During the 20th century the Mexican culture has changed rapidly. The contemporary life in the biggest cities has, in many ways, become similar to United States and Europe. However, most Mexican villagers follow the older way of life more than the city people do. There are a few etiquettes that are valid around Mexico when it comes to social relationship, greeting, dining, attire, opposite sex, shopping, and bargaining.
In Mexico, the greeting and meeting formalities are very important, it is considered rude to fail to follow social protocols. It is essential to use physical contact to build trust and respect with others. Mexicans often hold a gesture (hug or handshake) longer than Americans and Canadians do. In social situations man shake hands until they know someone well, then they progress to more traditional back slapping and hugs. When women greet each other in social situations they usually do not shake hands, instead pat each other on the right forearm or shoulder. Men bow when greeting a woman in Mexico, and shake hands only if she extends her hand first. But, in business situations women usually offer a handshake. Mexicans are all about physical contact, it is essential.
Dining etiquette in Mexico is important to follow if ever dining at a restaurant or in a Mexican home. When dining at Mexican´s home its necessary to remember to always show up 30 minutes or later in most places. Because arriving on time or earlier than planned is considered inappropriate. If you are invited to somebody’s home you should bring a bottle of wine or a flower. Bring white flowers, never a red one. At large parties you can introduce yourself, but at smaller gatherings the host handles the introductions. Remember to keep in mind manners when sitting at the table. Do not sit down unless you are invited to and told where to sit. Do not start to eat until the hostess starts. Your hands should be visible at all times when eating and keep your wrists resting on the edge of the table. Only men give toasts, and it is polite to leave some food on your plate after eating the meal. When you are finished, place your fork and knife across your plate with the prongs facing down and the handles facing to the right.
When you eat out in Mexico you should allow your host to order for you. Excess drinking is frowned upon in Mexico, especially when it is undertaken by woman. Always regulate alcohol intake in these social occasions. Good conversation topics at a meal should include family, museums, art and architecture, cuisine, Mexican culture, and travel experience. It is recommended not to bring up the topics of politics, war, immigration, and drugs. Always offer to pay the bill if you invited the other person. If somebody else invites you out to eat, you should also offer to pay, and then accept the declines of you offer. Mexico has a strong tipping culture; you must include a tip if you are settling the bill. Lunch is the main meal of the day and you should always plan to spend at least two hours enjoying the meal.
An important aspect of Mexican social culture is how to dress. People will usually treat you as they see you, so in social situations and business it is important to dress appropriately. For informal occasions men and women should wear casual attire depending on the situation. For formal occasions men should always wear suit and a tie and women should wear a formal dress. Recommended colors are navy and dark grey, and women should always wear makeup. At the coastal side of Mexico in cities like Cancun, Los Cabos and Acapulco, formal meeting do not require shirt and tie, casual or light clothing is used instead due to the heat and relaxed nature of these locations.
How Mexicans look at or treat the opposite sex is somehow different from US and a big part of Europe. Mexican males generally believe that nothing must be allowed to tarnish their image as a male. Making remarks on women is a stereotypical sign of masculinity and not be seen as harassment. Women in Mexico appreciate and expect gentlemanly behavior, similar to the US. They liked doors to be opened for them by men, and also like being helped to their seat at the table.
Bargaining is the way of life between customers and street merchants throughout Mexico, because Mexico is the land of the markets. The markets are usually outdoors and are set up underneath tarps, on alleyways, or green spaces. There are specialty markets that sell organic products and flowers, and then there are souvenir markets that sell gifts. Bargaining in Mexico is the essential business and has been for centuries. It is important to know how, when, and where to engage in negotiations. Bargaining is a game of skill with etiquette and rules. When the game of bargaining is correctly played, it is good to provide the vendor with a bit of social relief and the buyer with good price. When bargaining is incorrectly approached the negotiations can get offensive. Always be sure that you can walk away if you bargaining effort fails and never back down from buying if the seller accepts your price.

International Etiquette of Mexico

...History and Facts of Mexico Mexico is the third largest country in Latin America and now has the largest population of Spanish speakers in the world. Keep in mind, however, that Spanish was not always the primary language of the native people. Before the Spanish influence, many different native tribes inhabited the country; each of them speaking their own dialect. Some of the more popular dialects were the Mayan dialect and the Náhuatl dialect. The northern tribes, known to be the Chichimecs, were hunters and gatherers. They were small, more isolated groups who roamed the dryer lands of the deserts and steppes. The agricultural tribes inhabited other regions of the country and allowed larger populations in their surroundings. Included in these agricultural tribes were the Mayans of the Yucatan, Totonac, Huastec, Zapotecs, Tlaxcalans, Aztecs, and others tribes. These tribes developed civilizations with highly structured temples used for religion, sacrifices, commerce, and their form of government. The Aztecs even used a sort of tribute system to collect taxes and treasures from conquered tribes. The well known symbol of the Aztecs was an eagle with a snake in its beak resting on a cactus. This Aztec symbol has become the national symbol of Mexico. In 1519, the Spanish explorer Hernán Cortés, sailed along the eastern gulf coast and anchored off the island of San Juan de Ulúa. Over 500 Spanish soldiers stepped foot on the land, bringing with them a new animal species...

Managing Cultural Diversity

...26 Over the years, the workforce has grown to have diverse groups of people working together. Diversity is defined as the differences or dissimilarities among people. These differences can be age, gender, race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, education, experience, and any characteristic used to distinguish between people. (Jones, 2011) To understand the present, a look at the history of diversity in the workplace will be discussed. I will research and discuss the cultural diversity and how managers today have evolved over the years to learn how to handle it. I will discuss certain steps that managers can take to effectively manage the diversity in their workplace. I will look into the business etiquette and protocol of countries like the United States, Mexico, and Japan. I will also look into where these countries fall on Hofstede’s model of national culture. I will also discuss why it’s important for mangers to learn about a culture they are not familiar with when doing business to make sure they don’t offend the other person or company.     History of Diversity in the Workplace The workforce slowly changed after World War II as a growing number of minority groups began to speak up and demand fairness among the workers. (Wagner, 1999). In the 18th century up to about 1930, the modern workplace was a “man’s world.” Women that were employed typically occupied the positions of clerk, typists, secretaries or other office positions. Minorities that were in the workplace...

Mexico Culture

...Mexico: Cultural Analysis This paper is a cultural analysis of the Mexican culture through the lens of the 5-D Model developed by Professor Geert Hofstede. The five dimensions of the model include: Power Distance (PDI), Individualism versus Collectivism (IDV), Masculinity versus Femininity (MAS), Uncertainty Avoidance (UAI), and Long term versus short term orientation. In recent years a sixth dimension named Indulgence versus Restraint has been added. There are no rankings for this dimension as it has only been recently added and researched (Hofstede, 2012). This Model gives one an important tool for gaining insights into given cultures which can improve business opportunities and interactions (International business etiquette, manners and culture, 2012). Power Distance Index (PDI) is the degree to which the less powerful members of a society accept and expect that power is distributed unequally. The issue is how a society handles inequalities. Mexico, ranking 81on the PDI, is a hierarchical society. Regionally, Mexico ranks higher on PDI than the United States (rank 39) and Canada (rank 40), whose ranks indicate that their cultures strive to equalize the distribution of power and demand justification for inequalities of power. Globally, however, countries vary greatly in PDI, (average PDI rank of 60; Clearly Cultural, 2012). One must consider the PDI rank when doing business with a given country in a certain region. For example, Mexican businesses hoping to successfully...

...US, conflict is dealt with directly and openly, and for this reason, Americans will not hesitate to say "no" or criticize others in public. This direct style of speech is often interpreted by foreign visitors as rude and may cause embarrassment to business people who are unaccustomed to such explicit communication. However, it is important to remember that in a business context it bears no relation to personal feelings and should not be taken as such. Egalitarianism - An important element of American culture is the concept of equality. Despite the many differences within American society, there is a collective understanding of the notion of equality that underlines many social relationships in the US. Americans believe in having equal rights, equal social obligations, and equal opportunities based on the concept of individual merit. Doing Business Gringo Style

...Ted’s Way May Not Be The Right Way Natalie J. Kopp Texas Wesleyan University BUA-3345-01 Professor Randy Lockhart November 1st, 2013 Ted Dorman is a family man with his head and heart in the right place; he is given an opportunity for professional growth as plant manager in a joint venture in Mexico facilitating the opening of SterMexicana. His counterpart, Manuel Angel Menendez Mata, a native Mexican, helps Ted settle in to this new workplace and town. The warm welcome is rather short lived due to social and cultural differences between Ted and Manuel. This case study demonstrates a lack of proper communication, sensitivity, and cultural understanding. Ted is a business-minded individual raised in a no nonsense, get to the point mentality which is prevalent among most Americans. The economic culture Ted has been immersed in is quite different in Mexico and he is oblivious to the need to adapt to his surroundings. While ignorance is not an excuse, it is a flaw that can serve as a learning tool to improve and correct behavior or mentalities that are not suitable in other parts of the world. As a result of these conflicts, a strained relationship develops between the two managers yet impacts more than just these two men. A ripple effect occurs causing stress in business relations with prospective clients, affects daily operations at the plant among workers, and ultimately stretches to affect the lives of wives and families. Countries across the globe accuse Americans...

Mexico has reduced sharply its government and external debt. The government has helped the economy by imposing monetary and fiscal policy discipline to promote stability and growth in per-capita income. According to Grant Thornton (2011), the Mexican economy has unprecedented stability for the last eight years. Inflation and the peso have been stable. The country has 12 free trade agreements with 43 countries and exports have surged. Mexico also benefits from qualified labor, together with powerful manufacturing and assembly industries. Modern Times Film Essay

...Module 5: Customs Etiquette and Protocol In an era of globalization, understanding the basics of etiquette and protocol — that is, the type of behavior that others expect of you in both informal and formal settings — is an important skill. It can instill an individual with confidence to handle almost any situation in any culture and allow a businessperson to concentrate on the deal at hand rather than worrying about such peripheral distractions as which fork to use or which hand to use for passing food. Without an understanding of the basics of etiquette and protocol, you risk coming off as a boorish Neanderthal. You may even put your company's image at risk or risk potential failure in the formation of key business relationships that are vital to global success. Finally, a well-honed sense and appreciation of local customs, etiquette and protocol can make you stand out as a world-savvy individual in a competitive global market. The world may indeed be an oyster today for many businesses. The problem is that too many businesspeople are still, like Oscar Wilde, using the wrong fork. The Ancient Art of Protocol Etiquette — the codes and practices prescribed by social convention that govern correct behavior — and protocol — the form of etiquette and ceremony observed by diplomats and businesspeople during formal interaction — are really ancient arts. Brazil: an Intercultural Communication Guide

...the major differences is that Brazil is a collectivistic culture as measured on Hofstede’s Individualism Index, in contrast to Canada’s individualistic culture (Hofstede, 2014). Brazil’s collectivist nature will have many impacts on your daily interactions, including the Brazilian importance of family, which will often be place above work priorities (Training, 2012). Brazil is also different in its communication style, which tends to be more informal and indirect than Canada’s formal and direct style. Brazil is also considered a high-context culture, therefore it is important to pay attention to what is said, how it is said, and what is not said (Suderman, 2008). Another major aspect of Brazilian culture is the importance of building relationships before commencing business. Brazilians expect to get to know their business contacts through multiple meetings, in order to establish trust, and hopefully a friendship (DiPaolo, 2006). This process may take some time as it illustrates Brazil’s Polychronic orientation, which is more relaxed (slower) in nature and where the prevailing attitude is that “things will get done in their own time” (Suderman, 2008). Brazil is also very comfortable with inequality as evidenced by their high score on Hofstede’s Power Distance Index (Hofstede, 2014). As a manager in Brazil you will be expected to take absolute responsibility and to use an authoritarian style of leadership (Training, 2012). There are also non-verbal communication cues that you...

An Evaluative Study of Cross-Cultutal Communication

...Today’s world has gone global. This globalization has led to the collaboration among manufacturers of products, suppliers of materials and service providers situated across the globe. The markets are no more restricted to a specific region or a country. The boundaries and distances between the markets have vanished. Saturation in developed markets has led to exploration and exploitation of emerging markets. The expansion of geographic footprint is not happening only to meet business needs, but this is happening also to promote social causes (Education, Health Awareness) and to mitigate global risks (Global Warming). Therefore, for the purpose of effective functioning, there is a strong need to learn about Cross-Cultural Communication. It is true that any usage of an inappropriate word, an impression or a gesture can lead to serious business or social implications. These cross-cultural communication blunders can then lead to lost customers, failed relationships and lost opportunities. To become an effective communicator worldwide, one should anticipate and identify cultural differences, draw clues and cues from non-verbal communication styles and be respectful to other cultures. To learn other’s cultures, one can extract information from experiences of friends, relatives and professional...
