Out the window, a palette of colors stretchs out beneath me, like an artist’s canvas. An expanse of twisting brown rivers and mats of green shrub pass below, as the majestic, snow-covered Mt. McKinley rises in the distance. Glaciers cascade down from the summit, like highways racing into the valleys. A gust of wind blows against the plane, causing it to shudder. I am overcome by a feeling of insignificance, as we quickly advance towards the immense mountain. The plane takes a sharp turn and prepares to land on Eldridge Glacier. Other planes, already resting on the surface of the glacier, appear to be the size of a child’s toy. Our plane shakes again and swiftly descends. Looking down within the ice crevices and pools, we observe a vibrant shade of blue that cannot be …show more content…
Ahead of me lies a thirty mile stretch of ice and snow. The noise, from one of the other planes, catches my attention when it begins to take off. The pilot releases the brake, the propellers whirl, and the plane is pulled along on its skis. With a deafening roar, the plane speeds down the makeshift runway and eventually soars into the air. I return my gaze up towards the summit of Mt. McKinley. Snow is being blown through the thin air, giving the mountain a sinister look. Unaccompanied, I walk away from the plane and head towards the towering cliff beside us. The rocks are dull gray and worn from many years of relentless wind. As if controlled by another, my hand instinctively reaches out to touch fridge, wet stone. I feel as if I am connecting with something far grander than anything I have ever experienced. I stride back to the plane to meet with my family. The radiant sunlight reflects off the snow and into my eyes, making difficult to see. To get more closely connected to the mountain, I lie in the crisp white snow and gander at the feathery blanket of clouds in the

...The School Access to Emergency Epinephrine Act (S.1884 and H.R 3627) is a bill that will inspire states to enact laws that will permit schools to keep stock epinephrine (epipen) in the school medicine cabinet. The epinephrine will not be prescribed for any particular student and will be readily available for any student having anaphylaxis. The bill will also allow school staff to administer epinephrine without any liability. Just recently, a first grader, Amarria Johnson of Virginia State died after experiencing an episode of anaphylaxis from eating peanut. Her death could have been prevented, but the school had no epinephrine on hand to save her life(TheHill.com,2012).According to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (2011),the delay in using epinephrine is closely associated with death from anaphylaxis, expecially anaphylaxis resulting from peanuts allergy (niaid,2011).Symptoms of anaphylaxis include itching ,swelling of lips and tongue, tightness of throat, skin hives, vomiting, diarrhea ,cramps, shortness of breath, cough, wheezing, weak pulse, dizziness and passing out (niaid,2011). ...C h a p t e r 1 Prewriting GETTING STARTED (OR SOUP-CAN LABELS CAN BE FASCINATING) For many writers, getting started is the hardest part. You may have noticed that when it is time to begin a writing assignment, you suddenly develop an enormous desire to straighten your books, water your plants, or sharpen your pencils for the fifth time. If this situation sounds familiar, you may find it reassuring to know that many professionals undergo these same strange compulsions before they begin writing. Jean Kerr, author of Please Don’t Eat the Daisies, admits that she often finds herself in the kitchen reading soup-can labels—or anything—in order to prolong the moments before taking pen in hand. John C. Calhoun, vice president under Andrew Jackson, insisted he had to plow his fields before he could write, and Joseph Conrad, author of Lord Jim and other novels, is said to have cried on occasion from the sheer dread of sitting down to compose his stories. To spare you as much hand-wringing as possible, this chapter presents some practical suggestions on how to begin writing your short essay. Although all writers must find the methods that work best for them, you may find some of the following ideas helpful. But no matter how you actually begin putting words on paper, it is absolutely essential to maintain two basic ideas concerning your writing task. Before you write a single sentence, you should always remind yourself that 1. You have some valuable ideas to tell your reader,...
