Definition
Mucus extravasation phenomenon is a clinical term that refers to a type of oral mucocele that is a common, benign lesion originating from a minor salivary gland. It contains saliva in its interior (Neville et. al 454). The term “mucocele,” derived from a Latin word, mucus and coele means cavity. It is of a "pseudo-cyst" nature because unlike a salivary duct cyst, the mucocele lacks an epithelial lining. Basically, "the development of mucoceles …show more content…

Also, a mucus extravasation cyst can be identified by observing its clinical manifestation. It appears as a "dome-shaped," "smooth-surfaced mass ranging from a few millimeters to 2 cm in diameter" (Regezi et. al 184) and the maximum size is reached in several days. On palpation, the lesion feels compressible and sometimes firm. In addition, the mucocele gives off a bluish translucent tone which reflects the color of the spilled mucin located below the mucosal surface. However, deeper mucoceles' color normally matches that of the surrounding, unaffected mucosa. Regarding its duration, the mucocele can last for a few days to several years.
