Your present salary is $30,000, and you expect that it will grow by 4 percent per annum throughout your career (consequently, your investment at time 1 will be $3,000, your investment at time 2 will be $3,120, etc.). You will retire 40 years from today. a) How much money will you have in your investment account at retirement (assume you make your last investment deposit 40 years from now on the day you retire)? b) At retirement, you shift your investment portfolio balance into a money market account earning 6% per year, compounded monthly. You would like to make an equal monthly withdrawal from this money market account over the next 20 years (first withdrawal beginning one month into retirement at time 40 + one month). What equal, monthly amount can you withdraw from the account so that at time 60 (20 years into retirement) your money market account balance is reduced to $0?

Case Study - Methanex

...Introduction Methanex market leader position could enable it to absorb minor fluctuation in demand and supply through its global supply chain in an effort to remove volatility and set more consistent long-term supply prices for its consumers seeing a 49% growth increase from 1997 to 2013. Global recession caused Methanex prices to decline in 2009; however, recovery was seen in 2010 showing moderate growth. Global demand for Methanol had total revenue of $1,967 million in 2010, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.7% from 1997 to 2010 and an expectant CAGR of 7.3% between 2011 and 2015. Methanex Case Study (Ivey Case)

...Methanex: Developing Strategy in a Commodity Industry | 1. INTRODUCTION Methanex is the world's largest methanol producer. Before the economic crisis that had occurred in 2008, the company was very successful. It has been successful because of its leadership, which cut operating costs to a minimum, along with its reliable delivery. It also has a multi-million-dollar facility in remote, natural gas rich regions in the world and has its own distribution and logistics system. 2. PROBLEMS AND ITS SOURCES Methanex is facing lower profit margins and having concerns of remaining sustainable in the market due the rising price of natural gas and political instability where its factories are located. The global recession has made regions with Methanex factories, such as Egypt and Chile, extremely unstable. Unlike Methanex's competitors, the company is not well diversified. Methanex is highly reliant on the stability of consumption in the global market for methanol. Although the company's leadership is very strong that has contributed to its success, political and economic instability have resulted in inconsistent gas supplies, thus crippling Methanex's production of methanol. The main source of the problem has been the impact of the global recession. Predominantly, the global recession threatened production facilities in Egypt and Chile. There have been a series of revolutions in Egypt and the surrounding nations, which has resulted in social unrest and political instability....

A cautious but growing consensus among economists and industry analysts suggests that after more than two years of turbulence, the global economy in general and the chemical industry, in particular, are entering calmer waters.1 While a full recovery for chemical companies is not expected this year, certainly, the earnings releases across the industry for the first half of 2010 suggest that growth is returning at a faster rate than many had expected.2 Increased production in the domestic auto industry is supporting new demand for US chemical products, but the construction sector – another major market for US chemicals – is recovering more slowly. However, after massive layoffs, improvements in cash management and operational belttightening, the US chemical industry is expected to realize a year-over-year increase of around 7 percent in 2010, according to the American Chemistry Council (ACC).3 At the same time, this recovery presents its own set of challenges...

Next Shoring

...J A N U A R Y 2 014 Next-shoring: A CEO’s guide Katy George, Sree Ramaswamy, and Lou Rassey Proximity to demand and innovative supply ecosystems will trump labor costs as technology transforms operations in the years ahead. The problem Demand for manufactured goods in emerging markets is surging and fragmenting as factor costs shift; technological advances, such as more powerful robotics and the Internet of Things, are creating a range of new opportunities for manufacturers to digitize operations. Why it matters Manufacturing strategies built on labor-cost arbitrage are becoming outmoded; the race is on to get ahead of what comes next. What to do about it Place greater emphasis on proximity to both demand and innovation while: • Making location decisions that balance economies of scale against the growing diversity of tastes within and across global markets Building supplier ecosystems that combine technical expertise with local domain and market knowledge Developing the people and skills needed to make the most of technological advances across the organization • • © Bruno Ehrs/Corbis 2 When offshoring entered the popular lexicon, in the 1990s, it became shorthand for efforts to arbitrage labor costs by using lowerwage workers in developing nations. But savvy manufacturing leaders saw it as more: a decisive change in globalization, made possible by a wave of liberalization in countries such as China and India, a steady improvement in the capabilities...
