Reflective Essay

...Quintae Dorsey July 24th, 2013 English 101 Joshua Thusat Reflection Essay When I enrolled into my English 101 class I thought passing the class would be very easy. Previously, I had taken an English 101 class at my old University and received an “A”, so I was highly confident that I would excel in all of my assignments without concerns; I was very mistaken. Every essay that I have done, (except learning logs) I had to re-do because of flaws in my writing. I didn’t believe I had any flaws in my writing when first starting the course, which made me oblivious to my errors. I am so relieved that I didn’t proceed to English 102 without taking this course. Enrolling in this class has helped me grow as a writer. By understanding my strong areas and what areas I need to work on, I feel more confident writing my essays. Not only did I grow as a writer, I really enjoyed the environment of the classroom. I always felt positive energy from not only my teacher, but my peers as well. It made my learning experience enjoyable yet very informal. I absolutely loved that the classroom is very diverse; full of people from various countries with different outlooks on life. I appreciated hearing everyone’s opinions about certain topics, and the respect everyone showed one another when speaking about sensitive subjects such as racism. Having a respectable teacher and classmates really made the tone of our class worth being a part of. At my previous university I had classes with at least two hundred...

Alma College Student Analysis

...My first year at Alma College has been an eye-opening experience. I have learned a lot academically, about myself, and about life in general. As I progressed though the year my viewpoints had changed. I had many new experiences that broadened my horizon. My classes opened me up to knowledge I could apply to my life, that I found interesting, and benefitted me. I learned a lot about myself, including what I want out of my college experience, and what my passion is. Despite the numerous papers, multitudes of exams, tremendous amount of course work, and athletics I believe I have done well. One of the many demanding classes this semester was English 101. In this rigorous course, students were asked to gain rhetorical knowledge, engage in critical writing, perform research writing, and improve their style and grammar. These goals are closely related to those of the WPA Outcomes published by the Council of Writing Program Administrators. The WPA...

ENG 101 Class Analysis

...Before I took the class ENG 101, I struggled so much with writing. From sending simple emails to people, to sending texts to my children, I had always had a hard time collecting my thoughts and writing them down. I did not think I learned very much from this class, yet I was expecting it to be very difficult for me. Because of my origin, my native language is not English. When I speak, my thoughts usually come to me in Amharic, my native language. It used to be so challenging for me to speak English because I would mix up the two languages, but because of all the writing exercises and assignments, we’d had to do this semester, I don’t struggle with that anymore. ENG 101 completely changed the way I see the English language and writing. The first class I took at Shelton State was Basic English. Taking that class significantly improved the way I spoke English, but it did not do a lot to help my writing skills. This semester I signed up for ENG 101 hoping to improve my reading and writing skills. When I started the class, my expectations were pretty high. I wanted all A’s and to be a great writer, but most of...

...Lauren Klubertanz Lauren’s English 101 Portfolio ENG101 15 July 2016 Table of Contents Cover Letter p. 3-4 Self- Assessment Essay p. 5-10 College Learning Essay p. 11-17 Analyzing Arguments Essay p. 18-23 Cover Letter This midterm portfolio shows how I have progressed has a college reader and writer. Before this class I had trouble even understanding how to write a thesis and now I think I can definitely write a college level thesis. I have progressed to know how to incorporate my evidence into my concise and focused thesis statement. For example in the self assessment essay my thesis was, “Due to transferring to many schools over my first two years of college, I feel like I have had the opportunity to build up many habits of mind from Framework for Success in Post-Secondary Writing, especially in flexibility, openness and persistence but still can develop in metacognition and creativity in order to become a more successful college writer.” This showed that I could adapt a thesis to the assignment and it was focused and used my sources. At this point in the semester, a strength I have is the ability to connect source evidence with my thesis. I am able to develop my focused thesis around source-based evidence. For example in the college learning essay I was able to use my interview with my friend who was an elementary teacher to help develop my thesis about how teaching has changed due...

My Progress in Writing

...Prof. Nelson English 49 09 May 2012 As a non-native speaker who immigrated to the U.S. two years ago, English is a big obstacle for me in communication. I have had many difficult times speaking and understanding English when talking to others. Writing an essay was almost impossible for me to think of. Realizing how difficult it was to experience these linguistic difficulties, I then decided to go back to school to improve my English skills. Therefore, English became especially essential for me to succeed in my educational goals. I was determined to earn an Associate’s degree then transfer to a university for a Bachelor’s degree. I started going to ESL classes and studied English very hard to make progress in my speaking, reading and writing skills. After spending one year in ESL classes, I qualified for English 43. I learned lots of grammar and how to write paragraphs efficiently during these classes. I noticed that writing an essay was more challenging when I got into English 49. However, since then I’ve learned how to write a five-paragraph argumentative essay which was one of my weaknesses in academic writings. I have made a lot of progress in writing skills since I started studying English 49. I now think that I’m ready to go on to English 101 due to the fact that I have learned useful strategies to follow a writing process and develop coherent paragraphs effectively. A writing process is the most important step that I learned in this class. First of all, before...

Becoming a Veterinarian

...Devyn R. Fowler Oct. 01, 2014 ENG 101 Becoming a Veterinarian Animals have been a major part of my life for as long as I could remember. Even as a baby, I was surrounded by all types of animals; dogs, cats, lizards, birds. Etc. The passion I have for animals inspired me to me to want to become a veterinarian. A veterinarian “is a person who is trained to give medical care and treatment to animals: an animal doctor” (Merriam-Webster). I can find no better career path for me then helping animals that are injured/in need of medical attention. If you weren’t aware, there are five main veterinarian jobs; livestock, companion, exotic, mixed, and lab animals. My interest lies only between two of the five jobs: livestock and companion. Knowing the differences and similarities between the two will help me better understand these jobs and also help me make a final decision on which specific career path to study. Livestock veterinarians specialize in exactly that, livestock animals (cows, horses, etc.). “Livestock veterinarians examine, diagnose, and treat individual livestock animals/herds” (DegreeDictionary.org). Another aspect would be treating animals that will be used for food. With that being said, a livestock veterinarian must “enforce food safety standards, check for transmittable diseases and quarantine animals as necessary” (DegreeDictionary.org). “Other duties include giving vaccinations and handing out medication...

Initial Reflection Eng 202

...Christopher Munson Professor Nick Beishline English 202 1 September 2014 As a college student, I walk into classes striving to gain the most possible out of each and every one of my classes. This is simply a subconscious duty that I believe most college students have. However, as we know, there are some students that walk into class on the first day trying to figure out what the least possible amount of work in their course can be, and still be able to slide by with a passing grade. My question to this is—why? As a student we all should be committed to doing the best that we possibly can. This is about the only negative feeling that I have when in any class on a regular basis. I believe that I need to improve in all areas of my writing, there is always room for improvement. Improvement in sentence structure specifically would be something I need to work on. Additionally, I am excited to learn how to write research papers by the end of the semester. This is something that I have not done since the eighth grade, and I do not remember much about it. In my past college English classes, 101 and 121, we mostly participated in short readings and then a paper to follow the reading. This was very annoying, doing the same thing every class. However, I did enjoy the discussion portions of these classes; seeing the viewpoints from many different people was very thought provoking at times. I had the same professor for both of these classes, she was excellent and fun...

English 101 Reflection

...I took my time reviewing the feedback provided on my first submitted essay for English 101. I noticed several positive areas in my writing. The first area is having the ability to provide readers with good, well placed examples throughout the essay. The second area of strength is grammar. This is an area that can use improvement however, it is at an advancing level. The best part about receiving feedback is being given a chance to learn from a mistake. A few areas I learned I need to focus on improving would be to state a clear and concise thesis statement letting my readers know exactly what my main point is and what to expect in my paper. I also need to avoid using a passive voice. By writing in a passive voice my essay was wordy and at times...

Expectations for College

...I expect for my college experience to be different than what my high school experience was. It is a clean slate, I am able to explore my interests. And it isn’t all about being the social butterfly. For me being on campus means meeting college-level expectations and doing well in my classes. It means being more independent when it comes to asking for help and it means being responsible for keeping up with your schoolwork and preparing for tests which I did not do in high school. My grades are very important to me. I want to earn a 4.0 in college. I know it is hard but I know that I can do it. I am taking English 090 because I did not test into college level English therefore it will pretty much just be a refresher course. So I know that I can get an A in his class. I am taking AAA for allied health students. I know I will succeed in this class because I am very motivated to become a nurse. I want to learn all about my field if study. Also, I am in psychology 101 for an elective. I am sure I will be able to get a 4.0 in hat class because the brain and it functions are very interesting to me, and when something fascinates me I always excel. Grades are the measure of college success, like the salary at a job, so in order to get good grades I intend to do many things. I will take responsibility. College isn't like high school. There's no teacher or parent to remind you every day of what you need to do, so I will have to take charge. I will study. At college, you're expected to...

Karma's a Bitch

...A. Educational History When starting off college I knew exactly what my major would be, Special Education. My mom was a teacher and my boyfriend’s mom at the time was a teacher as well. I just knew moving in that direction I would have a support system. So I started my journey at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio. Wittenberg had captured my heart and I was ready to learn. After completing my first year at Wittenberg I decided to move back home to be closer to my family but also was having complications with depression. That time was really hard for me because I felt as if I was giving up on my dreams. But I took a vow to myself that I would not slack when it came to going to school in Saint Louis, Missouri. I enrolled into general education courses at a community college. While being at home I had time to think about where I would like to go that was closer to home that would give me the same five star education that Wittenberg University offered their students. So I sat out on a hunt to find the most amazing school. When looking up schools I started in Missouri because I knew that I wanted to at least be close to home. Missouri State was one of the first schools that popped up when scrolling through Missouri Schools. That week I came to campus to visit a few friends who had come here right after high school. After that week with my friends I as sold that Missouri State was the place for me. As I started classes at MSU I was still pursuing a major in Special Education...

Introductory Letter

...EGL 101-18 Terry Newingham September 2, 2014 Introductory Letter Dear Ms. Swafford, I would like to start by saying that I graduated from high school in 1987. So I am older than dirt. I wish I had paid more attention when I was in high school, but unfortunately I did not. I did not have anybody to push me to do better, or explain to me how all of this learning could affect me some day. So I only did as much as I had to do to graduate. So here almost 30 years later I’m struggling to put complete sentences together, let alone write a 5 page essay about something I completely know nothing about. This is sometimes very embarrassing, especially if I must compete or try to keep up with the young students. I’m not saying I can’t do this, because I can, it’s just not going to be easy for me. I’m going to have to work twice as hard as the young students do. But if you can help me and be patient with me along the way, I can accomplish what I have sat out to do. As I said before I drove a truck for 24 years and for health reasons they no longer will let me drive and as a truck driver there was not much need for proper grammar or English and nobody really cared if I could write an essay. So here I was at 44 years old and not a clue of what I’m going to do with the rest of my life and I still don’t know completely to this day, but I’m here and I’m trying to get an education. I want to get my degree in accounting. I would love to be able to be a CPA someday. I’m not sure that this...

Refelctive Baldwin Essay

...Sarah Travis ENGWR 101 Inst. Kronzer 13 Sept 2014 Reflective Essay Language has fatal consequences, from my own personal experience, when working in healthcare, speaking unprofessionally can cause me to be terminated, although it may be challenging to change the way you speak a language, you just have to deal with what the employer wants from you or you will lose your job. According to James Baldwin, language “is the most vivid and crucial key to identity: It reveals the private identity, and connects one with, or divorces one from, the larger, public, or communal identity. There have been, and are, times and places, when to speak a certain language could be dangerous, even fatal” (650). Baldwin explains that there is a time and place that certain language should be speaking because language has fatal consequences. I agree with Baldwin, there is a time and place for everything. I also agree that language can be dangerous, even fatal. In James Baldwin’s essay, “If Black English Isn’t a Language, Then Tell Me, What Is?” Baldwin confronts the topic of “Black Language.” Baldwin states, “Language incontestably, reveals the speaker” (Baldwin, 648). The language one speaks can say a lot about a person. People may speak the same language, but it is always going to be different based off where the speaker comes from, what type of person the speaker is, what the speaker does as their career, and what the speaker has experienced in their life. Baldwin states that his argument has...

...Grant Harrison Professor Johnson English 101 (250) September 3, 2013 Narrative College Journey College, although a challenging stage for most people, is a necessary part of life to discover who they really are intellectually and socially, but also to have the opportunity at the career of their choice. However, picking the field to which I would like to study has been a difficult task and has been varied many times. Aside from all the fun, college can be very discouraging and difficult due to the challenges in the classroom and the socially awkward situations we are all faced with, but in the end, the need for a college degree is crucial. Being an eighteen-year-old college student, and knowing I want to earn a degree in business is a scary thought. The goals, in which I wish to achieve through attending college, are those of self-sustainability, intellect, and an all around better knowledge of myself. I will achieve these goals by working hard in the classroom, and placing myself in unfamiliar situations to gain character and knowledge, which will help me in the future. Once these goals are attained, I plan on becoming some type of financial adviser. I feel that these goals will help me to be an understanding and knowledgeable man who will do anything to reach the satisfaction of the customer. However, the choice to pursue a degree in business has not always been in the cards. I feel that the influence my father has had on me through his concepts of smart buying...
