Metabolic rate is said to be determined by body size and often the temperature of the organism. Often there is one generic slope that scientists associate with the slope in oxygen consumption and metabolic rate, but their has been speculation on whether that number changes with body size and what type of organism it is. The resting metabolic scaling exponent for mammals and many other species is usually .75. Over the years many different studies have been done finding different scaling exponents. Although almost every scaling exponent for resting metabolic rate found if from .6-.8. The scaling exponent of .75 has ben shown in homeotherms by the physiological flow rates varying with body mass (F.P. Zanotto, 2004). Significant heterogeneity …show more content…
In this experiment we only measured the temperature of the water around the organism and not its body temperature. The temperature of the organism is what helps with metabolism because of the ability of the temperature to effect biological reactions occurring in the organism’s body (Gillooly et al. 2001). Many studies that involve the use of endotherms hardly included body temperature due to not finding a correlation between metabolic rate and temperature. In recent years though studies have begun to see a correlation between metabolic rate and body temperature of the mammals (Clarke et al. 2010). Mammals are endotherms so they can regulate their body temperatures over a small range which is why scientists never thought it would be a factor. Recently it has bee seen that the change can be greater than just 10 degrees Celsius suggesting that body temperature might be a significant variable when determining metabolic rate and body mass (Clarke and Rothery, 2008).
