Mercury, also known as Hermes in Greek culture, was the son of Jupiter and Maia. Mercury was the Roman god of of trade, thieves, travelers, sports, athletes, border crossings, guide to the Underworld, and messenger of the other gods. Mercury was said to be born in a cave on Mount Cyllene in Arcadia. Where Zeus impregnated Maia, one of seven daughters of the titan Atlas and the sea-nymph Pleione, at the dead of night while all other gods slept. When dawn broke Mercury was born and Maia wrapped him in swaddling bands and she soon fell fast asleep.
