Music For My Soul Being from a family of many musicians and singers, music is a huge part of my life. It’s much more than a melody in my ear. It’s the movement of my body, ease of my mind, and thoughts I can only express through sweet, therapeutic sounds. Music is that “feeling” I get when I hear it. Through my childhood to adulthood, it still lives in me. Various genres of music have played important roles in my life. Rhythm & Blues (R&B), Rap/Hip Hop, Neo Soul, and Gospel have all conveyed emotions within me. Journey with me as I take a look back over my life and reminisce on how important music has been for my soul. As a child, I remember sitting in my room with my radio blasted! I would sing and dance until I became completely exhausted. I was very familiar with Rap/Hip Hop, R&B, and Gospel music. These three genres of music captivated me in three different ways. The rhythm of Rap music made me dance until I would sweat. Can’t Touch This by M.C. Hammer was my all time favorite. M.C. Hammer started the song with “my, my, my, my music hits me so hard, makes me wanna say “Oh my Lord, thank you for blessing me with a mind to rhyme and two hyped feet” (Hammer, 1990, track 2). Those were the only words to the verse I knew for a long time. I must admit that words to Rap songs didn’t mean very much to me back then. I loved to dance so the beat was all I needed to put a smile on my face and dance as hard as my body would allow me too. The sweet melody of R&B music brought out a talent in me I didn’t know existed… singing. I would sing everyday after school for hours. R&B music helped me to free my mind and, actually, taught me “how to” sing. While swaying back and forth, head tilted to the side, and eyes tightly shut, I would listen to a beautiful tone and melody that sent me into a daze. One song in particular made forget about the world around me, Vision of Love by Mariah Carey. This is one of the first songs I learned the words too. The tone of Mariah’s voice was so raspy, powerful, and mind-blowing. The music played was simple, yet memorable. As the song would play and Mariah began to sing, “Treated me kind, sweet destiny” (Lawrence, 1990, track 15) I fell into my own world and nothing else mattered. This is one of the first songs I learned the words to and I realized that songs have meaning. This song was released around a time I began to experience love. I began to reminisce over what I thought was the love of my life. I laugh about it now but it felt so good back then. R&B music became an expression of love and an escape of reality for me. Gospel music made me feel like no other genre could begin too. Through this music, I learned experienced the love of God. I remember my first solo, I Feel Like Praising Him by Shirley Caesar. This was the first time I sang publicly. I was nervous but once I closed my eyes, I forgot about an audience and sang my heart out. The music was upbeat and allowed me to do the two things I love… sing and dance. I sang and rocked back and forth to rhythm of the beat. This song meant a lot to me because through it I realized the power of God. For the first time, I understood why older people would have such joy in church. As an adolescent, I still listened to R&B, Rap/Hip Hop, and Gospel music, but the music became even more meaningful in my life. I began to listen to Rap/Hip Hop and understand the message behind it. Brenda’s Got A Baby by 2 Pac. This is first song I learned to words too. The rhythm of the music was not as upbeat, and the words were clear and easy to understand. The verse started as, “Brenda’s got a baby, but Brenda’s barely got a brain” (Evans, 1997, track B2). It described a 15 years old girl having a baby, living in a bad neighborhood, and no education. It went ahead and explained how it affects the community and our society. I learned a huge lesson about teen pregnancy from the song. The more I listened to it, the more educated I became of this topic. I remember feeling bad for the young teen because she had no guidance from anyone. The music playing was mellow and allowed me to visualize myself in her shoes. I also listened to Rap music that allowed me to release any type of ill feelings I had towards someone. The beat would be hard and it allowed me to release anger and express my inner feelings that may never been able to express. R&B became much important to me because I related to this genre of much more. The messages in songs became my emotions conveyed through melody. I helped me deal with love and heartbreaks. This music helped me overcome fear and, at times, allowed me to drown in my own misery. Understanding by Xscape became one of favorite songs. The music touched me and allowed me to release emotions I would be feeling at that time. I listened to this song whether happy or sad because it freed my mind. Gospel music became much more important to me. I must say that this genre helped keep me from getting in trouble. It, actually, became a hobby for me because I would listen to the music and sing it so much. Fully Committed by Kingdom became huge part of my life. This music touched me is no other so has ever touched. I learned this song, sang it for many, and touched many lives though song. “My loves forever, Jesus you’re all that I need and I could never repay you for what you did just for me” (Kingdom, 1987, track 2) were words that helped change my life for the better. Every time the music played a feeling of peace came over my body and it stills happens today. I cry and I’m so grateful. As an adult, I am still very much into the other genres of music discussed earlier, but Neo Soul has become a huge part of my life. I listen to it more than I listen to any other genre of music most days. I find Neo Soul to be comforting, soothing, and calming. When I listen to the smooth melody of the music, I instantly fall into a stress free zone. The music takes me to a level of comfort that would fall right under Gospel music. Neo Soul is the type of music I love to write. I always write about events in my life so neo soul is how I release my emotions. Gospel music still comforts me and makes me happy even when I’m sad. It helps me to accept things I can’t change and love myself more. Both Neo Soul and Gospel have helped me deal with the loss of my husband as well as other losses in my life. Music is that “feeling” I get every time I hear it. It’s my joy, pain, love, and life. R&B, Rap/Hip Hop, Gospel, and Neo Soul are so important to me. Each genre has affected my life in so many different ways. I appreciate each one of them for the support each has given me throughout my lifetime. Music has always been food for my soul, and it feels me up every time I hear it. Music will always live within me!

Hip Hop History

...4PM Research Paper The genre of music called “Hip Hop,” originated back in the 1960’s with the help of a Jamaican native and Dj, named Kool Hurc aka, Clive Cambell. Since the evolution of hip hop, the style of music has become one of the main branches of an artistic culture that consists of b-boying (break dancing), graffiti, and MC-ing. All of which have tremendously influenced many aspiring artists, their physical images, the ever-changing sound of hip hop, and other elements that relate to the hip hop culture. A lot of people claim that hip hop and rap can only be about violence, aggression, sex, and money in order to sell or be popular. Another view on hip hop and rap is that it’s too violent, and inappropriate to audiences. That it’s not even music but just a bunch of crap, when in reality, it’s like poetry. The lyrics that artists write come from personal experiences, and perceptions of what they see in the world they live in. Hip hop and rap is more than just music. One of the primary sources I found is a review/article published in “The New York Times” called “The Uncluttered Hip-hop of De La Soul”, written by Peter Watrous, in which Watrous critiques the performance and the group De La Soul at a show. This review of Del La Soul is relevant to the history of hip hop course because it makes a point in which gives an argument for positive recognition of not only De La Soul, but other hip hop groups with similar style of music. These groups don’t write about sex,...

...“Impressions of Music” Interest: 1) To do a collection of Art which portrays the emotions and personalities I visualise when music, which is classified as positively influential and highly favoured, is listened to. 2) (The challenge)To Mirror these emotions and feelings exactly how they are experience using scenes/scenarios in compositions, also allowing the human body language to capture these feelings I get in Music. INTRODUCTION View point Art (and “works of Art”) is meant to be perceived and interpreted, by human organs of sense (eyes/ears). It is these senses that assist in the viewer’s interpretation/grasp of the meaning and content of an Artist’s work. Through my own experiences I agree on this point-of-view. I will like to transmit to my viewer(s) the emotions I received from Music, that have moved and or touched my soul, and my senses. The Musician and singer, through medium of Music, has connected with me but can also generate these same feelings in more than one way, creating a sociable feel as music is shared/interpreted. I should be able to create a very similar effect with my Collection of Art! It is impossible to imagine my life without Art. Art is: CREATION –(I can add brief description to this and for each topic below if needed.)        BEAUTY        PLAY        COMMUNICATION        INTUITION However, I am still investigating the definition of Art. Album Analysis Gavin Degraw

...Blackbird Studio in Nashville and the Hensen Recording Studios in Hollywood Released -> September 20, 2011 Record Label -> RCA records (http://www.rcarecords.com/artists) Retail price: CD €12,99 ITunes: €9,99 [Genre] The genre(s) of this album are Blue-eyed soul, pop rock, and rock. Blue-eyed soul -> R&B / Soul performed by white artists, this music has a really nice vibe. Pop rock -> Mix of a catchy pop style and guitar-based rock. [Target group] In my opinion, there is not one specific target group for this album, just like the other three albums of DeGraw. He has a voice that is attractive for a lot of people. Teenage girls and boys, 20-30 year olds, and even 50 year olds like his voice and music. His album is a mix of blue-eyed soul and pop rock, I think that that’s also a reason why it is attractive to more than one target group. His tour concert in Amsterdam was totally sold out, so that means that a lot of people are interested and a fan of his music. [Period] The album is released on September 20, 2011. In my opinion, the album is timeless, but that is because I really like his sound, but someone who likes heavy metal might think that it is not timeless. The genre of the album is blue-eyed soul and pop rock, which means that it is not limited to this specific time. For this album, He reached out to fellow songwriters that he had wanted to work with, Ryan Tedder (One Republic) and Andrew Frampton (The Script). DeGraw’s latest hit, “Not Over You,” is...

Train uses his lyrics to express true love and you should treasure what you love before its gone. This creates a mixed emotion set for the song. This song can trigger a different kind of memories. The band Train use a lot of figurative language in their lyrics. A good primary example is imagery and metaphors. The use of imagery helps better understood the song because you are basically putting yourself in their shoes. Imagery applied to major five senses sight, smell, touch, taste, and hearing. When listening to the song "Hey, Soul Sister" the audience can see the lyrics coming to life. Musi Music Mood

...melody met my ears the sound of it woebegone matching my mood of the moment. My fingers danced their life’s worth of emotion across the keys creating a word of my own invention. My eyes were closed I did not need to see to know which note came next nor which chord to use for a harmony. This song was my own a tale of my life. Composing is the only outlet I have ever needed in order to get thoughts and emotions off my chest. I take comfort in the art of written music that I have created. There is always a symphony in my head playing to fill the discomfort of silence and if I listen hard enough eventually everything has a song. Songs and music tell stories they start, have conflict, have a climax, and then have some sort of ending. Music has the power to change lives, bring people together, and express what words cannot. Personal Exploration

...requirements of a reality independent of it. Commitment expresses a belief that enables a person to entrust himself to the claims of reality upon him. Commitment always refers the self away to what is independent of it; hence commitment is objectively, not subjectively, oriented Thus begins my personal exploration of knowledge. Invitation to a Concert Rhythm and Blues (R&B) is a gutsy music genre, so when Marie extended an invitation to attend an Anthony Hamilton concert, I accepted. At first, I was hesitant because I was not familiar with the artist. The empirical knowledge thought process pervaded my mind before I accepted the invitation. Unfamiliar with his music, it was difficult to justify attending. Moser and vander Nat (Moser & Vander Nat, 2002) defines empiricism as “Empirical (a posteriori) knowledge which depends on its evidence or justification on sensory experience.” Since I did not have any experience with Hamilton’s the music, the motivating factor was a nice cultural outing with a friend. Marie, whom I consider a master of understanding R&B, informed me that Hamilton is an outstanding performer of Neo-Soul, which is a derivative of R&B. Since I am a Neo-Soul novice but generally fond of R&B, accepting the invitation seemed like a fun and sociable outing. ...your musical, professional or scholarly goals for the future (250 words) 1. Music and performing have always been a part of my life, commencing dancing at the age of 3. Around the age of 8, I was encouraged by a dance teacher to take up the drama and singing class and it was around that time that I fell in love with singing. I started taking private singing classes immediately and a few months later started participating in eisteddfods and other competitions. By the age of 10, I started taking lessons with a new teacher, who taught me classical technique and would always show me how and why we did things a certain way to ensure I could apply all the technique to any song I will ever sing and that is what set my singing apart. My love for music, singing and performing grew when I had the chance to attend the McDonald College of Performing Arts from grade 7 through to 12, excelling, even though my music theory background was almost nil compared to all my friends who had studied piano and music theory from young ages. I studied music for 2 hours per day, 5 days a week. Being a music vocal student, these lessons consisted of jazz vocal choir, music composition, music theory, contemporary music choir and madrigal choir. Being a soloist, through these classes I learnt the importance of blending within a group, ear training, how to compose music and also had the chance to sing various styles of music, having to perform the entire score of Carmina Burana by Carl Orff being an example...

I listen to slow R & b songs or slow jazz music. One of my favourites is Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s get it on” . Aesthetic Enjoyment I also listen to music for aesthetic enjoyment. I listen to such music like jazz, blues and reggae songs that I find beautiful whether, I am exercising in the gym, driving in my car, working or even when I am at home. One of my favourites is Pharell Williams’s “Happy” and Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes’s “Wake up everybody” . This songs gets me going, they are truly beautiful songs. Philosophy of Music

...Intro to Music Education Philosophy of Music Education My Philosophy of Music Education Music is more than just notes on a page, pitches, and rhythms. Its more than just learning how to play an instrument or learning to sing well. Its an emotional learning experience, where not only are you physically involved, but you are emotionally involved to the point where your soul is touched. Music can express things in a way that words are inadequate of accomplishing. Music is a universal language of beauty. It brings people together, promises hope, peace and joy, and heals even the deepest of wounds. To me, music is something that speaks to me and impacts my life in very powerful ways and I want to pass that passion and love for music along to many, many students someday. I believe that children can learn so much from music. Their capability at a young age to be very passionate about a certain subject is wonderful and therefore must be capitalized on. They bring so much energy and passion that to shy away from giving them the opportunity to learn and develop through music would be a waste of all that energy and potential passion. With children, getting them involved earlier on in their lives can be very effective. There are some who can pick up that same passion and energy later on in their lives, but when started early in music, there is time to develop. They develop in skill and also in their appreciation for the beauty of what music really is. This combination of perspectives...

American Beauty: Lady Soul By Aretha Franklin

...Franklin’s genre of music ranged from R&B to pop to gospel to soul music to jazz. Her influences were Mahalia Jackson, Clara Ward, James Cleveland, Dinah Washington, and Sam Cooke. This album is artistically successful because her music came from the soul and it reached out to her listener. "A Natural Woman," "Chain Of Fools," and so many other songs helped shape the music of a generation. Her music is appropriate in the church setting. It makes you want to get up and dances, however, her lyrics still have deep meanings to them. Some distinguished characteristics about Franklin are her talent with the piano and her powerful yet moving voice. Some interesting facts about this amazing artist are that she taught herself how to play the piano, without knowing how to read music. She now has 44 Grammy nominations and 18 wins, ten of those wins are for Best R&B Vocal Performance. She also has a four-octave vocal range. Vocal range is the measure of the breadth of pitches that a human voice can phonate. Such a range is so unusual because the human voice is very limited and we use only a small part of it. This makes it very difficult to expand the vocal range and articulate such high notes. That is why in my opinion she is a very talented artist. The song “Chain of fools” is about a woman who realizes she is one of many girls in her boyfriend's "Chain." Even...
