Franz Joseph Haydn
Franz Joseph Haydn was born on March 31, 1732 in Rohrau, Austria (Green, 2013). He did not come from a strong musical background; his family did not have any music professionals in it. However, his father was an amateur musician, his main profession was the village wheelwright. At an early age, Joseph had a wonderful voice. When he was eight he was sent to Vienna to become a choirboy at St. Stephen’s Cathedral. When he left the choir he made money by playing and teaching the violin as a freelance musician.
Haydn would then go onto become an assistant for composer Nicola Porpora. Then in 1761 he was appointed Kapellmeister at the Esterhazy family palace, he would hold this position for the next 30 years (biography.com, 2013). The position of Kapellmeister consisted of managing and writing music for the prince’s chapel, but in addition to his private opera house, marionette theater, and palace chamber music. Haydn composed a total of 104 symphonies, more than 20 operas, 83 string quartets, in addition to several divertimentos, trios, and sonatas..
During his time with the Esterhazy family, Haydn’s popularity continued to grow outside the palace walls. He would come to write as much music for publication as he was for the royal family. Some of his most successful works that were commissioned abroad included the Paris symphonies and “The Seven Last Words of Christ”. In 1791, a new Esterhazy prince allowed Haydn to leave the palace. Haydn would then move to England to conduct more symphonies. During his stay in England he composed some of his best works. Some of those works’ included “Rider” and the London symphonies.
In his later years, he would create his final masterpieces, which consisted of “powerful choral

...Unity and Variety 1 The Concepts of Unity and Variety Let's begin by listening to two fundamental concepts that make a piece of music "work"—the concepts of unity and variety. Most people like hearing sounds that they find pleasing, memorable, and familiar. Within a given composition, the feeling of familiarity—fostered by, among other things, reiterations of a music idea—lends a sense of unity to the music. Whereas unity satisfies the human need for sameness and familiarity, variety sustains our interest and appeals to our need for, and enjoyment of, the new, different, and unexpected. To illustrate the relevance of these concepts, listen to how they are used in a piece of music by George Frideric Handel, a very famous musician who lived between the 17th and 18th centuries and whose music remains popular to this day. George Frideric Handel See Here the Conqu'ring Hero Comes George Frideric Handel Born: 1685 Died: 1759 Period: Baroque (1600-1750) Country: Germany/England See Here the Conqu'ring Hero Comes is one of Handel's most popular pieces. Three minutes and three seconds (3:03) long, it is a movement within a longer composition entitled Judas Maccabaeus written for an ensemble (group) of musicians. If you think of Judas Maccabaeus as a book, then See Here the Conq'ring Hero Comes acts as a chapter in that book. A movement may be enjoyed by itself; however, like a chapter in a book, it also fits into the structure of a larger composition. While you listen...

...Music Appreciation Essay MUSC 1030 Professor J. Mann Most people when they look at me automatically assume “oh that girl is all hardcore”. This is not always the case for me. I am very eclectic in my taste for music, and I feel I have a very good grasp on the various types of music in which I can appreciate just about anything thrown at me to listen to regardless of the genre. I appreciate where music has come from, all the way to where it is for today’s music. Because my daughter is more into the anthem rock music of this era, I took her to a concert at Freedom Hill Amphitheatre on Friday October 4th, 2013. The festival was called Chill on the Hill and it featured the following bands: The Wonder Years, All Time Low, Pierce the Veil, and A Day to Remember. The Wonder Years was the first band to hit the stage and get the crowd amp’d up and going. They are a punk rock band from Philadelphia, PA and first arrived on the music scene in 2005. They are a mash up of a couple bands that have since dismembered which created the Wonder Years. I really found nothing too unique about the Wonder Years music, as it seemed to contain the same timbre as any other punk band out there. The tempo was always upbeat in their performance, and I don’t recall them having any ballads to slow the tempo down. It was a very gritty performance as far as their chord assembly is concerned. They did not really have a theme based in their music, but it was a very dynamic performance that used cadence to...

...Wallace did not have very good diction. The words he sang seemed to have country slang although it is German. Overall, Dr. Jones did a very good job at preparing his students to perform in front of a large crowd of people and I was impressed. One song I noticed that I did not like the most was “Come to my Garden,” from the musical, Secret Garden by Lucy Simon. Sydney Hough, soprano, and Katherine Brown, mezzo-soprano, sang this as a duet. This musical was on Broadway in 1991, making it one of the more contemporary musicals. I believe the more recent the musical the easier it is in some aspects because as music has progressed since Mozart and Beethoven, it lost the classical touch old music had – it loses the need for technique. . Sydney Hough began singing first, and was followed by Katherine. Sydney’s performance was very good; she seemed to be in sync with the music. Her tone was dark, and in her lower range was sometimes too airy. Katherine’s singing, I thought, was not good. Her diction was poor and her intonation with Sydney was poor. They harmonized towards the end of the song, and maybe out of nervousness or lack of practice, Katherine became flat and out of tune. I really did not hear much change dynamically, pulling away from the performance. Compared to the duet last on the program, this piece sounded very unprepared and mediocre. My favorite piece of the evening was “The Flower Duet,” from Lakmé sang by two sopranos, Jennifer Pagano and Shana Mayerand. The...

Why Value Life

...Why value life? Life is full of happiness, joy, peace, glory and love. It is the greatest gift one can receive from God. We live not only for ourselves but also for others, specially our families and loved ones. Life is full of happiness as well as sorrow, problems as well as solutions, kindness as well as selfishness, but that’s what makes life challenging. As the quotation says, “Live life to the fullest.” We must enjoy every day, every minute and every second of our existence. We cannot bring back the time that has been gone, but we can enjoy what we have now. Valuing life is like valuing yourself. If you value yourself you also value others. We didn’t beg nor ask for it, but God gave it to us, our life, our family, and our friends. And one way of saying thanks to Him is by loving, protecting and most of all, the contentment that we know someone loves us. In that way, we appreciate and love what God has created and given us. No one has the right to neither take away someone’s life nor kill themselves. It is not right to kill people, for everyone has their freedom to live and enjoy life, and no one must commit suicide just because of problems they cannot handle. It only depends on us, on how we look into things and find the solutions ourselves. Valuing our life and other’s life is the only thing we can present to God when we reach the altar of heaven; it is a proof that we appreciated and love the life, the experience and joy that has been lent to us while we are...

Social Exchange Theory/Friendship

...Unfaithfulness “Every person, all the events of your life are there because you have drawn them there. What you choose to do with them is up to you.”-Richard Bach. We meet many people and start different kinds of relationships during our lives. What is the reason not all of them last? All relationships have give and take although the balance of this exchange is not always equal. When we feel that we give more than we receive that is when we decide to end it. My friendly relationships had a nice start and lasted for a few years but had to end eventually because undesirable and negative aspects outweighed positive ones. I knew this girl for quite some time but we were never friends. It was our mutual friend ‘s party when we were officially introduced to each other. I felt connected to her from the very beginning. Since that day we started spending a lot of time together. We were on the same page almost about any discussion and if we would disagree on a subject one of us always knew when to step back so it doesn’t lead into a fight. I shared all my secrets with her. I felt emotional disclosure with her. Any time of the day I could call her and she was always ready to listen and give her advice of her thoughts. I was very happy to have a friend like that, because it is hard to find one that you feel comfortable telling everything about yourself including secrets. I felt like I was lucky to have a friend that understood me and was always there for me. One of the costs...

Thomas Paine

...Prompt: According to Thomas Paine, “That which we obtain too easily, we esteem too lightly. It is dearness only which gives everything its value.” Early in my life, I was taught to work for what I have and to have what I work for. I was taught if I did not earn what I have that it would be less appreciated in the end. My grandfather taught me early that a chore completed would be worth its weight in wages beyond a monetary value. I learned early that I should appreciate what God blesses me with and that I should earn those blessings. If I should sit by and the blessings keep mounting up without any effort on my behalf would I appreciate them at their worth? This was one of my most valuable learning’s in life. There are several television shows I sometimes stop to watch when I am scanning the channels for something of interest. These shows paint the pictures of what I consider to be wealth that was obtained easily and esteemed too lightly. We see in some of these episodes where individuals and couples squander through millions of dollars in short periods of times. They find themselves bankrupt and in more turmoil than when they did not have the extravagant means upon winning a lottery. If these individuals had worked hard for their money it would have meant more to them. Earning their means could have prevented them from squandering through millions of dollars. I know a young man who lost his parent tragically when he was ten years old. He inherited a very large...
