While national news media continue to focus on race in Ferguson, Missouri, where a white police officer shot and killed an unarmed black teenager, they apparently don’t think a similar case in Utah with the races reversed is that newsworthy.

According to several media outlets the shooting death of Michael brown on August 9, 2014 in Fergusson, Missouri. Mike Brown an unarmed black teenage male was shot and killed by a white Police Officer Darren Wilson causing a uproar of riots, protest and discussion of police brutality and racism in United States. This incident gained national attention on social media, it was broadcast on television and newspaper worldwide. The facts and the circumstances of Mike Brown shooting incident still under federal and local investigation yet it resulted in protests and civil disorder and it also attracted attention of civil rights leaders, Celebrities, athletes, and the president of the United States also made a comment regarding this incident.

According to the Washington times in salt Lake City, Utah Mr. Dillon Taylor 20 years old white male was exiting a 7-eleven with his brother and cousin when officers arrived into investigate of a person with a gun call in the area. Mr. Taylor whom was unarmed and wearing headphones at the time ignored officer’s command and he was shot by the officer who is African American. Mr. Taylor’s friends and family held protest outside of state and federal offices demanding justice.

Mr. Taylor incident occurred 2 days after the high profile case of Mike Brown in Ferguson but yet it didn’t receive half of the attention from the media Mike Brown case did. The case appears to be identical two unarmed young man gunned down by the police just two days apart with a few roles reversed some view this discrepancy in media coverage as double standard others reverse racism.

As similar as both case appear to be the public’s reacted differently.
In Ferguson after the candlelight vigil of Mike brown, people protested Mr. Brown’s death with streams of violence by smashing store front windows carrying away looted goods from the store, smashing car windows, standing on top of the police vehicle taunting police Officers, Molotov cocktails and other object was lobbed at the police causing the Officers to respond with tear gas, and smoke bomb. All those events were seen around the world on live television and social media outlets.

While in Salt Lake City protester line the side walk across from the state and Federal building for a peaceful demonstration demanding justice and demilitarize the police department, no store front was looted, no Molotov cocktail was lobbed at police. Capturing few local and national news outlets attention not as much as the Ferguson simply because the media outlets was not interested in story. A peaceful protest is not newsworthy the public does not want to see local family, and friends standing on the side walk holding sign, shouting and demanding justice all that is boring and not news worthy. A crowed lobbing Molotov cocktail at police officers who’s in full military like riot gear including gas masks and helmets with heave armored vehicle in our city streets responding with tear gas and smoke bomb make more interesting news and it will get more ratings.

The double standard in United States continue to be a struggle for many Americans when it comes to racism and its going to continue for days to come. Its bias and morally wrong in all aspect of humanity we all created equal but yet we all are not treated equal or have the same opportunities and platform in life. According to huffingtonpost in 2012 Chicago had 500 murders and nononegligent manslaughter, New York City had 419 homicides, and Detroit had 286 homicides. 77.0% of the victims in Chicago were African American, 13.8% was Hispanic, 9.2% white, and 1.0% Asian. 90% of the victims were male with and average age of 25 years old. No form of protest was done for the young innocent victims that was caught in the crossfire of those ruthless thug. Prompting the question is it ok for African American to murder African American? Or is Mike Brown and Dillon Taylor life more precious than the 500 victims in Chicago? How come the president, civil rights leaders, and the media are not bringing any attention to this ruthless act?

I don’t believe in such thing as “reverse racism”. It doesn’t matter what color, race, religion, gender, sex orientation, culture you are if you discriminated against it is racism. When we use the term “Reverse racism” to describe any situation it only shows that we still believe in black and white. We all human if a white individual gets discriminated against because he or she is white its racism not “reversed racism”

The median income for African American is $32,500 compared to the $53,400 for whites. The unemployment rate is 19% for African American and 6.7% for whites. In the city where 67% of the population is African American but its leadership structure, from city hall to the police is overwhelmingly white.
According to www.city-data.com violent crime rate in Ferguson is higher than the national average with 217.3 compared to the 214.0 national averages.

In 2000 the population demographics in Salt Lake City were 79.2% whites, 1.89% African American. With 47.2 African American living bellow poverty level compared to the 11.9% whites. www.city-data.com also reports violate crime in Salt Lake City is higher than the national average 326.0 compared to the 214.0 national average. Salt Lake City violent crime rate is higher than Ferguson.

Looking at the Ferguson and Salt Lake City demographics it shows that as a police officer you are more likely to encounter with African American. And if you look at Salt Lake City Officers are more likely to encounter whites than African American. Those demographics show that community played no role in the original incident only the aftermath

In conclusion some would say the police officer had every right to discharge his department issued firearm at victims/suspect, others argue that the police officer had no right discharging his department issued firearm at the unarmed teens. One caused uproar of violence capturing the worlds attention while the other went unnoticed but not because of race, its simply because of the aftermath of the situation had people around the world in front of their computer and television.

As parents we want to be buried by our children we don’t want to be burying our young teenage son or daughter its heartbreaking regardless of the cause of death. No matter how we fell about white people or black people we all humans. How can we not feel empathy for the parent’s loss and pain? Two young mans life was lost regardless of the encounter with the law no one deserves to die at such young age. Two parents lost a son; one chair is going to be empty at parents’ thanksgiving dinner table. Race played no part in this incident; one’s action is to blame for this unfortunate event. No Officer wants to take anyone’s life. Police Officers risk their life every single day run to danger when everyone else is running away from danger making public safety and going home safe to their family at the end of the shift as priority number ONE.
