The Beatles. The ultimate band and one in which I have loved since I was a baby, thanks to my mom. She would always sing “And I Love Her” to me when I was scared or could not go to bed. My Babi (Polish for grandmother) and my Nonni (Italian for grandmother) would also sing me songs to sooth me to sleep, about butterflies and magical places. These are some musical events that I can remember from when I was little and that is where my musical journey began.

Music was never my best subject, especially when it came to playing musical instruments. I was better at singing, dance and drama. I did take music as a kindergartener, learning how to play simpler instruments and to sing songs, which I think I had an easy time with, but I cannot fully remember. I picked up the recorder easily, but when I got into older grades the one thing that still to this day that throws me off about music is the “salamander and penguin” thing that my music teacher would always say to me about music notes. I still do not get it and that frustrates me now because I could have been a fantastic flute player if they did not throw this curve ball at me in the first place! I always thought I could master an instrument, but the challenging part was finding …show more content…
My Nonni and Nonno (Italian for grandfather) would play classical and oldies music in the car when we went to different places in Windsor and I would sing along to the oldies if I new the lyrics. My parents introduced me to The Beatles, New Order, Elton John, ABBA and so many more bands and artists that I still appreciate today. I guess what I am trying to say is that yes, I had a difficult time learning and understanding music when I was in elementary, but my love for it is ever changing and will always be

About 10 years ago I started to coach kids and adults to sing and express themselves through music, as I realised music has the power to change your mood from negative to positive and really aid in the healing of the mind, body and spirit. So I continued to coach and began gaining lots of new students. Each year we would gather everyone, all ages and cultures together and put on a concert for the local community, often raising funds for people in need. This would be a great goal for each student to over come their fears and anxieties, putting emphasis on helping others. The concerts...

Early 20th Century Music

...Uncovering Mahler, Schoenberg & Debussy In this essay I will talk about three composers who individually had their own take on music and have significantly aided the progression of music composition in the twentieth-century. These three composers are Gustav Mahler, Arnold Schoenberg and Claude Debussy. I will assess their compositional styles by investigating in to some of the structures they used and the meaning and thinking behind their movements and symphonies. Gustav Mahler (July, 1860) was a late-Romantic composer and was a huge influence on modern music both with his music and his conducting. One piece of music that he is forever recognised by is his Song of the Earth (Das Lied von der Erde) composed in 1907-1908. This was first performed later on, unfortunately not conducted by Mahler himself as it was performed after his death. It was a huge piece of work written for two soloists, which was very rarely done, and an almighty orchestra. This would have been his ninth symphony but ‘Mahler refused to call it No.9 out of superstitions dread: Beethoven and Bruckner had got no further than nine, and he half seriously hoped to cheat death by stopping his numbering at eight’. (Cooke 1980, p.104) However others say this isn't the whole truth and that it wasn't named No.9 because this song meant a lot more to him. The song was separated into six separate movements, each of these became their own individual song. However it is the first movement - Drinking song of the Earths...

Individual Gardner Intelligence Paper

...Individual Gardner Intelligence Paper When defining intelligence there are three different approaches that have been discovered, such as the psychometric approach, the information-processing approach, and the theory of multiple intelligences. (Kowalski & Weston, 2011) Howard Gardner developed his on theory of multiple intelligences. His unique theory looked at each person as being intelligent in their own way. His theory was developed on the question “how are you smart?” verses the standard question “how smart are you?” In his research Gardner discovered that there were actually multiple intelligences, he gives a list of eight different intelligences that he considers to make an individual intelligent. The eight different intelligences include linguistic, musical, logical-mathematical, naturalist, spatial, bodily-kinesthetic, intrapersonal, and interpersonal. “Gardner’s theory suggests that intelligence lies on not one but eight curves, one for each type of intelligence” (Kowalski & Weston, 2011). There are three major intelligence that I feel have impacted my personal life the first would be Bodily-Kinesthetic, Intrapersonal, and Intrapersonal. Bodily-Kinesthetic When I began this journey of discovering my own intelligence I learned a great deal about myself. I found that I am 95 percent bodily kinesthetic. I was finally able to put a name to how I learn and it described my personality exactly. I struggled in school which was embarrassing but I knew the problem was that...

Psychology

... Tuesday, November 18, 2014 Introduction Despite the fact that the mind, body and spirit are interconnected, there is a tendency to forget about—or even neglect—our psychological well-being. According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, for example, one in five of us will experience a mental illness in our lifetime (CMHA, 2014). Though this statistic is in part due to the stigma associated with mental health, there are various methods in which we can protect and promote our psychological wellbeing. More importantly, given that suffering is inevitable and arrives in innumerable guises (e.g. stress, depression, confusion), how can one become less disturbed by the unpleasant experiences in life? By introducing the concept, this paper will argue that mindfulness can be used to as a tool to achieve greater psychological well-being. Known as a deceptively simple but useful attention-regulating practice, mindfulness allows one to be less reactive to what is happening in the moment and accepting of all experiences—be it positive, negative, or neutral (Germer, 2004). Defining Mindfulness What, exactly, is mindfulness? Although there has been a call in the literature to reconstruct aspects of current mindfulness models, including the establishment of a mutually agreed upon definition and application of the term (Germer 2004), mindfulness is best known for its Buddhist roots and translation of the Pali word sati, meaning awareness, attention and remembering (Brown and Ryan...

Blues Music Analysis

...However taking an array of shapes and experiencing numerous variations over the years, the blues shaped the foundation of rhythm and blues, jazz, and the rock-and-roll music. Africans, after been torn from their skin, suffering a cruel journey from their West African homes to the South of America on slave ships and enforced into a submissive mode of life, reserved a steadiness with their stance over a variety of conducts, counting music. Their voices slipped amongst the lines of the more unbending scale of European music to make a characteristic new sound. To the owners and supervisors of plantations the music appeared to be “falling and rising” and sounded...

The Kumeyaay People of California

...THE KUMEYAAY PEOPLE OF CALIFORNIA by Your Name (boldface) ANTH 100: Non-Western Cultures and the Western Tradition Instructor: Dr. Steven R. James Nov. 10, 2014 INTRODUCTION In my quest to study the life of the ancient California inhabitants, I visited the San Diego Museum of Man which is an anthropological museum situated in Balboa Park, San Diego, California. The museum was established in the year 1915 as a result of the Panama-California Exposition where several exhibits were displayed with ‘The Story of Man through Ages’ being the first. At the culmination of the exposition, San Diego Museum Association sought to retain the available collection and start a permanent museum. As a result, the collection was named Museum of Man in 1942 and later in 1978 as the California Museum of Man. Besides housing the history of the Kumeyaay people, who are the subject of this research paper, the history of other Native Americans from the South of California can also be studied in this place. The museum has a population of over 100000 ethnographic items, 25000 images, and a large library of books and journals. MUSEUM EXHIBIT 1) Artifact Display On the second floor of the museum, a wide variety of the historic sources can be found. Among the displayed artifacts there are models of the early man, reconstructions of the bones of hominids, cave paintings, coffins of mummies from ancient Egypt, stone carvings, and remains of the Egyptian mummy known as Lemon Grove. The culture of the people...

Enchanted Kingdom Case Study

...I. Title of the Case Enchanted Kingdom: The Magic Lives On and On II. Executive Summary of the Case Enchanted Kingdom (EK) is the pioneer theme park in the country, boasting seven fantastic theme zones, and imported rides and attractions. Ideally, new rides and attractions should be added annually to maintain the charm and sustain the viability of the theme park. However, due precarious economic conditions prevailing in late 1997 onward, the company deferred its expansion plans. It has been almost four years since it last introduced a new major ride or attraction for the theme park. Against the Asian currency crisis backdrop, management must identify strategies to eliminate seasonal demands and boost its guest attendance and profitability. III. Background of the Case Enchanted Kingdom opened to the public on October 19. 1995. It was and still is the Philippines' first world class fixed and themed amusement attraction on a scale never before seen in the country. It had 16 rides and attractions most of which were unique to the Philippines during its introduction while the rest were in size and capacities that had never experienced in the country before. Locating these rides and attractions within seven meticulously themed zones interspersed with food and merchandise outlets and kiosks as well as various game stands also added to the “experience” in a totally “enchanting” environment, away from the day-to-day realities of life. In 1996, answering the...

Modern Portfolio Theory (Mpt) and Financial Economics a Theory of Lesser Turf

...Andrey Artemenkov, The department of economic measurements, GYY artemenkov@rambler.ru Modern Portfolio theory (MPT) and Financial Economics: a theory of lesser turf?♣ “In this age, which believes that there is a short cut to everything, the greatest lesson to be learned is that the most difficult way is, in the long run the easiest.” Henry Miller “[These are colossal] disproportions that have accumulated over the last few years. This primarily concerns disproportions between the scale of financial operations and the fundamental value of assets, as well as those between the increased burden on international loans and the sources of their collateral. … In effect, our proposal implies that the audit, accounting and ratings system reform must be based on a reversion to the fundamental asset value concept. In other words, assessments of each individual business must be based on its ability to generate added value, rather than on subjective concepts. In our opinion, the economy of the future must become an economy of real values. How to achieve this is not so clear-cut. Let us think about it together.” From the Address of Vladimir Putin, Prime Minister of Russia, at the Davos Economic Forum (February, 2009) This Part analyzes the pre-analytical foundations and macro-economic impact of the Modern Portfolio Theory1 (MPT) tenets, on which much of the present Western investment theory and financial economics is erected. Our general inference is that while the former are tautological...
