Mrs. Tess Hutchinson stands out right from the start: she arrives at the lottery late. She explains to Mr. Summers that she was doing her dishes and forgot what day it was. The town treats her lateness lightly, but several people comment on it, “in voices just loud enough to be heard across the crowd, ‘Here comes your Missus, Hutchinson,’ and ‘ Bill, she made it after all.’” (Jackson 501). It is ironic that she is the one who wins the lottery, and is fated to be stoned. So Tess Hutchinson has already been noticed by people as one who is not entirely part of the group. Before the drawing she is friendly with the other women, pretending to be pleased to be present. The very moment that she sees is her family that draws the black dot, though, her egotism is evident. “You didn’t give him time enough to take any paper he wanted. I saw you. It wasn’t fair!” (Jackson 504). She continues to scream about the unfairness of the ritual up until her stoning. Mrs. Hutchinson knew the lottery was wrong, but she never did anything about it. What a lot of Soldiers do not understand that includes appointments made by them or someone else. We have appointment times, SP times, formation times and many other start times that dictate we will be there. If a Convoy has an SP time of fifteen hundred hours and the Soldiers decide to show up late because they did not feel like getting ready on time people could die. If they rolled out on time, they may have avoided the ambush or avoided the Vbid that hit them in the bottleneck. It sounds extreme but time management plays a critical role in the Army. When you make an appointment that spot has been reserved for you. That means if you have been given the last slot someone else is going to have to wait for another one to open up. This could be one day or one month. And because you missed it someone else is still going to have to wait when they could have had that spot and been there. If you are going to miss the appointment or cannot make it due to mission they do allow us to cancel the appointment with in twenty four hours. The Army allows us to make appointments for whatever we need. Be it for a medical appointment, house goods, CIF, Smoking Sensation or whatever we need these recourses are available to us. ...The title of Amy Tan’s novel, Two Kinds (Tan, 2009), is a reference to two different kinds of daughter, as defined by the narrators mother (Tan, 2009, p. 412). One kind, the obedient daughter, embraces her mother’s wishes and willingly follows the path the mother has chosen for her. The other kind, the disobedient daughter, rejects her mother’s wishes and willfully follows the path she has chosen for herself. I really had a difficult time with part two of question number one. From my perspective, there was no discernible connection between the first sentence of the story; “My mother believed you could be anything you wanted to be in America” (Tan, 2009, p. 405) and the last sentence of the story; “And after I played them both a few times, I realized they were two halves of the same song” (Tan, 2009, p. 414). I believe that in the beginning, Jing-mei felt her mother was selfish, in her determination to mold her daughter into a piano prodigy. However, in the end she realizes that it was Mrs. Woo’s faith in her daughter’s potential that motivated her to push so hard (SparkNotes Editors, 2003). Furthermore, I think that for Jing-Mei, the piano was a symbol of her mother’s expectations, than disappointment and ultimately rejection, in the beginning of the story. By the end of the story, the piano becomes a symbol of Mrs. Woo’s acceptance (Tan, 2009, p. 413). This was essentially the lesson Jing-Mei had to learn in order to find inner peace. The struggle that a mother has in wanting her child to have a better life and all have all the opportunities that she didn’t have growing up drives her mother to the point of almost unrealistic expectations for her daughter to be good at something and become known as a ‘prodigy.’ Throughout this story, Jing-mei learns a little about herself and in the end, later in life, begins to understand her mother and her expectations for her as well. The foothills and central coast regions of California are described in detail in the stories, “The Outcasts of Poker Flat,” by Bret Harte and “The Joy Luck Club,” by Amy Tan, and the poem, “The Purse Seine,” by Robinson Jeffers. “The Outcasts of Poker Flat” by Bret Harte is set approximately halfway between the mining camps of Poker Flat and Sandy Bar, located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas, during the California Gold Rush in November 1850. The main characters are the Duchess, a prostitute; John Oakhurst, a gambler; Mother Shipton, a madam (who owns the prostitute Duchess); Tom Simson, a very innocent young man; Uncle Billy, a thief and drunk; and Piney Woods, who is Tom Simson’s bride-to-be.
