It visualizes the negation of female gender in art. The paper investigates the dichotomy of language, the use of irony and situational metaphors to displace conventional ones; it blends theories with critical evaluation of discourse. The research uses empirical methods in solving hypothetical questions with the use of extensive and relatively unstructured interviews. It examines the interviews of twenty five people independently, these people include: University lecturers, students, administrative and technical staff. ...leadership is an ancient concept and one that is used in everyday language. In addition, the language we use is not just a means of communication; it involves thinking and reasoning. In ancient Chinese writings we learn that if a leader is good it is more likely that those who follow will also be good. If the leader is selfish, so will the followers be selfish. Confucius regarded education as a transformational process that takes place within an individual but does so through conversation with others. Learning through others has been a common theme in the chapters written here from different parts of the world. In other words, learning leadership is not so much an isolated journey as one that exists in a set of relations with others. Finding what leadership potential you have is not something you do in isolation or on a training course. While the 20th century provided a huge richness of writings on leadership, leadership development in organizations focused on the individual as leader and this has created a gap between theory and practice. As John Gardner wrote: 'We have barely scratched the surface in our effort towards leadership development. ...Iddir, metaphor for solidaity in Ethiopia Solomon Dejene The aim of this paper is to gain insight into the relation between iddirs and sustainable development in Ethiopia. The material to achieve the aim is gathered through literature review and field work. The method of analysis is inspired by Norman Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis (henceforth CDA). CDA focuses on the relation between language use and social reality. It combines three forms of analysis. The first is linguistic analysis of text. It deals with wording, grammar, syntax, cohesion, metaphor, transitivity, and so forth The second deals with discursive practice which is an analysis of the (processes of) production, distribution and consumption of texts. At this stage we look at inter-textuality and inter-discursivity. The third form studies the socio-cognitive effects of discursive practice, in particular, reproduction or transformation of status quo. Definitions of the key concepts are given in the introduction of this book. One of the issues to be dealt with is to what extent iddir can be considered indigenous. The paper is divided into four sections. The first section is a review of several publications on iddir. The second section is an overview of data gathered through field work. In order to have a clear understanding about the new generation, this article examines the working encounter of Generation Y. Generation Y in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and four cities in mainland China were studied. How the social environment influenced their attitudes and behavior in work and geographical mobility, and how geographical mobility created problems to the migrants were studied. We find that the Generation Y in Hong Kong is facing more competition than the Generation Y in mainland. In geographical mobility, most of the respondents accept geographical mobility. The findings provide some insights on how the social environment shapes the generation. ...Using Facebook to Teach Rhetorical Analysis Jane Mathison Fife The attraction of Facebook is a puzzle to many people over the age of thirtyfive, and that includes most college faculty. Yet students confess to spending significant amounts of time on Facebook, sometimes hours a day. If you teach in a computer classroom, you have probably observed students using Facebook when you walk in the room. Literacy practices that fall outside the realm of traditional academic writing, like Facebook, can easily be seen as a threat to print literacy by teachers, especially when they sneak into the classroom uninvited as students check their Facebook profiles instead of participating in class discussions and activities. This common reaction reflects James King and David O’Brien’s (2002: 42) characterization of the dichotomy teachers often perceive between school and nonschool literacy activities (although they are not referring to Facebook specifically): “From teachers’ perspectives, all of these presumably pleasurable experiences with multimedia detract from students’ engagement with their real work. Within the classroom economy technology work is time off task; it is classified as a sort of leisure recreational activity.” This dichotomy can be broken down, though; students’ enthusiasm for and immersion in these nonacademic literacies can be used to complement their learning of critical inquiry and traditional academic concepts like rhetorical analysis.
