...Using Facebook to Teach Rhetorical Analysis Jane Mathison Fife The attraction of Facebook is a puzzle to many people over the age of thirtyfive, and that includes most college faculty. Yet students confess to spending significant amounts of time on Facebook, sometimes hours a day. If you teach in a computer classroom, you have probably observed students using Facebook when you walk in the room. Literacy practices that fall outside the realm of traditional academic writing, like Facebook, can easily be seen as a threat to print literacy by teachers, especially when they sneak into the classroom uninvited as students check their Facebook profiles instead of participating in class discussions and activities. This common reaction reflects James King and David O’Brien’s (2002: 42) characterization of the dichotomy teachers often perceive between school and nonschool literacy activities (although they are not referring to Facebook specifically): “From teachers’ perspectives, all of these presumably pleasurable experiences with multimedia detract from students’ engagement with their real work. What is interesting about this article (besides its content) is the author, who is a high school sophomore, by the name of Veronica Andreades. She explains in her writing that teenagers have asked her why her parents homeschooled her. They also suggested that she must not have any friends or that she is socially awkward. Ms. Andreade’s point in this article was to disprove that shadowing notion that homeschooling is bad, and to show that in fact, homeschooling, has proven more beneficial to her life than what public schooling had to offer. This article jumped out to me more than the other opinion articles in the Journal due to my similarities with the author. Veronica is a minister’s daughter who is homeschooled. I was also homeschooled through the sixth grade and my dad has been a minister since I was born. The second reason this article stood out to me was that I disagreed with the majority of the article even though I had gone through most of the same confrontations she wrote about with fellow teenagers. In agreement with Veronica, homeschooling can give you a competitive edge in that, you can study without the limitations of your class. ...I’m currently sitting here typing this discussion with a Caramel Macchiato from Starbucks, a bag of Hot Cheetos and a large Snickers bar next to me. I don’t consider this the best healthiest lunch, but in all honesty, this is what I felt like eating in the short amount of time I had to grab a “lunch”. I thought it was pretty ironic that while I was reading about all these “unhealthy” food options, I was eating them. This obesity epidemic has carved its way so deep into our lives, there is possible room to improve, but it’s difficult to come up with some miracle solution to make it disappear. Kelley Brownell suggests that the legislature should get rid of food advertising especially ones pointed at children watching television and also eliminating soft drinks and unhealthy snacks from school vending machines (Newman, 2004). I do favor Kelly Brownell’s suggestions but it is obviously easier said than done. I understand that food advertising is something that children see often when watching television and it does often times persuade children to decide to get up and look for something to snack on. But what is the point of getting rid of these advertisements when they could already have it in their pantry? If we get rid of these foods at school, how would we know if the kids aren’t just going to go home and eat them? I created six classes of mediums through which mass communication presents itself- television, movies (film), radio, phone (including both landlines and cellular devices), internet, and print. But for me it was, in many ways, the same old problem. With early drafts of a paper rarely required, I came time and time again to a point where a significant portion of my grade rested on what was essentially a single night’s work.
