For this Current Anthropology Paper, I chose to write about Molly Carney’s research on Cultural Resource Management. Molly was doing her Doctoral research on a Native American Tribe’s land in Washington State. She excavated a site named the Flying Goose (due to the large amount of “annoying” geese who inhabited the area near the site). Based on the very little evidence she found from the pit, one might assume that research would be halted, but through Molly’s creative means of investigation, she was able to determine a great deal about the site’s history. There were no artifacts located in the pit, making her research more difficult. One of the alternative means Molly used to find information was through Geoarchaeology. Many aspects of what we have learned in Anthropology thus far was incorporated into Molly’s lecture, particularly her discussion on artifacts, excavation sites, culture, and current research. This was perfect example of how the field of Anthropology is constantly discovering new things and always changing. Looking at Molly’s research in a broader term that relates to society, she has made contributions to understanding more about Native American History and its culture as well as showing the importance of technology. She was able to make connections between the culture of Native Americans through what she found in her site and previous knowledge about Native American heritage, which aids in illustrating that historical records are in alignment with current research. Through her findings, she is able to share history with not only fellow Anthropologists and students, but also with the Tribe; helping spread awareness about Native American history. Molly was also able to illustrate how advances in technology have greatly influenced more in depth findings in Anthropology. If this site was analyzed many years ago, they most likely would not have been able to discover much of any information about the site.
