Earning my college degree

My mom is more like a best friend than my mother. She is an inspiration to me when it comes to going back to school and exceeding my own expectations in life. My mom had gotten married when she was only 18 years old. My mom has a passion teaching children who are autistic and severely disabled. She takes time out of her busy day to spend time with me and take me out to different places to have a good time. She always knows what to say to me when I am not feeling good. My dad means the world to me. I don’t know what I would do without him in my life. My dad is the most generous person that I have ever met in my life. He will help anyone out with whatever they need. My dad is the associate pastor of our church and is a very active member in the community. He is on the board for feeding the poor in Philadelphia and takes time out of his very busy schedule to help someone in need. My dad is always there for me when I am struggling with stuff in my life. I am so very proud to call him my dad and have him in my life. I am the youngest of three children. I was born on January 27, 1984 on a snowy winter afternoon at 4:30 in the afternoon. I was a very sick baby when I was born that I needed to stay in the hospital for a very long time. I had pneumonia when I was first born so I had to sleep at 90 degree angle in an oxygen tent to help me breath. I have an older sister named Jessica and an older brother named TJ. My sister gave me my name because she was going around telling everyone that my mom was having a baby named Donna in her belly. She even named her dolls Donna so my mom decided to name me Donna. My mom couldn’t tell my sister who at the time was three years old that my name isn’t going to be Donna so that is how I got my name. I sometimes didn’t like being the baby in the family because my brother and sister would blame me for every little thing they did wrong. My favorite childhood memories are family summer vacations. My parents would take us to Ocean City, NJ for a week and we each would be allowed to bring one friend with us. We would stay at our friend’s shore house for the whole week. My family and I would spend the whole day on the beach and have lunch on the beach. Sometimes we would go out for dinner on the boardwalk or to a restaurant nearby. We would sometimes stay in the house for dinner and do food shopping so we can eat at the house. We would go on the boardwalk at night time to shop or to ride the amusement park rides. We all would wake up real early in the morning to ride bikes on the boardwalk and have breakfast on the boardwalk. My parents would sometimes take us to the Cape May Zoo for the day. When the weather wasn’t so nice outside we all would stay in and play card games with each other. My favorite time of year is Christmas time because I get to see all my relatives at the same time. I would spend Christmas Eve with my dad’s side of the family and we would have dinner together then exchange gifts. My relatives on my dad’s side would have a Chinese auction which is where we each buy a gift to put in the auction and we each would take turns opening a gift in the pile. If you decided that you didn’t want that gift you opened then you could trade it for a gift that you liked from someone else is hand. I would spend Christmas day with my parents, brother, and sister with their families. We would have dinner together then we exchange presents afterwards. I love watching my nieces and nephews open their presents. My parents would take me and my nieces and nephews to look at people’s houses that are decorated with Christmas lights. This Christmas is going to be very emotional and upsetting because last year we pulled the plug on my 21 year old cousin four days after Christmas.

When I was little every Saturday my dad would decide that it was pajama day. We all would stay in our pajamas and get comfy with a good book to read. My favorite spot to read my book is curled up on my bed with a cup of hot chocolate to drink. I always loved it when my parents would say it is a pajama kind of day. We would all stay in our pajamas and watch movies together after dinner. I remember that on pajama days my mom would make her homemade macaroni and cheese for dinner served with stewed tomatoes. My mom and dad taught us at a young age the importance of reading books. Now that I am grown up I still have days where I just stay in my pajamas and get real cozy with a good book to read. I enjoy reading a good book and act like I am there in the book. My very first job was working at a Pet Shop in the mall. I was a sales clerk there and also took care of the animals that we sold there. One of my jobs was to give the dogs a bath and groom them, which I enjoyed doing. I also had to clean the animal cages out so it wouldn’t smell bad in the store. I was great at convincing people to buy the animals and I would sell at least nine animals in a day. We would make commission on every animal that we would sell to a customer. I really enjoyed taking care of the animals and getting them ready to go to a good home. I remember seeing how happy the animals were when someone bought them and how excited the kids were when they would play with the animals. I use to work at Sears in the Montgomery Mall in North Wales, PA in the receiving. My job was to unpack all the items in t he warehouse to prepare them for the store to sell them. I would have to put ink tags on them and put price tags on the items. It was only a seasonal job for me to do during the holidays because that was the busiest time of year so they needed me to help out. I only worked part time there but I did the best job that I could do. I also had to put the priced tagged items on the right clothing racks. My longest job that I ever held was working for the YMCA after school care as a childcare aide. I worked there for two years at the Fort Washington Elementary School in Fort Washington, PA. I really enjoyed working with the children from grades k-5th grade every day after school. I would help with their homework and plan different crafts with them. I enjoyed playing games with them and doing arts and crafts with them too. My job was to come up with activities for them to do to keep them active. I would go on field trips with them to the Philadelphia Zoo and to Franklin Institute. This was the one job that made me want to become a preschool teacher in the first place. I had learned a lot while working on this job as a childcare aide. I really want to become a preschool teacher because I have the passion and desire to work well with young children. I have always helped with teaching Sunday school at my church and babysitting the young children outside of church. I enjoyed looking after them and teaching them new things for the first time. People from my church have told me that I would make a great preschool teacher and that I would be a positive influence on young children. I chose this career path because I wanted to make a difference in this world especially to our future generation. I decided that I wanted to go back to college to get a degree in Early Childhood Education so I can become a certified teacher. I also wanted to prove to myself that I can accomplish anything that I put my mind to. My decision to go back to school was for me to feel like I have done something on my very own. I also wanted to be able to become more independent and self sufficient on myself without needing to rely on other people to help me out financially. I believe that education is very important in society today especially in this economy. My favorite saying is that of Sidney J. Harris, who said: “The whole purpose of education is to turn mirrors into windows.” It means to me that when you look in the mirror you see all your flaws and when you turn it into a window you see what the world sees of your success and confidence. I had learned a lot about myself while taking this class. I learned that there is several different learning techniques. The one theory I liked was Howard Gardner’s multiple intelligences. I could really relate to his theory by knowing how I learn from people. I also learned how health and nutrition play a major role in our lives and how it effects our learning.

My Past, Present, and Future

...My Past, Present, and Future PSY 202 My past was my future, and both were full of doubt and unwillingness to continue my education after I graduated from high school. After high school, three individuals impacted my life and changed my views on family, life, and education. Several years passed with me working a steady job until I found myself almost unemployed and needing the education I had not pursued. This resulted in my decision to join the Army to support my financial needs. I felt satisfied with my employment, until I decided to have a family of my own and with this expansion; I knew I had to further my education to meet the requirements to excel in my career. These life experiences changed my views on family, life, and education. Unfortunately, I was always unbalanced and unable to meet the educational needs that needed to be settled in my life. The three individuals that have influenced my life, and who have helped me become the person that I am today are my father, my uncle, and my wife. Their influence has greatly affected who I am and who I want to be. Urie Bronfenbrenner stated, “Ecological theory proposes that human development is best explained in terms of the interaction between individuals and the environments in which they live or have lived” (Witt & Mossler, 2010, p. 53). My father was a big influence, directing me to conduct myself as a man should. He instilled morals, beliefs, and responsibilities that helped me to look for the good in everyone...

My Past, Present Future

...My Past, Present, and Future Hard life does not equal reason for failure, but reason for determination. Even though it may seem with so much bad you are bound to fail, with all of my bad I'm bound to succeed. I have been through a lot in life, just as every single mother but I still have what it takes for my future success. Do you have what it takes for a brighter future? The first reason I believe hard times give you determination, is because I had a hard childhood growing up. Beginning with my father abusing my mother and he was never around, a mother who was struggling to figure out who she was and what she wanted in life, and how to take care of a teenager with so many bad experiences. My father was murdered in front of me and passed in my arms when I was seven years old. My only father figures I had left were my brothers who for their own reasons couldn’t be around much. I turned to alcohol at a young age thinking it would make my life better. I felt as if I was alone. I didn’t know I had people that would be there for me. All I knew was my immediate family and my friends, which were not good influences. My mother had turned to alcohol as well and I was always home alone or with my uncle John. I never wanted to go to school; however, my uncle encouraged me to do so. I continued to attend school and did the best I thought I could. I got into skating thanks to my uncle and that is how I got rid of my stress if I had it. Uncle John always took me and my friends to the skating...

...CONDITIONAL CASH TRANSFER AND THE POOR PEOPLE The Pantawid Pamilya Pilipino Program (4Ps) or it is also known as Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) Program was launched in late 2007, as the Philippine government’s version of the conditional cash transfer. In exchange for the provision of cash grants for education and health activities, poor families need to comply with a set of conditionalities such as ensuring school attendance of children, regular visits to health centers for immunization, preventive health check-ups and maternal care. The program runs for five years for household-beneficiaries. I believe that the CCT is an important relief measure. The usefulness of such a measure needs to be underscored in light of the fact that many poor Filipinos are desperate to survive these trying times. Social Watch-Philippines has recently conducted a preliminary study and survey of 4Ps beneficiaries and has found out that for many beneficiaries, this is the first time that they have experienced direct support from government on a relatively sustained basis and are therefore grateful for the support. BUT the dilemma and the issue is how long this program can help the poor families or the household beneficiaries of CCT, is there a way to uplift their level of well-being and how will the Department of Social Welfare and Development as the lead agency mandated to address the poverty and alleviate this problem to the CCT beneficiaries? Am presenting a Nut Shell or tapping of resources...

My Past, Present and Future

...My Past, Present, and Future I never thought I would be 42 years old and writing a paper like this one. I had planned to go to college right after high school, but life does not always happen according to plan. In this paper, I will present a brief description of a few of my life experiences that have helped shape the person I am today and analyze some of these experiences using the adult development theories from this class. I will also look ahead to the goals I want to accomplish in the future. I grew up in a military family. Both my dad and my mother had enlisted in the U.S. Air Force after they graduated from high school, and they met when they were stationed at the same air base. As mom tells it, my dad asked her out on a date several times, but she always refused because she thought he was a little wild. However, Mom was an early-morning person, and Dad was a night owl. One evening, my mother was assigned to work the graveyard shift on a security detail, and she had trouble staying awake. Dad did her a favor by working her shift for her, so she thought she at least owed him one date. The rest, as they say, is history. My earliest childhood memories were of growing up on Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi, as the oldest of five children. As the family grew, my mother left the Air Force, but my father continued in military service. My siblings and I are all about two years apart in age, and my childhood was fairly ordinary until I was about ten years old, when...

My Past vs My Future

...in los angles, California and with only one older sibling and my mother we had a lot of hardships. We moved a lot, never stayed in one place for more than a few months, my mom and my brother would always get into fights, my dad was on drugs and my mom kept me home-schooled and sheltered, causing me not to have a social life, or have any kind of friends for that matter. I grew up in an environment where my mom did business a lot because she had her own business and even as I child I would have to help with the family business. I learned about business and technology at a young age along with business. I know so much about business now because of my mother. And yeah at the time it was beneficial but then as time went on I became further behind in learning because I was not in school and the tutors I had were not certified in teaching, they would just be people that we knew. So every year it would get harder and harder for us. It even seems like we became homeless more and more each year. I’ve slept so many places and have been evicted out of the nicest house to the most raggedy motels. My brother and I have such a big age difference, so because of that he was mostly never around, he is 11 older than I, but he was always there for me. Eventually, when we realized there was nothing left for us in California my mother and I just got in our car and left California never to return again. So now were on our way to Georgia. My mom promised we were going to go back to California, she said...

On the Shallowness of Bratman's No Regret Condition

...Alex Pond Phil 4010 Dec. 2, 2014 On the Shallowness of the No Regret Condition I would disbelieve the person who claimed to have never experienced regret. There are so many triggers for this emotion that to have completely avoided it, one may question the authenticity of the social existence of the agent that has managed this avoidance. Bratman initially proposes the no regret condition in an attempt to explain how rational agents may stick to prior plans in the face of a temporary preference reversal. I will argue in this paper that in doing so he makes a positive contribution to practical reasoning theory, but his defense of the condition is contradictory, and highlights underlying commitments he has made regarding what we are ontologically that I believe to be misguided. The working example is that Chrisoula desires to work on a paper, which is to be published, tonight after dinner. During dinner she enjoys a glass of wine, and after she has finished that glass, she genuinely desires another. Knowing fully well that having consumed two glasses of wine, her cognitive and articulative abilities will be noticeably impaired; these two evaluative rankings are mutually exclusive (insofar as Chrisoula values the quality of her work). What should she do? There is a sense that, in their immediacy, evaluative rankings hold equal sway in the decision making process of the decider. The desire Chrisoula had, before dinner, to work on her paper, was equally as strong as her desire...

Willpower

...Instinct” by author Kelly McGonigal analyzes the different willpower challenges them being I Will, I Won't, and I Want. These three main willpower challenges will show the determination of how much progress we have to fulfill our goals along with taking self control. My willpower challenge is to be organized with my time management. To be more specific, I would like to stop procrastination and improve the quality of my work. The belief in one's self doubt and criticism will not help encourage them to reach toward their future accomplishments. The two minds that we have tend to not compromise with each other on what decision to make so we battle with ourselves giving in to temptation. Any progress to our goal is successful as long as we keep up with our perseverance and keep following the right path to a happy future. Receiving guidance and encouragement to motivate a person will make them feel like they have a back bone there for support. We should not remember our simple mistakes but to demolish them with a new encounterment if it occurs. Making wise decisions so our future selves won't receive the consequences and responsibilities. Self forgiveness is the key to guide us to let go of the guilty setbacks from the past and the underestimation of the present and future. The process to any ambition takes dedication and commitment to complete its journey. Anyone can have the same intention but I think that everyone has different boundaries when it comes to actually going through the...

...the last tutorial lesson. At first, I could not totally stay focus after I had closed my eyes. Besides, the noise of air conditioner became more apparent. However, after some guidelines about meditation, I learnt more about it. Then, I tried to focus and calm my mind on the second trial of meditation. The noise of air conditioner was not as apparent as it was in the first time. When I opened my eyes again after the second trial, I felt like my mind was calmer and some of my stress was released. It was a special experience for me as I could try a complete new thing during the tutorial lesson. Actually, it is of great importance for us to know exactly what we are doing in the moment. It is because we can avoid wasting our time and life in doing some meaningless things. Meditation can help us to stay focus on what we are doing in the moment and know more about our goals. Monkey mind, which means an unsettled and uncontrollable mind, is always the stumbling block for gaining a clear and sharp mind. Hence, by meditating, we can avoid getting a monkey mind as our mind is calmed and concentrated during the process of meditation. Usually, people will think about their future, i.e. the deadlines of their projects, and their past, i.e. past exam results. However, seldom do they concern about the work they are doing at present. ...the table. All in all, the peer assessment review went very well. My reaction to the peer assessment was surprising. Being the oldest in the class I thought it would give me a low result. I thought wrong. The results of the peer feedback did not upset me or make me angry. I didn’t mind at all getting feedback from my peers. As a reservist and having that civilian job gave me the experience on how to accept feedback from my peers, coworkers, and supervisors. Having worked for almost 24 years I understand how to soak it up like a sponge and then applying it to myself, subordinates, or future subordinates. I didn’t think my strength and weaknesses were different from the way my peers perceived me. My strengths and weaknesses define who I am. My strengths help me become a better person and my weaknesses keep me fighting to be that better person. Recognizing my own personal strengths, I am able to build on them and use them towards my advantage. I believe these attributes make you who you are and show your true abilities as a person. We all have strengths and weaknesses, and they differ from one person to another. What I learned from my peers about myself is that they see me as being an older brother. I was willing to give my peers some advice based on some of my past experiences. That been there done that type of person. Will this affect my future behavior? For me it won’t. ...a state of terror after one dies. If death is “nothing” (or at least regarded as nothing), any thoughts of fear will not exist because the mind itself will not exist. Our fear of death, according to Epicurus, is a manufactured fear with no rational basis. We fear the unknown and we fear what cannot ever be known. Therefore, such a fear is pointless. Epicurus advises Menoeceus instead to live as if he was immortal, a god in other words. He doesn’t mean that Menoeceus should believe he suddenly has godlike powers. Instead, he means that Menoeceus should discard any thoughts of death and live as if he is as immortal as the gods. In my opinion, the philosophy of Epicurus has a lot in common with the current popularity of “mindfulness.” The ideas are much the same – that one should live entirely in the present moment. Regrets are useless since the past cannot be changed; fears of the future are meaningless since the future is always unknown. (Why worry about something that may never happen?) We can enjoy the...

Smooth Plantation Summary

...I have never been one that had much interest in history. While it serves its purpose in providing insight it always repeats itself as often stated. George Santayana described history as “nothing but assisted and recorded memory,” as well as something “condemned to [be] repeat[ed]” if past mistakes were not taken into account for future dealings. For the most part, humans have learned a great deal from the past but pick and choose when to properly utilize that knowledge, when to remain stagnant, and when to forget lessons learned entirely. Reading William Bradford’s history of Plimoth Plantation however, helped me remember the incredible endurance God imparted in the human spirit and reaffirmed how He always leads His people to victory after...

Why I Majored in History

...History to me is a piece of the past. Whether written, verbal, portrayed through art or songs, history is our way of connecting with the past. In order to understand history, we must first figure out where we are trying to head as a group or society, and then once we figure our direction, we must analyze the past to ensure we don’t make the same mistakes previously undertaken. My favorite subject is science, however everything that happens in the world falls under history at some point in time, based simply on the fact that everything we do or say will become history after it’s done or said. I want to study history and find more about my families’ history, and my culture in parts of the world where my descendants come from. It is extremely important to know where I come from and who my people are, as one day I will marry and settle down with my own family. I would like very much to be able to tell them about our families’ history and from where they come from. Most important is not letting my families’ history die with my elders. The only way I know of doing this is to research, talk, and spend more time with them and let them tell me everything they know so that I can research further and find more information out than previously known. To me, history is more than linking our past. It offers a small glimpse of the future. Not all, but most families way of doing things, professions, hobbies, etc., all come from learned behavior that may have been passed down from...
