This story was very sad, it had such a tragic ending for the lives of two boys. As I read about Larry’s childhood it seriously brought tears to my eyes. How can a child be put through so much. I felt as if the system failed him as well as Brandon. Larry’s death could have been prevented. A murder in the eighth grade is not something you hear so often. In class, we learned that we have to analyze the client’s problem, in order to get a better understanding of who they are and identifying their needs. We also learned about barriers that can prevent clients from seeking assistance in dealing with their issues. A third thing that was taught to us was about Values and ethical standards. As I read, I immediately started to analyze the past of the two boys. In trying to identify the problem I looked at their past history. They both had a lot in common. Larry had been in the system from the age of 2. His mother was a drug user and father was M.I.A, he had a speech impediment, and as he got older they diagnosed him with Autism. Larry was gay and very flamboyant about his sexual orientation. His openness about it had become an issue in school, a lot of the other kids would bully him. Brandon’s childhood was not an easy one either, although it was not an excuse for him shooting Larry. Brandon’s parent constantly fought, mother may have been abused by Brandon’s father, mother was using meth, and Brandon spent a lot of his time on his own. These problems are certainly a concoction for raising a troubled young individual.
Larry’s problems were more than just the bullying he received. Larry was trying to avoid feeling like a victim so his mechanism of defense was by somewhat harassing other boys, especially the ones that made fun of him. Brandon was a victim to this sadly. When you’re a teenager all you want to do is be accepted amongst your peers. You certainly do not

Murder On The Orient Express: And Then There Were No

...I believe that Murder on the Orient Express would be a valid option for future seventh grades. I actually prefer this book over And Then There Were None. I am inclined to say that even though ATTWN is and easier, the complex vocabulary and superior story make it a much more interesting, if more difficult, read. Murder on the Orient Express is a book with a vocabulary far above and beyond that of ATTWN. There are many different sections in the book that are in French, and just generally a far more advanced word choice. In my opinion, I think that this book was more geared towards people with a reading level around 7-8th grade, but because of the way that the now-sixth graders would read it, it would be much easier because Mrs. White, whom...

Capital Punishment

...Kevin Reasoner Professor Kraskin English 1101 December 8th, 2012 Capital Punishment Capital punishment is a debate our politicians argue each year with. Many people are for it and many are against it. Our very own Supreme Court still debate on this topic. If properly used right, capital punishment is good for society because it is a deterrence against future crimes and protect the rights of victims of malicious murders, capital punishment is a legal and an appropriate measure in the United States legal system. Capital punishment was reestablished in 1976 by the Supreme Court as an appropriate measure for murder cases. Since then, many murderers have been convicted and put to death for their awful crimes. With each execution of a murderer, society is a safer place. When a human makes the ultimate decision to commit a crime of murder, rape, child rape, and torture, would a life in prison term be fair. Prison's are for much less acts of crime and people who do the acts against fellow humans should be punished by capital punishment. Prisons and jails are used as a deterrent so that people in today’s' society will not perform an act against another human. If they do, they know the repercussions of the acts they are performing. Some people are clearly not mentally capable of knowing the difference between right and wrong and they are put into hospitals because of their sickness. The majority of society know the difference of right and wrong. Another form of a deterrent...

Jacqueline Montanez Case

...Jacqueline Montanez Case On May 12, 1992 Jacqueline Montanez, a member of the Maniac Latin Disciples, was involved with the murders of rival Latin King gang members Hector Reyes and Jimmy Cruz in Humboldt Park, Chicago. According to police Montanez shot Reyes and then later gave her gun to Marilyn Mulero: who subsequently shot Cruz. The three women involved were arrested within 24 hours of the crime. This story made headlines for a couple reasons; for one it involved retaliation against male gang members by female gang members and also because Montanez was only 15 when she committed the crime. Since the severity of her crime was extreme, Montanez was prosecuted in an adult court as opposed to a juvenile court. It only took the jury two days to determine probable cause. Video evidence along with testimony Montanez gave police was enough for the jury to make a decision On August 6, 1993 Montanez, then 17, was convicted of two first degree murder charges by a Cook County Court jury. Under the law of accountability Montanez was not only responsible for her actions but for Mulero’s actions as well, thus the two counts of first degree murder. Montanez was later sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Since Montanez was 15 when the murders took place the death penalty was out of the question. Despite the fact that she was tried as an adult the death penalty could not be applied due to the Supreme Court case of Thompson v. Oklahoma (1988): which prohibited...

Fiction Essay

...The plot of both of these stories keep the readers entertained and sitting on the edge of their seats. In the story Young Goodman Brown, a man takes a journey through the forest and appears to comes face to face with the devil himself. In this forest, he finds out that leaders in his church, his wife and even his father have become associated with the devil. He wakes up the next morning and was obviously changed by one event doubting the sincereity in everyone around him. It effected him for the rest of his life. It is hard to tell whether this was a dream or not, but it impacted him enough for him to think a certain way even into his old age. Young Goodman Brown always amazed me because the first time I read it was in 2001 during my 8th grade English class. Tomorrow is September 11th and will be eleven years since that tragic Tuesday morning. I know so many people who were changed by that day and were effected in the worst way. I know some people that turned away from God. I know some people that turned their back on the government. I even know some people who speak badly of our troops because that day reminds them of the time “our shields were not as strong as they should have been”. Now, this might be a blind or ignorant way of reacting to an event like this, but there is no doubt that the brain works in mysterious ways. Everytime I would hear a comment and think it was ignorant, I would then think about how much internal and psychological pain that person must be suffering...

Eth 125 Final Project

...white suburban students go in the other direction to the city’s “magnet” schools. Magnet schools are public schools with specialized courses. “Magnet” refers to how the schools draw students from across the normal boundaries defined by school zones that feed into certain schools. Within the city, 3500 children shuffle between black north St. Louis and the mainly white south side. Our program is the largest desegregation program in the country. The next example I thought of about race relating to my community was my local highways. Many years ago my community adopted a program called “Adopt A Highway”. It involves the community to keep areas of their assigned highway clean. I can remember in 8th grade cleaning up along a main road in my town that my school adopted just for the 8th graders. One day after I started driving, I was going down highway 55, and noticed they had dedicated a section of highway 55 to Rosa Parks. She is an important symbol of the modern Civil Rights Movement, and made a change in history. Well the Ku Klux Klan decided to adopt an area to clean and can you guess where they put them, on the section of highway that had been dedicated to Rosa Parks. I think that was a bitter sweet decision, and a very funny one at that....

Bullying: Ethical or Unethical

...Chapter 1: Introduction Background Information: Bullying has been an ongoing problem for many years, it can occur in the workplace, school, or online. Although this can happen anywhere, I will discuss bullying in the school and the measures being taking to prevent it. In Dake, Price, and Telljohann, they state that in the past three decades, school bullying gained increased attention in the United States due to media attention on homicide and suicide cases where bullying was a precipitating factor (Dake, Price, and Telljohann, 2003). The US Secret Service investigated characteristics of students involved in school shootings in the United States. During the Secret Service’s research, they found 37 different school shootings, two-thirds involved attackers who "felt persecuted, bullied, threatened, attacked, or injured by others prior to the incident". While two-thirds of the cases did not directly involve school bullying, "a number of the attackers had experienced bullying and harassment that was longstanding and severe. In those cases, the experience of bullying appeared to play a major role in motivating the attack at the school (US Secret Service, 2000)”. Ethics is another factor to consider when thinking about bullying and its effects on the victims. Burke and Richer break down behavior into two groups. Clearly wrong and conditionally wrong, of the two clearly wrong would be the proper fit for the topic that I am discussing. Clearly wrong includes behaviors which are so...

Happy Birthday to You

...BULLYING Tamaine Aries Leak Devry University Bullying is described as an aggressive behavior that inflicts harm on the physical and mental well-being of a victim that causes them to have feelings of fear and intimidation. As stated in Boulton et al (1992), “Researchers commonly define peer victimization or bullying as a negative act of aggression (or oppression) that is unprovoked and discriminately intended to cause harm, while carried out repeatedly over time and involves an actual and/or perceived imbalance of power and control in which the aggressor or group of aggressors are physically or psychologically more powerful than the victim” (Boulton & Underwood, 1992; Farrington, 1993; Olweus, 1999; Rigby, 1996; Smith &Thompson, 1991). Bullying has been known to occur from the minor range from one-on-one bullying to more aggressive methods of the bully incorporating random or volunteered partakers, who may or may not willing assist the primary bully with his or her bullying assaults. Bullying from my perspective, is a serious issue that needs to be handle in high consideration due to the increase reports of homicides and suicides that are have occurred based on the devious and abusive acts of bullying. As stated by Barbara, E.F. (2012), “Bullying or bullies from other observations of society can be overlooked as, “that’s just the way people are or “there’s nothing that can be done” (Barbara, 2012). But what truly bothers me about bullying the most, is that some...

Domestice Violence in the Lives of Black Women in the U.S.

...Vazaskia V. Crockrell-Caldwell Prof. Margaret Griesse T SOC 455: Sociology of Gender 8 December 2014 Domestic Violence in the Lives of Black Women in the U.S. This essay will explore the cause and impact of domestic violence in the lives of black women in the U.S. It will provide general information, such as the definition of domestic violence, statistics, and resources to help survivors leave domestic violence relationships. Following the review of the literature I identify areas which need further research. Since I can remember black women have been characterized as mean and argumentative, but also strong and self-sacrificing for their families. Black families on TV were always portrayed as single mother households. In my community there was also a reoccurring reality of domestic violence against women. This was is in direct contrast to stereotypes I heard about white women, who were portrayed as weak, frail and needing to be protected. Examples include June Cleaver on Leave it to Beaver and the Brady Bunch. But what justified the brutality of domestic violence against black women then and now? In 2011, black females were murdered at a rate more than two and a half times higher than white females: 2.61 per 100,000 versus 0.99 per 100,000. [1] In the U.S. domestic violence against black women has escalated. In 2010, Marissa Alexander an African American woman shot a warning shot at the wall in order to scare Rico Gray, her estranged, abusive...

Violent Games

...Violent Games: Single Benefit-Double Harm By Dan Nguyen Rhetoric Research Prof. Melody Heide 15 April 2013 One day, I visited a far relative; and when I came into the house, I was startled by the shouts of her kids, “Kill him,” “Die,” “Screw you!” Those kids were playing video games, and they were screaming bad words to each other’s face. I looked up to the screen and saw an extremely gory image of a violent game. I could tell the excitement on the kids’ faces, and when I greeted them, they did not even reply to me. That incident made me think about all the articles of how violent games affect children. Whereas school violence becomes more and more serious, violent games without close control from the government and families is one of the main reasons. Just because of a small contradiction, students can go straight to a fight, acting like some gangsters, and in the worst case, deathly accidents happen. Do violent games lead to violent behaviors? Do they have bad effects on children and society? Many people nowadays would reject those questions and provide various reasons to prove that violent games are good in general. If we take a look on both sides of the problem, video games are great products of entertainment technology that can bring some good effects, but in most of the cases, the bad effects infringe the good effects, especially for violent games, and that’s why we should limit children playing those by banning violent games for all minors in all states. ...

Active Shooter

...Active School Shooter Introduction The intention of this paper is to look at and present some issues and strategies that members of a school community think about when trying to create safer schools. Particularly when addressing an active shooter in a school setting. A major issue to consider when trying to keep all schools safe, is the simple fact that no two schools are the same. Understanding this can lead us to the conclusion that it is impossible to have one global plan or program that can be 100% effective in all schools. “Violence prevention programs work best when they incorporate multiple strategies and address the full range of possible acts of violence in schools. For any set of policies to work, it must be established and implemented with the full participation and support of school board members, administrators, parents, students, community members, emergency response personnel, and law enforcement.” (Kramen, 2008.) If these responsibilities were not shared, the success rate for safe school policies would be very low. Parents send their children to school and think that during that time they are studying and doing other productive, educational things. The last thing parents expect is something terrible happening to their child while at school. School violence is happening more frequently than it should and something needs to be done to stop it. Not only does an act of school violence, especially a school shooting, affect the individual student it reflects poorly...
