Unit 5: Mitosis and Meiosis

SC.912.L.16.5 Explain the basic processes of transcription and translation, and how they result in the expression of genes.

Processes of Transcription and Translation
A. Genetic information from DNA in transcription is transcribed in RNA. Using the mRNA instruction translation makes body structures.

SC.912.L.16.14 Describe the cell cycle, including the process of mitosis. Explain the role of mitosis in the formation of new cells and its importance in maintaining chromosome numbers during asexual reproduction.

Cell Cycle and Mitosis
A. The cell cycle is the growth and division of cells. There are three main parts of the cell cycle: Interphase, mitosis, and cytokinesis.
1. In Interphase the cell begins to grow …show more content…
In mitosis the nuclear and nucleus divide in a four stage process prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase. In prophase, the spindle apparatus form between the poles as the nucleolus disappears. Next in metaphase, the chromosomes and spindle fibers attach and line up along the cell's equator. Then in anaphase, the chromosomes move to opposite poles due to the shortening of microtubules. Finally in telophase, the nuclear envelope re-forms and the nucleolus reappears.
3. Finally in cytokinesis, the cytoplasm of the cell splits and creates two new daughter cells, identical to the …show more content…
1.Gametes, sex cells containing half the number of chromosomes, are found in meiosis. There are two types of sex cells, one being sperm, the male sex cell, and the other being eggs, the female sex cells. Haploid cells are the singular number of chromosomes in gametes. and diploid cells are twice the number of haploid cells
2. Fertilization occurs when one haploid gamete combines with another resulting in a diploid cell for each gamete.
3.Meiosis happens in two cell division meiosis I and meiosis II
Crossing over is the exchange of genetic information in pairs of chromosomes
Independent assortment are separate genes that go about independently
At the end of meiosis II four cells are formed and each nucleus contains a haploid number of chromosomes

SC.912.L.16.17 Compare and contrast mitosis and meiosis and relate to the process of sexual and asexual reproduction and their consequences for genetic variation.

Meiosis & Mitosis
Contrasts of Meiosis and Mitosis
Meiosis has two sets of division as mitosis has one.
Mitosis only occurs in body cells as meiosis occurs only in reproductive cells
Meiosis results in genetic variation in cells as mitosis results in identical
