English 11 Honors-AP: Paper #1

27 September 2010

Title is Required, and it is Centered: No Bold, No Underline

Indent your first paragraph and begin your essay. Note that everything (including the heading) is double-spaced. Be sure that both the last name and the page number appear in the running-header, and that the running-header is all 12-point font. Also note that the paper identifier will appear in the heading after the course number and a colon. The date should appear in this form: day, month, year—no commas. All margins are one inch. All works cited (including both primary and secondary sources) should appear at the end of the paper on its own page. It will be called the Works Cited page, and the words “Works Cited” will appear at the top of the page, centered, with no other formatting. Then you will list the bibliographic information of all works cited, alphabetically by author or first word in the entry. The Works Cited page is also double-spaced, within and between each bibliographic entry. Be sure that each entry is left justified on the first line, and subsequent lines are indented five spaces (one TAB). Follow standard MLA practice for bibliographic entries. When you directly quote, or even if you paraphrase, the language of a primary or secondary source, you cite that source parenthetically. The following sentence is an example of an MLA-style parenthetical reference: A consideration of the importance of self-reliance must understand that, “Because it is my name!” (Miller 143). Note that the PERIOD appears AFTER the parenthetical citation, which includes the author and the page number but no

Mla Formatting Reflection

...This semester I learned the correct way to write a research paper using MLA formatting. Professor Feltey taught the class how to find reliable sources and the importance of evaluating each source to ensure that we are not using overly biased information. I was surprised to discover that writing a research paper was much more involved than I had anticipated. After completing my research paper, I felt that I had reviewed my subject from both sides and was able to write a convincing argumentative research paper. I approached my research assignment with an open mind. I already had a strong opinion on the subject that I chose to research, overcrowded prisons, so I hoped my research would confirm what I already believed to be true. My research focused on the...

...results of your investigations on a selected topic. Based on your own thoughts and the facts and ideas you have gathered from a variety of sources, a research paper is a creation that is uniquely yours. The experience of gathering, interpreting, and documenting information, developing and organizing ideas and conclusions, and communicating them clearly will prove to be an important and satisfying part of your education. Revisions to this Guide were made in May 2004 to reflect recommendations in the MLA Handbook's sixth edition (2003) and on the MLA's own Web pages. There are many approaches to research — an essential part of every business and profession — and many ways to document findings. The library has books which will help you, and most English composition textbooks contain chapters on research techniques and style. It is important to follow consistently and accurately a recommended format that is clear and concise and that has been approved by your teacher. The formatting of citations recommended in this guide is based on Modern Language Association recommendations. If your instructor requires another format, you can ask that instructor how such a format will be different from the recommendations we have made and make the appropriate adjustments. (Pay special attention to the material on "Footnotes and Endnotes" appearing in the section called "Parenthetical Documentation.") This guide may suffice for most students' needs for most academic purposes in Humanities disciplines...

...kept a journal or a diary. Writing things down never made me feel better so my first real experience in any type of writing was in school. Before then I had not given writing much thought. I read a lot of books, magazines and papers; how hard could it be? It wasn’t long before I had a real eye opening experience trying to write my first real formal paper. Writing has never been easy for me so when I started writing formal papers in college it was one of the more difficult assignments for me. In the first part of this essay, I will review my first experience in writing a formal college paper, how the Professor encouraged me to actually finish the paper, then in the second part of my paper I will describe my experiences with research and MLA formatting style. I will never forget my first college English Composition class. When I walked into the class it looked like any other classroom. People were sitting in what I was sure was their comfort spots in the classroom, some in front, some in back. I, of course, chose a middle seat. I pulled out the books and papers I needed for the class and sat quietly. When the Professor started the class we all signed in and of course, we had to write an introduction of ourselves to him. That seemed easy enough. I wrote it out and handed it in and was passed back a syllabus. The final draft of our first paper wasn’t even due for four weeks. At that time I never imagined I would need that full four weeks for one paper. My first paper was to be on...

Regardless of the kind of presentation of you choose to do, your goal is to convince the class (and me) that the historical perspective you have provided has deepened our understanding and appreciation of the play as an artistic achievement. ...MG420 DL Labor Relations Research Assignment (Your name) (Date of submission) Instructor’s Name   1. Define the term “collective bargaining” and list and describe four issues that are mandatory components of a collective bargaining agreement. Tips for success: • Have a clear Introduction, Body, and Conclusion for each question. • If I ask you to define something, please do not give me something from a dictionary. Be more creative than that. • Make sure you follow the MLA formatting style. You should be familiar with this by now. Note: I prefer, so I required, the use of parenthetical citations (I hate to have to scroll to see your references) • Make sure your source is credible. For example, do not give me anything you saw at Wikipedia.org – Wikipedia is a free-for-all site. Anyone can publish there, but these sources are not credible. • Make sure you discuss the relevance and/or applicability (to the question) of the source material you are using (and citing) in support of your offering. Paraphrasing or summarizing is always a nice touch. Here's an example from a previous student's paper: "The May 2010 issue of EPSU (http://www.something.something) discusses the plight of French firefighters who took action to try to get the government to declare their jobs as dangerous and to agree to special retirement agreements. Have you heard of what firefighters do? Have you seen how firefighters rescue people and property at the spot or on television? What is a firefighter? A firefighter also known as a fireman, is a rescuer extensively trained in firefighting, primarily to extinguish hazardous fires that threaten property and civilian or natural populations and to rescue people from dangerous situations, like collapsed or burning buildings. Luckily or unluckily, my cousin work as a firefighter. Since he became a firefighter, I never saw him at home having the dinner with us in Chinese New Year. He has to stand guard, and wait for the order if there something happen. We all know that the job as a firefighter is really dangerous. There is an explosion in my city as a result of the oil spilling. All of the firefighters including my cousin in my city went to the first rescue line to save lives and buildings. Everyone is in danger. Unfortunately, someone died in that accident. So that comes to problem: Should firefighters contribute their lives to save other’s lives or properties? My answer is no. It might because that I have someone who has the relationship with me in blood. So that I feel his life is important for me. I want him to protect his own life instead of saving others. How fire happens? It is clear that there...
