Identify the ports, connectors and slots on a motherboard 3. Outline the computer boot process 4. State the meaning of common computer abbreviations and acronyms Content Summary Major Components in the System Unit Case A computer case is the enclosure that contains the main components of a computer. The size and shape of a computer case is usually determined by the form factor of the motherboard. In computing, "form factor" is an industry term for the size, shape and format of computer motherboards, power supplies, cases, and add-on cards. Most desktop computers have a form factor that is some variant of ATX. A case designed for an ATX motherboard and power supply may take on several external forms, such as a vertical tower (designed to sit on the floor, height > width) or a flat desktop (height < width). Computer cases usually include: sheet metal enclosures for a power supply unit and drive bays; a rear panel that can accommodate peripheral connectors protruding from the motherboard and expansion slots; a power button, a reset button, and LEDs to indicate power status as well as hard drive and network activity. Major component locations * The motherboard is usually screwed to the case along its largest face, which could be the bottom or the side of...

Network Engineer

...Lab 4: Identify Motherboard Components and Form Factors (hands-on) * Motherboard: Is an essential piece of any computer system. It’s what you plug your components into, and what your components use to “talk” to each other. When explaining how computer systems and components work, I like to compare them to that of the human body. How? Because if the CPU (Central Processing Unit) were the brain of the machine, then the motherboard would have to be the nervous system. It works very similarly to the nervous system, in that it essentially coordinates the actions and signals from the CPU (brain) to and from the rest of the machine. A. Motherboard Components: 1. Back panel connectors and Ports: Connectors and ports for connecting the computer to external devices such as display ports, audio ports, USB ports, Ethernet ports, PS/2 ports. 2. PCI SLOTS: PCI: Peripheral Component Interconnect Slot for older expansion cards such as sound cards, network cards, connector cards. See image below for a close-up view. Have been largely replaced by PCI-Express x1 slots (see motherboard parts #3 below). 3. PCI Express x1 slots: Slot for modern expansion cards such as sound cards, network cards (Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and Bluetooth), connector cards (USB, FireWire, eSATA) and certain low-end graphics cards. See image below for a close-up view. 4. PCI Express x16 slots: Slot for discrete graphic cards and high bandwidth devices such as top-end solid state drives. See image below for a...

Unit 4 Assignment 1 Video Summary

...Motherboards The motherboard represents the logical foundation of the computer. Everything on the computer must be connected to the motherboard. When building a computer you must first decide what Motherboard or what CPU you will use, because your Motherboard will tell you what CPU you should buy and vise-versa. In that note, you can’t buy a case without your Motherboard selected, the size and shape of your case are determined by the form factor of your Motherboard. Form Factors: ATX * ATX replaced the older AT because of its more compact design and it’s better organized which makes it easier to work on. * ATX support 20 pin P1 connector and the newer 24 pin P1 Connector. * Supports 2 IDE Connectors and will probably have 1 or 2 SATA connectors * Soft Power Switch which allows for the PC to go through the shutdown process by not immediately shutting off when button pressed. BTX * This Form Factor is compatible with all of the ATX functions including the 20 and 24 pin connector * It was designed for better airflow with an intake vent on the front and Exhaust vent on the back, to work with this design CPU and Memory is installed parallel which creates better cooling for the CPU(No blocked airflow). NLX * Supports Riser cards. These are cards that connect to the motherboard expansion slots to allow connection of additional expansion cards. * Riser cards are also known as Daughter cards BUSES * The copper traces you find on the bottom...

Nt1110Sa3.1

...NT1110 Short Answer 3.1 1/25/15 In this essay I will be describing what the major components of a motherboard are, why upgrading just the motherboard wouldn’t be necessary because it is limited, and deviate the need for different busses on the motherboard with 64bit busses and 32bit. Basically the processor socket is the input socket for the processor, the ddr2 memory slots are for the ram (random access memory), and the heat sink acts as a radiator for the processor on the north bridge, the south bridge chip is the side of the motherboard that manages Legacy, Bios, IDE, ISA, USB, and PCI. The PCI slot is for adapters for optional video input or modems, the CMOS battery remembers the BIOS of the motherboard even when pc is turned off or unplugged, unless it is removed and the board is discharged while everything is unplugged and removed and the power button is held down for a certain amount of time depending on the manufacturer of the product, the port cluster is the I/O(input output) port holes of the motherboard, The SATA host adapter is for high speed connection usually on laptop HDDS but are now on desktops as well, the ATX12 power connector is a cluster of resistors and components that transfer the power prom the external source, and the mounting holes are the holes to mount the motherboard to the tower. Just upgrading the motherboard isn’t going to give you much more performance increases, other hardware is required such as more ram, a faster processor, a more...

Exploring the Motherboard

...Exploring the Motherboard and Busses Short Answer 7/29/15 Mr. Lanning Gene Jackson II The components of a motherboard are the cpu, bios, mass storage interfaces, serial and parallel ports, expansion slot and controllers for peripherals. The CPU controls the operations of the hardware and software. BIOS (basic input/output system) is software that controls basic computer hardware functions. Mass storage are things such as the RAM which temporarily stores files while the computer is functioning. The serial and parallel ports allow SETA and other connections to be hooked up to the motherboard. Expansion slots are for video cards and other such hardware that will increase your motherboards value and the controllers are for things such as keyboards or mouses. The improvement upon upgrading the motherboard would be limited because the motherboard is what holds the most important pieces of the computer together and doesn’t have much more significance other than that. It is more of a highway between all of the other functioning pieces. The buses communicate with the CPU and other devices in the computer. One set of buses connects the CPU to RAM and external caches. Another set of buses connects a large number of different I/O devices. These functions cannot be performed on a single bus because there are too many different functions to be performed. It would be a mess and confusing and could result in a overload on the bus components. 32 bit busses may still be necessary even...

Replacing a Motherboard

...Motherboard Replacement Process IT280 January 15, 2012 In the following paragraphs, you will learn how to remove and replace a motherboard. It can be a simple process if all the steps are followed completely. These steps will allow a computer techie to “do it yourself” since these are simple and easy steps. The first step of replacing a motherboard is to remove the old motherboard. You will then need to remove all connectors to the rest of the components for easy access of removing the old motherboard and not damaging the new one. Next, unplug the power supply and the data cable from the hard drives. Remove the PCI adapters and the video card. All of the adapters that mount in motherboard slots are secured to the back rail of the case with a single screw. You may as well take all the screws out at the same time and put them aside in a glass jar or any other small container to keep them from getting lost. Then remove the data cables from the old motherboard. Lastly, remove the small screws that are keeping the motherboard attached to the case. To easily install the new motherboard, you will need to make sure the I/O cover matches the new motherboard. If not, use the new one that came with the motherboard and punch out the correct ports and then install it in the case. Make sure that the motherboard and the holes match up with the case before screwing the cover into place. Then install the motherboard at an angle with the I/O core first making sure everything will line...

Nt1110 Module 3 Short Answer

...What are the major components of the motherboard? Provide a brief description of each component. The processor is the chip where all the computing is done also known as the brain of the computer. The memory or SIMMs (single inline memory modules) are commonly used to store information the computer is working on. The chipset controls the hard drives, USB ports, and generates sounds the computer makes. Expansion slots let you attach additional cards through connectors like video, sound, and modems. The I/O bank lets you connect devices to your computer through a set of connectors. Upgrading only the motherboard will give some performance improvement to a computer system. Why would the improvement be limited? This improvement is limited because just upgrading the motherboard doesn’t upgrade the speed vastly if you don’t upgrade the Ram your computer will possibly running just as slow as it was before. What is the need for all the different busses found on a motherboard? Why can these busses not be replaced with a single bus? You need different busses on your motherboard because there is simply too much exchange or flow of data for just one bus therefore you assign them they’re own devices or jobs to keep the performance of the computer from slowing down. With 64-bit busses available, why should 32-bit busses be provided as well? If your system is older it may require the use of 32-bit busses instead of 64-bit busses because it they just are not compatible with newer...

Motherboard and Busses

...Assignment – Motherboards and Busses 1. The improvement of the motherboard will be limited because of compatibility issue with other hardware. Other devices run at a different speed and have different processing requirement, for example the memory and hard drive; without upgrading these components too will limit the performance of the motherboard. 2. There is a need for the different busses to be on the motherboard for free flow of information processing by way of obtaining different sets of instructions. 3. A 64-bit OS has a higher functionality than a 32-bit, a 32-bit will be needed because of the backward compatibilities of the 64-bit. 4. The following requirements must and can be considered when building a PC: * DO NOT plug anything in unless the computer is fully turned off.  * DO NOT install anything unless you are grounded through a wrist strap * DO NOT over-tighten or strip any screws.  * Never force anything. If it does not fit or plug in then figure out why. * Wear surgical gloves while putting the PC together Next  Choose your components. You will need a:  Motherboard  CPU Memory  Hard drive  CPU Cooler  Graphics card.  Power Supply Unit.  The motherboard should be compatible with any CPU you choose. Some Essey

...A power supply is an electronic device that supplies electric energy to an electrical load. The primary function of a power supply is to convert one form of electrical energy to another and, as a result, power supplies are sometimes referred to as electric power converters. Some power supplies are discrete, stand-alone devices, whereas others are built into larger devices along with their loads. Examples of the latter include power supplies found in desktop computers and consumer electronics devices. A CD-ROM /ˌsiːˌdiːˈrɒm/ is a pre-pressed optical compact disc which contains data. The name is an acronym which stands for "Compact Disc Read-Only Memory". Computers can read CD-ROMs, but cannot write on the CD-ROM's which are not writable or erasable. A network switch (sometimes known as a switching hub) is a computer networking device that is used to connect devices together on a computer network by performing a form of packet switching. A network switch is considered more advanced than a hub because a switch will only send a message to the device that needs or requests it, rather than broadcasting the same message out of each of its ports. A network switch is a multi-port network bridge that processes and forwards data at the data link layer(layer 2) of the OSI model. Some network switches have additional features, including the ability to route packets; these switches are commonly known as layer-3 or multilayer switches. Switches exist for various types of networks including Fibre...
