel).
After the hearings, the House put down two bills that would have restricted the rights of the entertainment industry. However, the Clinton administration had a different view of the matter. As the magazine article reads, “It acted unilaterally to appease the soccer-mom gods.” The Clinton administration then ordered the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to investigate whether or not violent movies and video games effect American youth. By putting these investigations into effect, the Clinton administration influenced victims to attack the entertainment industry with suits in hopes that their response would be the censorship of their own material. (Postrel)
Now, since the controversial halftime show during Super Bowl XXXVII, the entertainment industry has reopened its eyes towards its material, this time looking more toward its sexual content. After the incident, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) was sent in to investigate to find out whether or not the broadcast violated federal indecency laws. However, unlike the case involving Columbine, the majority of the American population was not behind this investigation. As shown by an online poll done for the Associated Press by Ipsos-Public Affairs, published on CBSNEWS.com, nearly 80 percent of respondents said it was a waste of money to investigate, and only 18 percent felt that the actions during the halftime show were illegal. However, the fact that the investigation took place shows once again that the government has already and continues to tighten its censorship regulations as if all of a sudden it is the responsibility of the industry to instill a moral change in society.
There are many arguments to why censorship should be allowed. The first reason is that the mass media is the main source of the education of today’s society. Second, the affect of the media on society is apparently harmful. The third is the supposed dysfunctional society raised by modern media not being able to respect a “civilized republic.” The last is that the government and the government only has the ability to censor uncouth material (Lowenthal). Although these arguments may seem as if they have some ground, they do not. First of all it is no doubt that the mass media is the main education source for society. However, this education is not for all ages of society and it is a parent’s responsibility to enforce social norms as to what minors should or should not watch. Although some television may be viewed as destructive to young minds, not all television is destructive to all minds. By allowing government to censor the mass media not only is the First Amendment being impinged upon, but also, the government would be given unlimited control over what society watches. In doing this, the government is given power over the “main source of the education,” which would allow it the future ability to show any of its own propaganda, therefore giving the government the ability to brainwash America’s youth. There have been many nations in the past that have used government censorship in order to shield the eyes of its population. One of these nations is one of the most infamous in the minds of the American public. From the mid to late 30’s to the end of World War II, Adolph Hitler and his Nazi party used the media in order to persuade its masses into one of history’s bloodiest wars. Although the media now is, in theory, unbiased, when one gives any government the ability to pass laws that will censor the mass media, it gives that government the ability to control the masses themselves. As shown prior to WWII, Hitler was able to blame struggles of the German economy and society on the Jewish population. One must not give any government this power of control. Many who do not wish for the government to have control to censor have come up with a new idea called self-censorship. This is the idea that the entertainment industry itself should be required to censor its own material. Although this may keep the government away from the ability to censor and not impinge on the First Amendment, one must see that this form of censorship is just as wrong. Although it is not unconstitutional for the entertainment industry to do so, by promoting self-censorship, artists, directors, and all other contributors to modern media are still being kept from expressing themselves. This is true because, although the government would not keep one from creating their own art, the industry which would be responsible for having one’s art viewed would simply not show it. Therefore it would be nearly impossible for the creator’s art to ever be seen. In an article for the Wall Street Journal promoting self-censorship, Michael Eisner wrote, “Citizens fighting like hockey players over sexual infidelities and worse; rock groups advocating violence against women and police – these are permissible under the First Amendment. But they are not desirable if we aspire to call ourselves civilized” (Eisner). While one may agree that these are uncivilized matters, one still must not censor the material. Rather, one must leave it up to the free individual what them, themselves, perceives as either right or wrong. While the news feels it is responsible to live up to the “community standard of taste,” the entertainment industry should not. The Industry must only be allowed to inform the public of material, it is the job of the parents or adults themselves to choose to view it or not. When one stops and looks at society today one can see that it is morally bankrupt. However, allowing the government to censor the media is not the answer, nor is it to allow the entertainment industry to censor its artists. Society today must find a way to own up to its own moral disgrace. By putting blame else ware, parents, as well as other authority figures, are not solving the problem, rather, they are throwing dry wood on a fire which is already beginning to burn out of control. Censorship is not, nor has it ever been an answer. It is simply another way to cover up this modern reality, and though at times it may be harsh, it is what is real that makes one into who he or she shall become. By allowing censorship, one is hurting both those who create media art and the audience for whom the art is meant. Therefore, as quoted from Postrel’s article “Creative Matrix,” “Curbing new ideas hurts not only individual creators but the audience for which they create and the posterity that inherits their legacy.”

Social Media And Internet Censorship

..."The free internet is used every day and is the most popular form of communication, marketing, and business. Apps and websites such as Instagram, Google, and online banking, are all controlled by the producers and or companies of each single application. Abusing these types of businesses can result in consequences, and abusing them in ways that break the law should concern the government and its power to monitor the sources. For example, posting inappropriate media or sending hostile comments are able to be dealt with within the Instagram company. In these scenarios, social media sites offer a “report” option, allowing users to report content they feel shouldn’t be on the site. In cases where media that breaks the law of harassment like posting a video of a minor using an illegal drug or a video of a robbery, can be taken over by the government and taken into further steps than just “report.” The government should have the power to take things involving the government into their hands, keeping the internet safe....

Essay On Censorship In America

...As Americans, we pride ourselves on having the ability to say what we want when we want to. This was a right given to us by the First Amendment of the Constitution. The act of censorship creates a barrier between media and freedom of speech. Due to the topic of censorship, many Americans have different opinions on if censorship is a violation of their rights as a citizen of the United States or if it is to preserve the wellbeing of the country. Before the internet became as powerful as it is today, the government reviewed every article, news report, and television show before being released for public viewing to prevent indecencies from occurring in the media. Consequently, as the media continues to flourish, it creates difficulties in the...

...Chinese Censorship is a Contradicting Problem In the contemporary society, with internet expansion the world is extending to be an Information Age. Due to the expansion, a large amount of sensitive information that governments disagree with is widely and rapidly spread. In order to control the dramatic increase of this sensitive information censorship occurs. According to a report, censorship is defined as “…one of the tools used by governments to filter out unwanted information and to prevent the spread through the World Wide Web”. (Antonio Lupetti) In many countries around the world, government censors restrict access to certain kinds of material for their citizens such as movies with sexual content, news with political ideas, and violent video games. Based on the latest data, censorship is a phenomenon of staggering proportions that affects over 25% of the global population. China, with a population of over 1.3 billion people and 360 million active users of the Internet is by far the nation in which the censors’ activity affects the highest number of citizens (China). It is well known among the Chinese that Facebook, Twitter and YouTube are all blocked in China because there is too much sensitive information on them. It is clear that since censorship has begun in China, it has hindered China from developing, updating information and limited the freedom of speech. Censorship has been used in China for centuries. Censorship

...Daniel Maddox Eng1000 We Need Censorship It won't kill us to make limits, but it might if we don't. That is why it is right to limit adult's freedom of expression. It is in our, societies, best interests to protect the children. Lional Tate is just one example of a child gone badly because of the media. Tate mimicked his idol the Rock, killing a six-year old girl by smashing her skull, pulverizing her liver, breaking her ribs and causing numerous cuts and bruises. If that's not enough of an example what about John McCollum from New Jersey who simply listened to Ozzy Osborne's "Suicide Solution" and killed himself? These are not random occurrences, we hear about them on the news frequently. If our freedom of expression is harming kids why can't we fix the problem by not allowing them access to it? We need censorship in the media because of influence, imitation, and the preservation of jobs. "Monkey see, Monkey do." Everyone has heard this phrase sometime in his or her life. This phrase is simple, yet very useful to today's debate, when a child sees someone or something doing something. They will of course follow suit and imitate the action being performed. Children do not know any better. Therefore they are innocent and deserve to be respected. It is for these following reasons that we argue for the censorship of harmful materials that could influence a child or children into violent acts, expressions, and other dangerous actions. Through television, video games, and movies...

Censorship

...Censorship Benefits Society Nowadays access to pornography is much easier than many years ago, and that makes pornography more harmful to society. But there are many questions and concerns about this issue that makes it even more controversial than many people think. Also, there are different views on this issue, but in my opinion censorship of pornography is very important to our society and to our children. Therefore some censorship and restrictions are necessary in pornography, and because of that the first amendment should have some limits on free speech in order to keep the society healthy, stop degrading women, and protect the future generations from overexposure to the pornography which may cause mental and emotional problems and behavioral effects in many children and adults in the United States. There are a lot of arguments that pornography harms public morality and in a very interesting way Michael Craven in his article “Pornography Should Be Censored” argues that everyone has different religious beliefs but those who are thinking more logically that the pornography harms and it could be recognized as something bad and evil. Therefore it is everyone’s responsibility to stop harming the society and reduce the harm that is caused by many men and women that don’t think about our society. In Cravens article it is clear that by censoring pornography, everybody will benefit, and something like pornography that many families sees as something bad and evil for their children...

Music Censorship: a Violation of Artistic Expression

...Music Censorship: A Violation of Artistic Expression Brandi Yaeger University of Phoenix What if you were told that you could no longer listen to your favorite song anymore because the message that it sends does not conform to someone else’s way of thinking? What reasons are given for the censoring of music, or why have musicians been tortured, jailed, exiled or even killed? Why have certain forms of music been silenced? Music is an expression of ideas and emotions that reflect hopes, dreams and aspirations not only for the artist creating the music but in the listener as well. Music has been used as a form of expression of thoughts and emotions for centuries. People in power sometimes view these expressions conflicting to their current way of thinking what is proper lyrical content or negating to current governing practices. The implementation of music censorship has been done by governments, religions, educational systems and even families. In most cases this censorship is a violation of international conventions of human rights, (Freemuse.org). George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950), said “All censorships exist to prevent anyone from challenging current conceptions and existing institutions. All Progress is initiated by challenging current conceptions, and executed by supplanting existing institutions. Consequently the first condition of progress is the removal of censorships.” (Freemuse.org). Although music censorship is imposed for various reasons, music is a form...

...Question 1 Censorship is a growing issue in Malaysia as it attempts to adapt to a modern knowledge based economy. Malaysia has one of the world’s strictest forms of media censorship with nearly a hundred movies banned in this decade alone on the pretext of upholding morality. Discuss if you agree with this statement. The Film Censorship Board of Malaysia is a Malaysian government ministry that vets films. It is under the control of the Home Ministry. Malaysia has the toughest censorship laws in the world, with television and film strictly evaluated by the Board. The Board was established under Section 3 of Film Censorship Act 1952, and its role was revised in 2002 under an updated version of the Act. Board must certify any film that will be screened in Malaysia. Under the provisions of the Act, no one is allowed to view any film that has not been licensed by the Board. The Board watches the uncensored film and decides whether its content is acceptable for a Malaysian audience. It’s an effort to protect family values among Malaysian citizens. When speaking about media, films are not the only one in the category, advertisements and televisions as well as broadcasting are in the context. An advertisement has been defined in Section 2 of the Trade Description Act 1972. There is also a Code of Advertising for Radio and Television. The latest television Advertisement Code has been in force since October 1990. Moving on to broadcasting, this section is ruled under the Broadcasting...

Rushdie and Rauch V. Storck: Censorship

... Rushdie & Rauch v. Storck: Censorship! Salman Rushdie is one of the many opponents of censorship. Born to an Indian family in Britian, his books contain magical realism, historical fiction, and Eastern-Western connections. His works are often controversial, and in 1989 Ayatollah Khomeini issued a fatwa calling for his death. Rushdie tells us that we are living in a censorious age where our voices are being censored in the name of “respect”. This need for “respect” extends beyond its traditional definition, and also means that one must not overtly disagree with what others say or think. Rushdie thinks this censorship will bring an end to the radical disagreements that shape a free society. ! ! Jonathan Rauch is an American journalist who is also an avid proponent of same-sex marriage. He agrees with Rushdie that censorship should be fought because it is being used to censor simple disagreements; not only people are losing face over voicing negative views about blacks, but also for speaking against advantaged groups such as Christians and men. Rauch argues that censorship’s goal of purifying the world is a futile effort. People typically see the world in terms of in-groups and out-groups, so there will always be prejudice. This prejudice is hard to pin down because it may be confused with misinformation. For example, a protestor saying “God Hates Fags” may be expressing a subjective statement of fact. Therefore, the end goal of censorship is unobtainable. Rauch calls this...

Freedom of Speech

...Censorship Seri Kamal English 204 Professor Hanan Shanaah April 10, 2011 Censorship When I used to watch cartoons aired on the television, I noticed that sometimes the scenes of the episode aired are repeated, yet the translation is not, making the cartoon look lame since it doesn’t contribute to the story. I asked my big brother about the reason behind that and he said that some scenes may contain some violence, blood, or exposed body parts that the channel, like Spacetoon, wouldn’t want the children to see, so they censor it. Moreover, censorship is not only used in cartoon, it is used also in movies and series to delete sexual content or foul language. In addition, there are many types of censorship, and the types imposed are different from one country to another. Some countries may impose moral censorship; others impose military, political, or religious censorships. Many people would agree on some of the types of censorships enforced in the countries; however, people have the right of freedom of speech and the knowledge behind political issues, so these should not be censored by the country. Censorship is a problem that is known from before World War 1 and it is still a controversial issue with many people who are with the act and laws set regarding censorship and many who are against. Censorship is the restraint over any type of communication like speech regarding many different matters. For example, being against rules set or some political moves that a country...

...that question. You will always hear a variety of answers. An issue such as pornography to children seems to be one of the biggest topics. Inappropriate things are found on the Internet each day. Some people argue that censoring the Internet is unconstitutional. The Internet is the best source for people to express opinions and facts. Its said that “Freedom of speech” or “Freedom of press” is guaranteed by the First Amendment. For that reason, some people argue that censorship of the Internet is illegal. Censoring the Internet would be an uphill battle for the government to do. The government would have to invest time and man power to make it happen. Another issue would be, the government would have to get all other countries to support the idea. Information that you do not want your child to see should be a parent’s responsibility. However, with technology today that is almost impossible. There are other sources of media related things. There is the T.V., magazines and movies. All these forms of media can give unfavorable examples towards people, places, and things. Such as the use of drugs, guns and murder. For example, if a child’s favorite video game is “Grand Theft Auto” where shooting guns, car jacking people, going on missions to kill people is advertised, this may scar your child. You do not want your child to grow up thinking these things are okay to do. It is the parents’ responsibility to keep their children as pure as...
