Individual Assignment 1: Short Essay on Movies and Market Research
1) Today, Marketers and film makers cannot work without one another anymore. A filmmakers create the film, portray their emotions, their ideas and it is someone who has a personal style and keeps creative control over his works. On the other hand, a marketer is somebody who, once the film is finished, is in charge of advertising. They deals with the popularity, raise the audiences. These are the marketers who produce the trailers and make people want to go see the movie. Their goal is to have a good criticism from the media and attract as many people as possible to have the maximum cinema-viewing public or DVD sold. Marketers are therefore more centered on the side “popularity”. Their vision about that is the film makers’. For a film maker a good film is a film that represents his artistic desires he had in mind. In contrast to a marketer, for who a good film is a film that enters the box office through number of person who went to see it.
As far as I am concerned, I think that marketer’s perspective counts more to film audiences because their goal is to attract audiences, and they put all their efforts into that direction. A film maker can produce a film which, according to him, is perfect but which will not appeal to the public. Marketers follow the trends of people, what they like to watch or not and gives an image of the film that will necessarily correspond to a specific target audience.

2) Marketing plays a very important role determining the content and the production decisions for films in the Hollywood system. It promotes the movies driving the consumer to want it by spending amazing amounts of money and making public relations efforts. The marketing company chosen by the movie producer will make publicity stunts and will get the actors to go on talk shows very much helps the movie industry promote their flicks. Teasers and trailers play a large part of game promotion today and will go up to 20 if the budget is enough. Marketing can actually decide the movie's fate in the Hollywood competitive market in fact public relations for Hollywood movies are not as easy as it looks if it is done incorrectly it may hurt the movie ,that's about the extent of it. I think this is good from a movie consumer's perspective because marketers are doing everything in order to please the audience. Generally it results in good films because a lot of people like them but I think that films are no longer what they used to be.
