Introduction
Question One
Carefully review the assignment scenario/case study. From the limited information in the scenario/case study, along with your answers to the unit three written assignment, identify at least three direct and specific long-term and three direct and specific short term operations changes that Albatross Anchor must make to gain a clear and sustainable competitive advantage (provide detailed information to validate and support each recommended change)
Long-Term Operational Changes
(01) An improvement in technology can increase efficiency and effectiveness throughout the plant. It is obvious that technology changes at such a rapid rate, older technology can slow down or inhibit the manufacturing process, making it longer for the products to reach the consumer. A plan over the span of 3 to 5 years to update technology is realistic because it gives enough time for the updates to be made effectively.
(02) The purchase of additional equipment can take away the need to share manufacturing equipment between the two different types of anchors. The new equipment should be top of the line, because this will not only fall in line with the upgrades to technology, but will be the most cost-effective. Time is what will be saved primarily, since the separate equipment will do away with the 36 hours that are needed during equipment change-overs between production runs.
(03) There should be two manufacturing areas, one for the snag hook anchor, and another for the bell anchors. This may increase production because it will create to separate manufacturing areas, and will address the new technology and the new equipment.
Short-Term Operational Changes
(01) Albatross Anchor must update the environmental standards of their plant to bring them up to code. This will not only update key safety and environmental standards, it will also deter the agency from having to pay big money in fines in the future. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), there is a published list of the fines that the compliance and enforecement division releases yearly. These fines are in the millions and billions for the halting of pollution, and the subsequent clean up of hazardous wastes.
(02) An effective change for the short term might be to separate the manufacturing plant from the administrative offices. This way, there would be less interruptions and an increase in productivity.
(03) Another change might be to have very precise schedules for shipping internationally and receiving of goods. The shipping and receiving department would benefit form not having simultaneous materials coming in and going out. This may cause errors and decrease efficiency. A solution would be to set predetermined days to ship internationally and to receive incoming raw materials or stagger delivery of the goods.
Question Two
From the list of ten operational issues in the Unit 6 assignment instructions select four operational issues. For each of the four operational issues explain in detail that operational issue will help Albatross Anchor improve; 1) job retention, 2) employee morale, and 3) employee dedication.
Operational Issue One: Cross Training. Employees that are cross trained can be extremely valuable because they are able to do a multiplicity of tasks, and be on hand in case an employee is sick or if an area in the business is short-handed. (Russell & Taylor III, 2012). It is likely that employees who are cross trained take their job more seriously, and often perform better because they know many areas of the company. They know their value to the company, they perform a variety of tasks, and have a degree of loyalty to the firm which is exemplified by their willingness to learn aspects across the board at their company.
Operational Issue Two: Gainsharing and profit sharing. Gainsharing and profit sharing allow employees to receive a portion of the gains when a company meets their objectives (Russell & Taylor III, 2011). Employees will feel more empowered because their contribution is making a difference. Profit sharing and Gainsharing both contribute to employee dedication and increasing morale because the performances of the employees are directly related to the financial objectives.
Operational Issue Three: Job Design. Right person; right role is a common term amongst many companies today. This directly correlates to job design. Not every employee can perform every function within a company. Some employees are better suited to certain roles than others. Frederick Herzberg identified attributes that make a potential job design a good fit (Russell & Taylor III, 2011). Employees that are well suited to their jobs are more likely to be happy and stay at their job. They will be happier because they will not be ill suited to handle the task at hand.
Operational Issue Four: Worker analysis. An essential function of any business, knowing the demands of a specific role within the organization and knowing which employees are able to complete the tasks are essential. For example, a job that calls for heavy lifting repeatedly may not fit someone that does not have a physical capacity to lift heavy objects. It is important to match the employee based on their physical, emotional and behavioral limits. Quite similar to job design, if employees are well suited to their jobs are more likely to be happy and stay at their job. They will be happier because they will not be ill suited to handle the task at hand (Russell & Taylor III, 2011).
