Reflection on Motel Pool By P.K. Page

This poem transformed an everyday situation such as a simple motel pool into a unique event which makes you think about different situations. Its starts off by saying “the plump good-natured children play in the blue pool” this line makes you think that the author is describing what little children experience in the summer seasons, the children are having their first encounter from the previous winter season where the fat on their bodies protected them from the freezing environment. The image of plump children are usually looked at as very young, not yet the age of puberty so they still have baby fat. The symbol that these plump children represent is innocence and purity. The poem continues into describing how there children are playing in the wet dirt on the exterior of the pool. The dirt is getting wet by the blue pool waters so the children are now slipping and sliding in the dirt which gives the appearance of oiled skin. “slide and tumble, oiled, in the slippery sun.” When water is touched it moves into wave patterns which is the image. the symbol of “churning the water; or-seamstresses-cut and sew with jack-knives its satins invisibly” is described by the movements a child's curious hand makes as its swirled around through the water. The last section in the poem states “and it greens the grass, greens the hanging leaf, greens Adam and Eden, greens little eve” i feel like the refers to how grass is usually thought to be green, when its green its is usually healthy and pure, the water that is splashing out of the pool is what revives the surrounding grass and leaves. The author is also drawing a mental image of Adam in the garden of Eden watching how as time goes by and the grass gets greener and more beautiful, Eve is also becoming happier which results in her becoming more admirable. Their youth and innocence is what is watering the the earth with life, as it seems the word green is used to represent the attractiveness.

...Task 1: 1.1 Discuss accommodation and front office services for different organizations. Different hotel offers different type of accommodation and services. Some hotel may offer a complimentary breakfast when guest checked in but some might not have this type of services available in their hotel. These hotels are categorized under a system called the hotel rating systems. Hotel ratings are used to classify hotels according to their quality. Its main purpose is to inform travelers on basic facilities that can be expected. (Wikipedia, 2014) There are various ranges of hotel star ratings, from 1 star hotel to luxurious 5 star hotel. Hotel Star Ratings | | | |   | | |   | | Example of hotel star ratings For this report, as a Rooms Division Manager who previously worked in Rizqun International Hotel, a 5 star hotel in Brunei Darussalam, I am now working in The Brunei Hotel, a 3 star hotel and are required to restructure and analyse the differences of the housekeeping department and front office department between a 5 star hotel and a 3 star hotel. Housekeeping Department A housekeeping department in a 5 star hotel has more responsibilities than a 3 star hotel, because a 5 star hotel’s housekeeping department require a lot of staff as there are more rooms to be cleaned. Benjamin Franklin This chapter has a lot to do with implementing the spirit of Benjamin Franklin’s observation—in cost management terms—that it really does matter how accurately you calculate a cost. Why? Having accurate costs is important for a variety of reasons: a company might find that it has a difficult time determining which of its products is most profitable. Alternatively, it finds its sales increasing but profits declining and cannot understand why. Perhaps the company keeps losing competitive bids for products and services and does not understand why. In many cases, accurate cost information is the answer to these questions. Accurate cost information provides a competitive advantage...

Design History

...Caroline Barnes and Simon Jackson This paper offers a critical reading of Robin Boyd’s narrative of the Australian nation created for Australia’s pavilion at Expo’70. The critique offered is from an environmental perspective, using this example to lead into a broader reflection on Australian design history’s ‘modernity problem’. We argue that although the examination of Australia as a socio-cultural context for the practice of design continues to engage scholars, the will to profess the existence of progressive Australian design has precluded significant examination of design’s regressive effects. The current environmental crisis is, as Arturo Escobar argues, ‘a crisis of modernity, to the extent that modernity has failed to enable sustainable worlds.’[1] Design is implicated here for its contribution to environmental degradation, as is design history for accounts that validate designers’ development of concepts, processes and products that impose the unsustainable on societies. The latter is pronounced in Australian design history. When modernity and its cultural manifestations are understood as European inventions, admitting limited scope for cultural exchange, claiming historical significance for Australian design inevitably involves the uncritical application of imported principles.[2] The halting attempts to write Australian design history are mostly bound up in proselytizing for the values and benefits of the modern and eulogising designers’ efforts to force change in the...

Job Satisfaction

...EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Employees are the most important determinant and leading factor that determine the success of an organization in a competitive environment. This is especially true for service organizations that rely heavily on their good behavioural employees to provide friendly and courteous services to their customers in this competitive environment. Job satisfaction refers to “a collection of attitudes that workers have about their jobs”. These attitudes may derive from a facet of satisfaction or as an overall aspect of the job; however, the focus of the study is on job satisfaction in the most general term. It is very important to study whether employees are satisfied, because it is intuitively believed that workers who are more satisfied will likely exhibit more positive feelings, thoughts, and actions toward their job. Similarly, studying about whether employees are committed to the organization that they work for is important. By definition, organizational commitment refers to “an attitude that reflects the strength of the linkage between an employee and an organization” The purpose of this study is to analyse the job satisfaction. The study was conducted on Uday Samudra Leisure Beach Hotel Kovalam. Employee’s productivity is largely related to their level of job satisfaction and in fact, the turnover rate can be reduced with a higher level of organizational commitment. Altogether, fifty employees were surveyed for the study. From the survey it is clear...

Growing the Private Sector

...PART 3 GROWING THE PRIVATE SECTOR CHAPTER 17 INSTITUTIONAL ANALYSIS Institutions refer to arrangements and processes for the purposeful administration or management of a polity or the management of an entity. The importance of institutions will probably be best understood from the governance perspective. In this regard, we recall that governance is 111 primarily concerned with two inter-related issues. These are (a) existence of societal institutions for managing social relations; and (b) the degree of independence enjoyed by each institution in the performance of its assigned duties. Hence, the state of institutions along these two dimensions determines the quality of governance. Herein lies the desirability of assessing the current state of institutional setting in which ODSEEDS would be designed and implemented. For the purpose of our discussion, we have identified three major groups of stakeholders around which institutions could be appraised. These groups comprise (a) the government (public sector), (b) business (private sector); and (c) civil society (the people). These are the three primary partners (3PP) in the development process of any nation. The characteristic of each partner group in Ondo State are highlighted briefly as follows: 17.1 The Public Sector Ondo State has a seasoned executive arm of government, a legacy it inherited from the early 60s. The state’s civil service is blessed with competent technocrats and is expected to serve as...
