About 10 years ago I started to coach kids and adults to sing and express themselves through music, as I realised music has the power to change your mood from negative to positive and really aid in the healing of the mind, body and spirit. So I continued to coach and began gaining lots of new students. Each year we would gather everyone, all ages and cultures together and put on a concert for the local community, often raising funds for people in need. ...Uncovering Mahler, Schoenberg & Debussy In this essay I will talk about three composers who individually had their own take on music and have significantly aided the progression of music composition in the twentieth-century. These three composers are Gustav Mahler, Arnold Schoenberg and Claude Debussy. I will assess their compositional styles by investigating in to some of the structures they used and the meaning and thinking behind their movements and symphonies. Gustav Mahler (July, 1860) was a late-Romantic composer and was a huge influence on modern music both with his music and his conducting. One piece of music that he is forever recognised by is his Song of the Earth (Das Lied von der Erde) composed in 1907-1908. This was first performed later on, unfortunately not conducted by Mahler himself as it was performed after his death. It was a huge piece of work written for two soloists, which was very rarely done, and an almighty orchestra. This would have been his ninth symphony but ‘Mahler refused to call it No.9 out of superstitions dread: Beethoven and Bruckner had got no further than nine, and he half seriously hoped to cheat death by stopping his numbering at eight’. (Cooke 1980, p.104) However others say this isn't the whole truth and that it wasn't named No.9 because this song meant a lot more to him. ...Individual Gardner Intelligence Paper When defining intelligence there are three different approaches that have been discovered, such as the psychometric approach, the information-processing approach, and the theory of multiple intelligences. (Kowalski & Weston, 2011) Howard Gardner developed his on theory of multiple intelligences. His unique theory looked at each person as being intelligent in their own way. His theory was developed on the question “how are you smart?” verses the standard question “how smart are you?” In his research Gardner discovered that there were actually multiple intelligences, he gives a list of eight different intelligences that he considers to make an individual intelligent. The eight different intelligences include linguistic, musical, logical-mathematical, naturalist, spatial, bodily-kinesthetic, intrapersonal, and interpersonal. “Gardner’s theory suggests that intelligence lies on not one but eight curves, one for each type of intelligence” (Kowalski & Weston, 2011). According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, for example, one in five of us will experience a mental illness in our lifetime (CMHA, 2014). Though this statistic is in part due to the stigma associated with mental health, there are various methods in which we can protect and promote our psychological wellbeing. More importantly, given that suffering is inevitable and arrives in innumerable guises (e.g. stress, depression, confusion), how can one become less disturbed by the unpleasant experiences in life? By introducing the concept, this paper will argue that mindfulness can be used to as a tool to achieve greater psychological well-being. Known as a deceptively simple but useful attention-regulating practice, mindfulness allows one to be less reactive to what is happening in the moment and accepting of all experiences—be it positive, negative, or neutral (Germer, 2004). The museum was established in the year 1915 as a result of the Panama-California Exposition where several exhibits were displayed with ‘The Story of Man through Ages’ being the first. At the culmination of the exposition, San Diego Museum Association sought to retain the available collection and start a permanent museum. As a result, the collection was named Museum of Man in 1942 and later in 1978 as the California Museum of Man. Besides housing the history of the Kumeyaay people, who are the subject of this research paper, the history of other Native Americans from the South of California can also be studied in this place. The museum has a population of over 100000 ethnographic items, 25000 images, and a large library of books and journals.
