This worker dropped of Reyna at the DFCS office at 4:22 P.M. As soon as Reyna saw her mother in the lobby, she called, “Mommy, mommy.” When this worker escorted Reyna and her mother to a visitation room, Reyna found a zebra Saucer chair and insisted in having the visit in the same room. However, they had to move to another visitation room due to some electrical issues. The mother handed Reyna a coke so she could move the zebra Saucer chair to their room. Reyna picked up the magnetic wooden dress-up toy to pair and match the outfits for the bride and groom. Although the mother did not play, she inputted her comments. Reyna checked out the lock board puzzle. The mother read Reyna a book while they were both sitting on the sofa. Listening to the …show more content…
When the mother won the second game, Reyna was not totally persuaded. She accused her mother of cheating and concluded that they were tied. The mother explained to Reyna the reason why she lost because she was only focusing getting four checkers in their color in a row without stopping her opponent to make the same move. In the third game, Reyna dropped red checkers into their slots as fast as she could and announced herself as a winner. The mother tried to catch up so she could be a winner as well. When returning the magnetic wooden dress-up toy, Reyna picked up as many books as she could until her mother did not allow. They sat next to each other on the sofa. While Reyna was flipping the book’s pages, the mother read line after line. They quickly finished one book after another. Reading a book about Thanksgiving, the mother asked, “Do you have any in your family that you are thankful for?” Reyna replied, “Yeah, you.” The mother then asked, “Do you have any friend that you are thankful for?” After a pause, Reyna announced, “Michael.” While Reyna was listening to her mother’s voice, a father asked if he could borrow the gymnastic

...drawn to connect the similarities and differences from the short story “Two Kinds” by Amy Tan to “Everyday Use” by Alice Walker. Although each short story has a different setting, ethnicity, theme, meaning, purpose, past and/present characters, we are still able to determine which characters resembles one another as well as the actions that are portrayed from one character in one story that mirrors another character from the other story. These two stories may have the same point-of-view, but can differ in their way of detailing and explanation. Therefore these were the similarities and differences between the two short stories that caught my attention. First thing that caught my attention was the difference in the ethnicity. The ethnicities can influence the way things are done because all cultures are simply not the same and handles situations differently. The story Two Kinds has a Chinese background, which most of us could relate to. Everyday use has an African American background, which most of us could also relate to as well. The stories are told in different perspectives, but they are both in first person. In Two Kinds, the daughter is telling the story of how her mother believed that you could be anything you want, but there was a trick to that. On the first page in the fourth paragraph, it talks about how the mother chooses what the daughter’s prodigy is going to be. That goes to show us that the Mother in this story has the “Upper Hand” or the “ Do-As-I-Say” voice that most...

...pictures of soldiers, sailors and marines with missing arms or legs. These images touch all of us dearly and we empathize with these wounded warriors. Monetary foundations are created in their honor. They receive “The Purple Heart” medal for sustaining an injury in battle. Generals, heads-of-states, and even presidents line up to shake their hands. The media brings massive attention to their stories and deservingly so. Their lives will forever be affected by the sacrifices they’ve made and by what they’ve gone through. We salute them and call them “Heroes.” However, there are other casualties of war that we don’t hear about as often. They don’t receive the massive attention that is lavished on the others. There are generally no Purple Heart medals waiting for them and no one is lining up to shake their hands. As a matter of fact, we call them by a different name. We call them “Lucky”. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, more commonly known as “PTSD” affects thousands upon thousands of veterans across America. It is not as easily recognizable as a missing limb, but as you can see by Mike’s story, it has a lasting effect on those who suffer from it. From migraine headaches to divorce, Mike can tell you better that anyone that he is indeed a casualty of war. I think that part of the problem is the fact that those in the military (especially men) are trained to be “hard”. They are expected to be “hard”. When you see your buddy killed in front of you, or when another friend loses his arm...

...A SORROWFUL WOMAN The following short story is a study of the gradual disintegration of a human personality. In keeping with the "once upon a time" lead, the style is similar to a fairy tale except that "happily ever after" does not happen. The reader should consider the monotonously repetitive tasks taken over by the husband and later shared with the live in girl and compare these with the usual tasks of men in their jobs at the office or wherever. Then, consider how all of this relates to the final "legacy" of food, laundry, and sonnets. Once upon a time there was a wife and mother one too many times One winter evening she looked at them: the husband durable, receptive, gentle; the child a tender golden three. The sight of them made her so sad and sick she did not want to see them ever again. She told the husband these thoughts. He was attuned to her; he understood such things. He said he understood. What would she like him to do? "If you could put the boy to bed and read him the story about the monkey who ate too many bananas, I would be grateful." "Of course," he said. "Why, that's a pleasure." And he sent her off to bed. The next night it happened again. Putting the warm dishes away in the cupboard, she turned and saw the child's grey eyes approving her movements. In the next room was the man, his chin sunk in the open collar of his favorite wool shirt. He was dozing after her good supper. The shirt was the grey of the child's trusting gaze. She began yelping without...

Wrong With Cinderella

...Imagine the last time it was common for little girls in a toy store to ask their mommies for toy cars or perhaps something sporty, this type of situation is indeed fading. Instead, we find it common for little girls to run to isles that are glowing with neon pink boxes containing their favorite princess figures that they have seen in their favorite movies. Over the recent decades, society has innocently begun to adapt to the “princess” stereotype that is portrayed by corporations through constant advertising and marketing of these products. Through constant recreation of Cinderella, Major businesses’ profit off of the modern obsession and the ever growing “princess” cringe within adolescents by simply taking the perceived character in a film,...

Reflection

...REFLECTION ESSAY Reading and writing do not come easy to me. It’s not that I don’t read well; it’s difficult to find material that interests me. As for writing, I write how I speak, so I don’t think I’m very good at it. Although, because The Norton Reader has such a variety of essays, I found it much easier to appreciate and understand than most books referred to me by friends and family. I chose to read the following * “On Dumpster Diving” by Lars Eighner, because I saw a documentary a few years ago called “Dive!” and wanted to understand the reasons of why people do it. Is it because they are experimenting (for a documentary) or because they have no other choice? * “On Keeping a Notebook” by Joan Didion, because I kept a journal when I was young and I’d like to start again. I thought maybe this essay would give me some tips on doing so. * “Once More to the Lake” by E.B. White, because I thought it would be a good read. The challenges I found were few. My biggest issue was my kids. With college starting one week before the rest of the Northwest, entertaining my twin, 7 year-old boys, in their last week of summer, and managing coursework for three classes, was a huge challenge. Even with them entertaining themselves was a huge distraction because of all the noise they make, indoors and out. Noise reducing headphones seemed to do the trick, but then I constantly worried about what mischief they could be getting themselves into. I also found it difficult to...

...INTRODUCTION Rationale Television is among the most important means of communication nowadays. According to Patton (2006), television commercials have long been an effective means of advertising products. Today they are less dominant in the television landscape due to the rise of TiVo, commercial free cable and other forms of video entertainment. New types of advertising like sponsorship of sporting events featured on television and the placement of products within shows are growing, but traditional commercials still take up significant airtime and account for a large amount of broadcaster revenue. Few television viewers have not been exposed to television commercials. Advertising involves programming that is paid for by companies...

...Describe your intellectual interests, their evolution, and what makes them exciting to you. Tell us how you will utilize the academic programs to further explore your interests, intended major, or field of study. “Look, Mommy, the sun is playing peekaboo with the clouds,” I told my mother, squeezing her hand and squinting at the temperamental sky. It was my first metaphor, although I was unaware of it at the time; I was three years old. Even before I could read, I harbored a natural affinity for the English language, picking up new words easily and using them in unexpected ways. I would string them together like beads on a necklace, carefully selecting and rearranging them for the most ear-pleasing sentence. For me, words were more than a way to communicate - they were a form of art. As I delved into the written word I began to recognize writing as a powerful tool for expression. I turned to poetry and short stories to capture childhood moments, expanding my vocabulary and becoming skilled at transferring raw emotions and ideas onto paper. My parents encouraged me to make frequent trips to the library, and I often staggered home beneath the weight of a pile of novels. When I entered high school as a published author and poet, my writing continued to mature. Although I still marveled at the versatility of language, I now wielded my pen with a more defined sense of purpose. I understood that words could be used for more than the aesthetic appeal that got me through...

Addie, almost 3 years old Each classroom was made up of two adults and a specific age group of preschoolers, from 2 ½, 3, 4, or 5 years old. In the classroom where I began my observation there were two teachers and nine children (we later moved to the playground). I felt that the preschool was a very safe environment for the children. The front yards of the school were completely fenced so no children can run off the property. It seemed to be a healthy place for the children to play both inside and out. The preschool is very spacious and it is across the parking lot from the elementary school it feeds into. Approaching the preschool you are greeted by large, blue letters, “PILGRIM LUTHERAN PRESCHOOL”. There is a gate in the middle of the fence with a handle so that only a certain height can reach. On either side of the path to enter the main building is a nice green lawn where the children can play with toys for outside. As the door is opened you hear an alarm beep which to me said this school is a safe place for these kids, the teachers are always aware when someone walks into the building. There is a spacious kitchen where the teachers prepare their snacks for their class. There are four classrooms for the four specific age groups. Each classroom was equipped with desks and chairs suitable for young children...

Books for Military Children

...Books for Military Children ENG 290 1422 South Tech Lane, Meridian, Idaho, 83642 November 26, 2013 Mr. Thomas Luna Superintendent State Board Of Education 650 West State Street, Boise, Idaho, 83720 Dear Mr. Luna, We are a concerned group of students from University of Phoenix who want to address a lack of appropriate reading material for our students from military families. These children, and their families, are seemingly always on the move. The culture shock a typical military child goes through every time his family moves can be stressful. Although there are communities within the confines of the base, the world outside the gates can be overwhelming and even scary. Within the gates and fences there is relative safety, and a sense of security. However, outside those parameters are challenges that most children may have no idea how to handle or what to expect when they arrive in their new temporary home. There is a need for children of military families to make friends easily, and to find a community of his or her peers, but many of them find it hard to be accepted into a group when continually viewed as a temporary “new kid.” Rarely do military children have lifelong friendships from their childhood. They will better equip themselves to make friends easier and form meaningful relationships if they would prepare themselves with a sneak peak at the culture they will be living in ahead of time. Our goal is to put more books regarding these issues into...

Goals

...My career choice for as long as I can remember is to go into the social services. I volunteer in social services, and I have had 2 jobs requiring a bachelors without having an associates. I love being in the social services, empowering people to advocate for themselves is my forte`. I have run across many former clients, that expressed I am doing the community a dis-service by not working in the field. Then again when time permits I go to homeless meal sites and see what’s up, and if anyone could use some assistance accessing services. The goal I have always wanted for as long as I can remember is to pursue higher education. My associates is taking me 10 years, because life got in the way. In addition I was busy raising kids. As I have added more life experiences it became clear major goals should be geared towards getting into Social Services. I kept a goal list visible; as the years went on. To keep my dream close, and my goals in perspective, I volunteered at any agency in the field. I am interested in taking assessments and exploring my goals. In career workshops, and here in college I took the Jung Typology Assessment. The results came out ENFP (Extraversion, Intuition, Feeling, and Perceiving). This test is compatible with my career choice working in the social services. I get my energy, and become emotionally recharged by being with people. I value compassion, empathy, and understanding. In addition, Dr. Garner’s multiple intelligences assessment reinforced I am an interpersonal...
