A Plan To Save Mike Huckabee’s Candidacy
I. Analysis Ever since the idea of a democracy has been implemented in modern government, the political races have been filled with slimy tactics, harsh words, and lies solely for the purpose of defeating your competitor and winning a position in the local, state, or federal government. Federal elections though, are on a whole different level. Wealthy individuals donate millions to whichever candidate they would like to see in the oval office. These candidates walk on a metaphorical tight rope, with no safety net twenty-four hours a day, and seven days a week. From the day they announce they want to run for president, the public eye will be on them. The media will be listening to every word they utter, …show more content…
Mike Huckabee, an ex-southern Baptist preacher, host of his own FOX News show, Huckabee, and the former governor of Arkansas, first made headlines with the publication of his book God, Guns, Grits, and Gravy. The controversy arose over the super star couple of Jay-Z and Beyoncé, of all people. He wrote in his book, "My reaction: Why? Beyoncé is incredibly talented – gifted, in fact. She has an exceptional set of pipes and can actually sing. She is a terrific dancer – without the explicit moves best left for the privacy of her bedroom. Jay-Z is a very shrewd businessman, but I wonder: Does it occur to him that he is arguably crossing the line from husband to pimp by exploiting his wife as a sex object?" (Huckabee). First off, Huckabee makes the mistake of involving himself with pop culture instead of stating his position on actual problems in America. By doing this, …show more content…
He appeared on numerous shows including The Daily Show, and on CNN arguing about his stance on the touchy topic of gay marriage. Huckabee once again hurt himself by speaking out on this topic. He compares being gay to drinking alcohol or swearing as if it is a lifestyle (Huckabee). Huckabee goes on to say that since his faith does not support the gay lifestyle so why should a Christian business be forced to cater to a gay person. He compares it to a Jewish Deli owner being forced to sell bacon wrapped shrimp (Huckabee). The Daily Show host, John Stewart had a field day with this. Stewart publicly embarrassed Huckabee on The Daily Show, and pointed out Huckabee’s flawed statements. Stewart stressed how his comparisons did not even make

Huhthe Role of Celebrity Endorsements in Politics:

...Oprah, Obama, and the 2008 Democratic Primary Craig Garthwaite Department of Economics University of Maryland College Park, MD 20742 Vmail: 202-746-0990 Email: cgarthwaite@gmail.com Tim Moore Department of Economics University of Maryland College Park, MD 20742 Vmail: 301-442-1785 Email: moore@econ.umd.edu August 2008 Abstract Candidates in major political contests are commonly endorsed by other politicians, interest groups and celebrities. Prior to the 2008 Democratic Presidential Primary, Barack Obama was endorsed by Oprah Winfrey, a celebrity with a proven track record of influencing her fans’ commercial decisions. In this paper, we use geographic differences in subscriptions to O! – The Oprah Magazine and the sale of books Winfrey recommended as part of Oprah's Book Club to assess whether her endorsement affected the Primary outcomes. We find her endorsement had a positive effect on the votes Obama received, increased the overall voter participation rate, and increased the number of contributions received by Obama. No connection is found between the measures of Oprah's influence and Obama's success in previous elections, nor with underlying local political preferences. Our results suggest that Winfrey’s endorsement was responsible for approximately 1,000,000 additional votes for Obama.
