Previously, I had taken an English 101 class at my old University and received an “A”, so I was highly confident that I would excel in all of my assignments without concerns; I was very mistaken. Every essay that I have done, (except learning logs) I had to re-do because of flaws in my writing. I didn’t believe I had any flaws in my writing when first starting the course, which made me oblivious to my errors. I am so relieved that I didn’t proceed to English 102 without taking this course. Enrolling in this class has helped me grow as a writer. By understanding my strong areas and what areas I need to work on, I feel more confident writing my essays. Not only did I grow as a writer, I really enjoyed the environment of the classroom. I always felt positive energy from not only my teacher, but my peers as well. It made my learning experience enjoyable yet very informal. I absolutely loved that the classroom is very diverse; full of people from various countries with different outlooks on life. I appreciated hearing everyone’s opinions about certain topics, and the respect everyone showed one another when speaking about sensitive subjects such as racism. From sending simple emails to people, to sending texts to my children, I had always had a hard time collecting my thoughts and writing them down. I have had many difficult times speaking and understanding English when talking to others. Writing an essay was almost impossible for me to think of. Realizing how difficult it was to experience these linguistic difficulties, I then decided to go back to school to improve my English skills. Therefore, English became especially essential for me to succeed in my educational goals. I was determined to earn an Associate’s degree then transfer to a university for a Bachelor’s degree. I started going to ESL classes and studied English very hard to make progress in my speaking, reading and writing skills. After spending one year in ESL classes, I qualified for English 43. Even as a baby, I was surrounded by all types of animals; dogs, cats, lizards, birds. Etc. The passion I have for animals inspired me to me to want to become a veterinarian. A veterinarian “is a person who is trained to give medical care and treatment to animals: an animal doctor” (Merriam-Webster). I can find no better career path for me then helping animals that are injured/in need of medical attention. If you weren’t aware, there are five main veterinarian jobs; livestock, companion, exotic, mixed, and lab animals. My interest lies only between two of the five jobs: livestock and companion. Knowing the differences and similarities between the two will help me better understand these jobs and also help me make a final decision on which specific career path to study. This is simply a subconscious duty that I believe most college students have. However, as we know, there are some students that walk into class on the first day trying to figure out what the least possible amount of work in their course can be, and still be able to slide by with a passing grade. My question to this is—why? As a student we all should be committed to doing the best that we possibly can. This is about the only negative feeling that I have when in any class on a regular basis. I believe that I need to improve in all areas of my writing, there is always room for improvement. Improvement in sentence structure specifically would be something I need to work on. Additionally, I am excited to learn how to write research papers by the end of the semester. This is something that I have not done since the eighth grade, and I do not remember much about it. The first area is having the ability to provide readers with good, well placed examples throughout the essay. The second area of strength is grammar. I wish I had paid more attention when I was in high school, but unfortunately I did not. I did not have anybody to push me to do better, or explain to me how all of this learning could affect me some day. So I only did as much as I had to do to graduate. So here almost 30 years later I’m struggling to put complete sentences together, let alone write a 5 page essay about something I completely know nothing about. This is sometimes very embarrassing, especially if I must compete or try to keep up with the young students. I’m not saying I can’t do this, because I can, it’s just not going to be easy for me.
