Question 1 (18 marks – 60 minutes)
Napoleon is a company with over 400 employees in Barrie, Ontario and it is one of North America's largest privately owned manufacturers of high quality wood and gas fireplaces, gourmet gas and charcoal grills.
Napoleon's commitment to producing quality products combined with honest, reliable service has provided a successful framework for continued rapid growth of the company since its beginnings as a small steel fabrication business in 1976.
Napoleon works with its customers to design and implement innovative features and holds numerous patents for advanced state-of-the-art gas fireplace barbecue grill technology such as Infra-red grilling. The company's website provides customers with product information, help in finding distributors, and assistance in assembling its products. The website also provides secured product ordering and account management features for dealers of its products.
Napoleon has integrated IT into both its long-term planning and its daily operations. This stems from the view of the executive team that IT is key to their business, both when providing services to customers and in internal functions. A)

Napoleon’s IT department has not previously done any IT strategic plan. The CIO would like to know more about what steps to follow to develop an IT strategic plan. Provide a definition for IT steering committee and explain the role it plays in the process of creating an IT strategic plan. Apply your answer to the case of Napoleon. (4 marks)

Army Aviation in Low Intensity Conflict

...ARMY AVIATION OPERATIONS IN LOW INTENSITY CONFLICT Introduction “Foot slogging” by infantrymen has been most important and fundamental to address an insurgency; however, there are limitations to their mobility. To increase their versatility, the Portuguese introduced two contrasting means, the helicopter and the horse. While there were other, more conventional solutions to the mobility problem, such as trucks, jeeps, and light armored cars, these vehicles required at least crude roads, had other terrain limitations, and were vulnerable to land mines. The advent of the helicopter and its application in counter-insurgency began with the British in Malaya on 1 April 1950, with the formation of the Far East Casualty Air Evacuation Flight at Seletar with strength of three Westland S-51 Dragonfly helicopters. During the Malayan Emergency the British used their helicopters primarily for casualty evacuation and later for airlifting troops. Question that looms ahead for the future, no matter what the outcome in Jammu and Kashmir, and North Eastern States, is how the army aviation succeeds against fierce insurgency in strategy and capabilities. The Taliban’s resurgence, tenacious resistance against NATO forces in Afghanistan, Al Qaeda’s ability to elude United States forces, and the trouble Israel has had in trying to subdue violence in tiny Southern Lebanon (Hezbollah) and tinier Gaza (Hamas) deepen concern that even world’s finest militaries have problems against any kind...

Rizal: Hidden Beneath the Surface

...Nikki Vanessa V. Novales July 20, 2012 # 2012-42443 PI 10 E2-6R Rizal: Hidden Beneath The Surface A Reaction Paper On “Bayaning 3rd World” “Who is Rizal?” If you ask this question to any Filipino, they will most likely say, “He is our national hero” Or “He’s the person stamped on our 1-peso coin”. But is that all he really is? The movie “Bayaning 3rd World” is about two film makers trying to make a movie about Rizal. They found out, however, that this would not be an easy task, for their subject is a very complicated man. Rather than focusing on a single issue about Rizal, they decided to make a detective story about Rizal being the country’s national hero. They tackled several issues but focused mainly on Rizal’s retraction and Josephine Bracken. The movie was meant to be educational, but unlike most documentaries, “Bayaning 3rd World” is definitely not boring. The documentary was presented in a comical way, so that viewers of all ages would be able to understand it and grasp its meaning. I was confused at first because I didn’t know what the “Retraction Controversy” was and the two film makers started having these long conversations about it without explaining it to the viewers. But when I found out what it was all about, following the flow of the story became easy. Another controversy that arose was about Josephine Bracken, on whether she and Rizal were married or not. It was implied that if they were indeed married, then Rizal retracted...

...Math 5616H Midterm 1 with solutions Spring 2013 March 8, 2013 Total 80 points 1. (15 points) Let f (x) and g(x) be real continuous functions on an interval [a, b], such that b b f 2 (x) dx = a a b g 2 (x) dx = 1. Prove that a f (x)g(x) dx ≥ −1, and that a b f (x)g(x) dx = −1 if and only if f ≡ −g on [a, b]. Answer: Since f and g are continuous, so is (f + g)2 , which is therefore integrable. We compute: b b b b b 0≤ a b [f (x)+g(x)]2 dx = a f (x)2 dx+2 a f (x)g(x) dx+ a g(x)2 dx = 1+2 a f (x)g(x) dx+1, so a f (x)g(x) dx ≥ −1. If it is = −1, then the first “≤” must be “=”, so the continuous function [f (x) + g(x)]2 ≡ 0, and f ≡ −g on [a, b]. 2. (25 points) Let α(x) be a strictly increasing function on the interval [0, 1], such that α(0) = 0 and α(1) = 1. Show that the Riemann-Stieltjes integral 1 α(x) dα(x), 0 exists if and only if α is continuous on [0, 1], and evaluate this integral if it is continuous. Answer: Consider any partition P of [0, 1] : P = {0 = x0 , . . . , 1 = xn }. Since α is increasing, Mi := supx∈[xi−1 ,xi ] α(x) = α(xi ) and mi = α(xi−1 ). Then n n U (P, α, α) − L(P, α, α) = i=1 (Mi − mi )∆αi = i=1 (∆αi )2 . Suppose α is continuous; then since [0, 1] is compact, α is uniformly continuous. Thus, for any given ε > 0 there is δ > 0 so that if |x − y| < δ then |α(x) − α(y)| < ε. Hence if P ∗ is a refinement of P which satisfies xi − xi−1 < δ for all i = 1, . . . , n, we have n U (P ∗ ...

...Question 1 # sold | P(x) | 0 | 0.1 | 1 | 0.11 | 2 | 0.2 | 3 | 0.23 | 4 | 0.3 | 5 | 0.06 | Question 2: The average rate of occurrence of accidents was 8.15 per week. A) during that time, what is the probability of getting less than 3 accidents a week? Use poisson for this question. Since it is less that 3 accidents, x = 0,1,2 (Px=o) = [(8.15^0) (e^8.15)] / 0! = 0.00288735. (Px=1) = [(8.15^1) (e^8.15)] / 1! = 0.002353193. (Px=2) = [(8.15^2) (e^8.15)] / 2! = 0.009589362. Add all these results together, and p(x<3) is 0.01223119. B) The probability if an accident on the road is 0.295. Out of 10 reportable accidents, what is the probability that 2 occurred on the road? Use Binomial for this. Since it is exactly 2, we need to find P(x=2). Use the binomial formula, n = 10, x = 2, p = 0.295, and q is 0.705. = 10!/2!(10-2)! * 0.205 ^2 * q^ 10-2. Answer is 0.23898436. Question 3: 15% of drivers have a probationary license and 85% have a regular license. In a given year, 10% of drivers with probationary licenses are involved in an accident. 2.5% of regular drivers are involved in an accident. For this question it is better to draw a tree diagram. Question 4: Mean values for income for men are 100K, for woman, 80K. SD deviations of 20K and 15K respectively. Variables are normally distributed and independent. Calculate the 95th percentile, for men income. 95th p = 0.95. In the zscore table, we find a value of 1.64. Us e the formula for z-score (population) : 1...
