The U.S. population faces an obesity problem that continues to grow each year. According to the CDC the percentage of adults aged 20 years and older has increased from 22.9 percent in 1988 to 1994, to a whopping 34.9 percent between 2011 and 2012 (cdc.gov. 2014). As the obesity rate increases so do associated health problems such as diabetes, high cholesterol and hypertension. Because of this, there is a push for fast food restaurants to incorporate healthier options in their list of menu items. Introducing healthier items to McDonald’s menu is not a new idea. There have been changes made to the children’s Happy Meal that now includes apples, your choice of milk, apple juice or another beverage, as well as yogurt, in the form of Gogurt which appeals to younger children. By having these options, McDonald’s has given the population what they were asking for but it could go further in offering more options that may not please the masses but will certainly give a few more options to adults that are looking for a healthier fast meal. With the healthier choices in mind it has been decided to look into a couple items that might make a difference for that health conscious consumer. These options would be a vegetarian burger and as a side alternative, cottage cheese with a choice of added fruit or plain.
One of these options is not new and something that McDonald’s currently offers but not in the United States. McDonald’s currently has a veggie burger that is offered in India, where no beef or pork is consumed. Again, this is not a new option to incorporate into the menu. “In 2011, McDonald’s then-chief operating officer, (and now chief executive officer) Don Thompson, told investors that the company had attempted several times to launch veggie burgers in the U.S., including in Southern California in the early 2000s.

There are a lot of things that can go south when operating a business. I work in the food business. Like Mr. Kabasella, we have a variety of items for customers to choose from. There are times where we will introduce a new item to see how it will sell. If the product sells well enough, then we keep it as a main item. If not, then we either pull it or make it a seasonal item. What I would do is first look at the location of the business. You want to have a location that is widely populated. You also need to make sure that other businesses that do the same type of sales isn’t over run in the area or else you won’t bring in much revenue. In this case, he is near a university, so there is a good size population in the area. Now moving to the interior of the business. The inside seems to be set up rather well to house a lot of people of need be. There is also room for dancing considering the music being played. It seems to be a type of restaurant setup for all ages which is good for bringing in sales. To me it would seem that one of the issues to be looked at is the menu. African food may not be a food that is too commonly found in the U.S. maybe since...
