The American Dream is the ability to access basic human freedoms like justice and free speech. I wouldn’t go as far as saying meritocracy exists as I see in reality that is not the way it works. For the most part, I think the stereotypical definition of the American Dream is an idea people cling to like the last ember on the fire after you have run out of wood to heat the house in the winter. You need it to go on. It helps validate that those crappy jobs you worked for 15 years meant something other than getting screamed at by your boss. It helps us believe that we can have material possessions and higher social status than those before us. I define it as the ability to access basic human freedoms.

...we develop a theoretical framework that explains how social class distinctions are sustained within organizations. In particular, we intro- duce the concept of “class work” and explicate the cognitions and practices that members of different classes engage in when they come in contact with each other in cross-class encounters. We also elucidate how class work perpetuates inequality, as well as the consequences of class work on organizations and those at the lower end of the organizational hierarchy. By examining microlevel interactions and how they become institutionalized within organizations as prevailing rules and practices, we contribute to both institutional theory and the sociology of social class differences. We encourage future research on social class and discuss some of the challenges inher- ent in conducting it. Several contemporary developments—includ- ing the financial crisis of 2008 (Rajan, 2010), the shrinking of the middle class (Leicht & Fitzger- ald, 2007), and the rise of the “new poor” in America (Cohen, 2010)— have reinjected the is- sue of social class differences and inequality (Stiglitz, 2012) into contemporary discourse. After years of oppression, it seemed folly to judge blacks by the same measures as whites. “You do not take a person who, for years, has been hobbled by chains and liberate him, bring him up to the starting line of a race,” President Lyndon B. Johnson said in a 1965 speech that laid the groundwork for affirmative action, “and then say, ‘You are free to compete with all the others,’ and still justly believe that you have been completely fair.” Given this history, it was striking to watch the 80 minutes of Supreme Court oral arguments about affirmative action on Wednesday. With the courtroom overflowing, filled with people who have spent their careers fighting for or against affirmative action, only one side talked about fairness.
