...Mother Nature The beginning of all wilderness started with someone who went by many names. Some called her the Woman of the Wild, some the Creator of Elements, but she was more commonly known as Mother Nature. Mother Nature made not only the sea, the sky, and the earth, but all things that lived on it. She had two daughters. The eldest daughter, Venus, was jealous of her mother’s fame and respect and wanted it for herself. The younger of the two, Ariel, was very timid and not many could say they had ever heard her speak before. It was obvious who was more responsible within the sisters, but it was also obvious which sister people preferred to be in company with. Although they had their differences, Venus and Ariel were close and enjoyed each other’s company, like sisters should. They were also very close to their mother. Mother Nature loved her daughters for who they were, despite the differences between them. She told her daughters stories of the things she created, how rewarding it was and how power should always be used for good. ...The Evil of Human Nature and Mother Nature When someone has what they call a great day, there is always an aspect of it that they would say was not too great. If a person were to think back to the best day of their lives, they would also be able to remember something that troubled them that same day. The size of the ‘troubling’ or ‘bad’ aspect doesn’t dismiss the fact that there was indeed a point of evil in their day. If a man was planning to propose to his girlfriend that night after dinner, and he had a whole plan and was ready to pop the question, and she doesn’t quite go with his plan like he thought she would, forcing him to improvise. We all know that improvising for something as big as a proposal is a very hard and stressful thing; all you want is for it to be perfect. In the end, he still proposes to her as best he could think and she happily says yes. This is a great day for the both of them; they are now a happily engaged couple. In the chapters“Cooling the Lava” and “Los Angeles against the Mountains” the situations and catastrophes that have caused harm to these places demonstrate that Mother Nature has its own way of life and people cannot simply stop what is happening. With McPhee telling his readers that people who try to change or stop nature need to realize that this attempt is futile, because humans cannot control nature. They cannot stop the volcanoes from erupting lava or can we stop the boulders from falling down the mountain. In the book/monograph/treatise, in the chapter “Cooling the Lava” Thorbjorn, who is a native from Iceland has this idea that he will stop the lava from flooding by cooling. With his logic of cooling the lava, the water would reduce the heat in order to create a wall of cooled lava that would dam the flow. “The lava should be cooled not so much by the edge as by the acre, and that called not only for more pumps but also for the development of material and personnel up on top of the advancing flow”(McPhee 98).
