UNIT DESCRIPTION
Analytical techniques at this level attempts to supplement earlier study of the elements of statistical sampling and other mathematical techniques. While, this unit provides opportunities for students to deal with situations involving probability, descriptive and inferential statistics, regression analysis and other basic mathematical tools used by business analysts at their workplaces, it intends to further expand student’s ability and interest into the area of economic research. Though the unit may seem mathematical at first there are certain characteristics that distinguish it from any mathematics unit. The unit provides students with the necessary tools to interpret results rationally. Finally, it provides the basis for a unit in econometrics at the higher level. The student shall be able to: • • • • • • • • • • • Differentiate the two general bodies of methods that together constitute the subject called statistics: descriptive and inferential statistics Understand the usage of graphical descriptive methods to summarise and describe sets of data understand the usage of numerical descriptive measures to summarise and describe sets of data Manage the data collection and sampling process Understand the basic concepts behind the rules and techniques of probability Acquire knowledge on the characteristics of probability distributions including binomial and other discrete probability distributions. Understand the importance of normal distribution and its practical usage. Link numerical descriptive statistics and probability distributions to statistical inference Understand the relevance of estimating population parameters and how they are tested in decision making for single populations. Analyze the relationship between two variables with emphasis on regression. Understand the composition of a time series and simple forecasting.

The launch of the Model T and the development of the assembly line allowed Ford to make such assertion on the market because products were more price focused, and there were fewer competitors. Nowadays, with technology and customer (value-based) branding, buyers have numerous choices for every commerce or merchandise. Instead of the homogenous mass production, there is a movement towards differentiation through customization and market segmentation. Therefore, ZENN Motors Inc., and all other organizations must consider the four P’s of marketing (product, place, price, and promotion) when launching a new product or in company positioning. Market Segmentation Segmentation divides the consumers into well-defined portions, and then re-groups customers who share similar needs and wants; typically into geographic, demographic, psychographic, and behavioral sectors. The geographic segment divides consumers into topographical areas such as regions, countries, neighborhoods, and etcetera. A demographic market splits variables by “age, family size, family...

Emerging Market Mutual Fund Performance and the State of the Economy

...Emerging Market Mutual Fund Performance and the State of the Economy∗ Ayelen Banegas November 2010 Abstract Following the financial liberalization of many Asian, European, and Latin American countries emerging markets have become a central player in the global economy. As a result the universe of equity funds investing in these developing economies has been in continuous expansion. In this paper we propose a set of asset class specific predictive variables for emerging markets and exploit them in order to identify those funds that outperform the market in different phases of the economic cycle. We employ a comprehensive survivorship-bias free universe of global and regional emerging market funds and use a Bayesian framework that incorporates predictability in manager skills (stock selection and benchmark timing skills), fund risk loadings and benchmark returns by exploiting ex-ante business cycle related state variables. Our results provide empirical evidence of return predictability and the economic value of active management in emerging markets. ∗ I would like to thank Allan Timmermann for his guidance and support. I am also grateful to James Hamilton, Bruce N. Lehmann, Ross Valkanov and Debbie Watkins for their helpful comments. I also benefited from discussions with Ben Gillen. Finally, I want to thank Russ Wermers for providing me with the mutual fund dataset. 1 1 Introduction During the last decades the mutual fund industry has been continuously...
