My Roommate

So, a couple of weeks ago, one of my roommates, Jonathan (who, for briefest background information, will rewash clothes multiple times if they have gotten wrinkled from being left in the dryer for too long, but who will not just *iron the clothes*) announced that he would be able to get some new furniture for the apartment, but he would need Ari (our other roommate) and me to help bring it in. I was initially opposed...we already had a couch and didn't need another. There were other pieces of furniture we could use (dining room chairs or a table to replace our lawn chairs and lawn table, for example), but I didn't want to get involved with whatever shenanigans that will come over just getting a *second couch*.

But eventually, Jonathan talked Ari and me into helping. (Our reservations had been that we thought he was going to ask us to split the cost of the furniture, reasoning that each of us would be using it. I was opposed to the prospect of paying, even in part, for furniture that I had never seen before, but it turned out that the furniture was free -- Jonathan's mom's friend was giving away the furniture, not selling it.)

Soon, the day came for us to help move the furniture and we went to U-Haul to pick up the truck that Jonathan had reserved. We took Ari's car to the U-Haul place, and the plan was that Jon would drive the U-Haul truck to his mom's friend's apartment, I would be his navigator (ughggghhh), and then Ari would follow with his car, so he didn't have to leave his nice car at the U-Haul place.

...well, it turned out that Jon's driver's license expired, so he couldn't drive the U-Haul. I asked him, "Did you know your driver's license had expired? How long have you been driving with an expired license?"

Jon replied, "It expired on my birthday last month...but I got it renewed in advance, so I'm not driving with an expired license...it's just the new one hasn't come in yet. I thought that the U-Haul people would be able to look up my driver's license number in the system and see that it has been renewed. Can't police do that, after all?"

Jon then pointed out, "Well, we only have this U-Haul until 4...so, maybe one of you guys can drive it?"

I glanced at the truck, a behemoth compared to a Honda Fit, and answered, "That's not going to happen." Running scenarios in my mind, I concluded that on the bright side, a U-Haul truck probably wouldn't roll over like my old Dodge Neon did.

Ari responded, "There's no way I'll just leave my car here, and I'd rather if no one else drove it either...so we'll have to go back to the apartment and come back here with your car if you want me to drive this truck."

So Jon went in to the U-Haul place and asked if he could pay for the U-Haul if someone *else* would be driving. While Jon was inside, Ari said to me, "Why doesn't Jon ever think these things through? Every time, he always asks me to do shit for him on the spur of the moment...I've never even driven something like that and I don't need to have some kind of accident on my record...the worst thing is, I always feel bad for just wanting to say, no, even though in the end, I never do."

I remarked back, "Maybe that's why Jon doesn't bother me with his shitty relationship bullshit. Because I've never been afraid to call him out on any of it...I guess that's why Jon says you're the better roommate too, haha..."

Jon came back and confirmed that it would be possible for him to pay for the truck and insurance, while someone else drove the truck. And so, we went back to the apartment to get Jon's car.

At the apartment, Ari realized that Jon had gotten some mail the day prior that he had not opened...and lo and behold, it was Jon's renewed driver's license.

Since Jon could now drive the truck, we started driving back to the U-Haul place in Ari's car -- since Ari could, just as planned, drive behind.

On the way there, we got stopped as a queue of MetroRail cars crossed by, transporting people to and from their own personal problems. Ari cursed the fact that we were wasting so much time (or perhaps he was cursing the fact that his average speed for the trip, stop lights and all, would dip below 50 miles per hour). Jon remarked that Ari should work on being a better person.

...It seemed funny to me that someone would tell the guy who was driving him to the U-Haul place, who was willing to cover for him and drive the U-Haul because he did not have a valid driver's license on hand -- and most importantly, who was doing all of this just because he couldn't say "no" to people in need -- that that guy needed to be a better person just because he swore. But then again, not sharing Jonathan's evangelical Christian faith, perhaps I just didn't understand.

I told Jon as such.

Jon responded: "When I talk to Ari like that, he knows that I don't mean anything of it. I'm not trying to hurt him with my comments, and that's why Ari ultimately makes such a good roommate, unlike some others."

I grinned from ear to ear until my cheeks shivered and quivered either from contempt or from the feigned, false nature of it. I should've just held that grin from the very beginning. It was such a sunny day, after all. And if no one was even going to smirk at my funny little observation, then I would do it for us all.

We got to the U-Haul place and Jon went into the U-Haul place. It was deja vu, except that Jon came out with truck keys. When Jonathan went into the U-Haul truck, I sat perfectly still inside Ari's car. Maybe he would just drive off without a navigator? But after turning on the truck, and fiddling and fidgeting with some things inside for a quantum eternity, he turned the truck back off. He came out and to Ari's car and he said, in that passive, indirect way that he has: "Hey, so...I just think it would be better if I had someone else in the truck as well...if that works for either of you."

Ari passed the buck, "Well, I have to drive my car, just as we agreed."

I grimaced inside. I wasn't as proficient, in passive indirectness. I gave my best shot anyway: "Well, it seems to me that Ari will certainly need some help getting to this person's place...whereas you should already know where it is."

From Jonathan, "Actually, I've never been there before. I've never even met this particular friend of my mom's."

"Ah...but do you have navigation on your phone?" (A fatal mistake: of course he didn't. Jonathan wouldn't even pay for a texting plan. That, of course, hadn't stopped Ellie from breaking up with him over text message, although technically, they weren't even official, so there wasn't anything to break up.)

"I have these directions written on paper...if you think it would be best for me to just use them while driving, then I can do that."

I had to admit that I did not think that best. Yet, reminded of a particular webcomic (and because, like my mother says, I don't have a single original thought in my head): all I could hear was my father's voice in my head, saying: "I warned you about that guy, son!!!! I told you dog! I TOLD you, man. I TOLD you to stay away from guys like that."

But I didn't know of any socially graceful and indirect ways to get out of it...The bucked stopped at me. And so I got into the passenger seat of the U-Haul and put in the address to Google Navigation.

Jonathan offered to me, as he turned the U-Haul on again, "You know...I've never driven one of these before...it'll be interesting."

And then I noticed the sign on the glove box: For children's safety, this vehicle is NOT EQUIPPED WITH A PASSENGER-SIDE AIR BAG.

Good thing I'm not a child. Just a shitty roommate.

Scott Sprier vs My Roommate

...Reading Reaction 2 - Scott Sprier vs My Roommate One very important characteristics of a leader in any organization is their motivation to achieve. Leaders must be willing to get out of heir way to achieve something, usually well though out goals. In Scott Sprier’s text “Leadership Run Amok” he argues that this motivation “generates passion and energy, which fuel growth and help companies sustain performance over the long term”. He also distinguishes the 6 styles of leadership that can be seen in leaders across groups and organizations. My roommate, Eytan, is currently working on a startup, and I have been very lucky to see the whole process. He manages very big team of motivated individuals, all with different tasks. He has a group of coders which are creating an app in Turkey, and a big group of college ambassadors that are helping them distribute it around the country. I have noticed that his style changes a lot when he is talking to the different groups. When Eytan is talking to the coders, he is very directive and tells them exactly what he is expecting and when he is expecting things. He gives no discretion to the coders because they do not have ny creative background. However, when he talks to his brand ambassadors his style is more visionary and participative. Brand ambassadors are definitely not in high stress situations, and what my roommate wants to achieve is to get them to share his goal and vision. He tries to get them as involved as they can in the startup...

Justin: One Night Only

...One Night With Justin January 17, 2007 is a night I will remember forever. It is the night my dreams became a reality for one night and one night only. On this day at 7:30P.M., at the Save-Mart Center in Fresno, California, I saw the man of my dream, My Love, Justin Timberlake. What made this night even better was the fact that I was about 20 feet from the stage. I had floor seats to the most amazing concert ever. My roommate and I were in heaven. Justin came to Fresno on his FutureSex/LoveSounds tour. Joining him on tour was female singer Pink, who was the opening act, and producer and rapper Timbaland, who joined Justin on stage for a new numbers, including a monologue of his own. Pink opened up the show at the stroke of 7:30. She came out in a denim tank top and denim pleaded skirt. She got the party started. Her performance was energetic and amazing. She even performed an acrobatic routine in the air. At around 9:00P.M., the teasing began. The band members slowly made their way to the stage and they began to play a little interlude. The arena, already lively, began screaming their heads off, crying, shaking, jumping up and down, and anticipating the moment when the most amazing man in the world would reveal himself. The first song started up. It was the title track FutureSex/LoveSounds. Justin emerged from the center of the stage, dressed in a black suit, with a white guitar around his neck. Silk screens were surrounding the entire round stage. The stage...

...Kimberly Tucker, Chris Salt, Ashley Solomon Case 7: Mattel: Overcoming Marketing and Manufacturing Challenges 11/01/2010 Marketing Management 6800 Section 004 The Problem: The problem surrounding Mattel Inc., one of the world’s largest toy companies, is their mismanagement of international subcontractors and vendors and the production of certain toys (the manufacturing process), as well as their inability to adapt their marketing strategy or product to the constantly changing “demographic and socioeconomic trends” (Ferrell, et. all 466). This is supported by Mattel’s legal battle with Carter Bryant and MGA, their forced recall of certain toys that were manufactured overseas, and the increasing rate at which traditional toys are becoming less appealing to today’s young audience. Essentially, Mattel’s mismanagement and oversight lead to violations in terms of ethical and social responsibilities and safety standards. Issues Relevant to the Problem: Mattel’s problem of mismanagement can be divided into several issues that need to be considered: legal issues, international supply chain issues, and an increase in technology-based toys. In regards to legal issues, Mattel has been involved in prolonged litigation with Carter Bryant and MGA over a breach of an employment contract and copyright infringement. Due to Mattel’s poor management of its overseas manufacturers, in which unauthorized subcontractors and third-party suppliers were hired and unsafe materials used, several...

That is why every person has a story to tell, and it is why we can learn from every single person. And this essay is about my short autobiography, which can give you an indication of my personal story. I came into this world on the windy morning of October 15, 1990. I was born in Cua Viet, a small town in Vietnam. I am the 5th child among the 5 children of my parent. I grew up and spent almost my whole life in my country. Now, I am the second year student in Business Accounting- the 2 year program. I have been through many life-changing situations in past 3 years. These situations have had both positive and negative impacts to me. My goals from 5 years ago compare to my current goals are totally different. After finishing 12th grade, I just wanted to become a Mathematics teacher, so I went to Hue University and tried my best to achieve the goal. However, when I was the 2nd year student of the Hue University, I found that I was no longer interested in becoming a teacher. Hence, I dropped the school and wanted to get a better education in Canada and seek opportunities in accounting. Since then, my life has changed. On one hand, starting my new life in a strange country is so hard. When I just came, I faced many difficulties, such as the language, the weather and the life style. Firstly, language was a big matter when I first came. Speaking was one of the linguistic problems...

Descriptive Hate for Work

...Freddy Rodriguez Prof. Chamberlain English 063 16 Oct, 2012 My Hate for Work We all deal with some sort of issue that makes our work experience negative. In my case its cooking at a restaurant where all you hear is kids screaming uncontrollably from the control point window in the grill, the fog coming from both the fryer and grill, and last, but not least the “pushing and shoving” from the grill team when we’re pulling off a thousand dollar hour. If you haven’t guessed yet, its Friendly’s “Where ice cream makes the meal”... and my hate for people. I’m just kidding, but I don’t like rude people; like if I’m nice to you why can’t you return the nice gesture? Anyways (back on track) its crazy how many sounds you hear, things you see and objects you feel within a five hour shift that actually feels like two because of working through a rush period. Children children children, I hate them. Hate is a strong word? Trust me I KNOW! I cannot fathom the loud screaming that sounds like metal to metal screeching; all because mommy won’t them get ice cream. The sad part is that I work in the grill and its sort of tucked away in the back. Imagining the intensity of the screaming? Quite horrible isn’t it? As if the loud grinding gears of their voices isn’t enough, I have the pleasure of watching them run around like its free game day at chuck e cheese or something. The only part I enjoy of them running around like maniacs is seeing the huge bright shiny smile on their faces, it makes...

Most Influential Person

...Narrowing down to on person who had had an impact on my life is a difficult task, and one that requires a lot of thought. There have been many, but as I travel back through my memories, one person stands out above the rest, my mother. Whether in the classroom or at home, that one individual continuously shines. She knows how to help me when a problem arises, she is there to pick me up when I fall, and she is there as my biggest supporter when all is going well. She always seems to know when to push me or when to just step back and allow me to learn life lessons. One example of her driving me to do my best is a time that I had an extremely tough exam in Chemistry. This was a must pass test and to make it worse, it was over a chapter where I struggled. I came close to giving up and failing the test, but somehow my mom knew I was fighting this battle. She came to me and explained how giving up would interfere with my dream of going to college. It might not keep me out of college, but it would set my standards lower than they needed to be. My mom did not force me to study, but instead, she allowed me to make a decision that would effect me right then and possibly in the future. My mom has made a huge impact in my life in such a positive way. She has pushed me to where I am now. Through her example and our many talks, I have learned that hard work and perserverance can and will take you a long way in this world. I did pass that...

It means that there are not many details in the sentence, but that the sentence introduces an overall idea that you want to discuss later in the paragraph. For example, suppose that you want to write a paragraph about the natural landmarks of your hometown. The first part of your paragraph might look like this: My hometown is famous for several amazing natural features. First, it is noted for the Wheaton River, which is very wide and beautiful. Also, on the other side of the town is Wheaton Hill, which is unusual because it is very steep. (Notice how the first sentence begins with "My hometown..." a few spaces to the right of the paragraph edge. This is an indentation. All paragraphs in English MUST begin with an indentation.) Note how the first sentence, My hometown, Wheaton, is famous for several amazing geographical features,is the most general statement. This sentence is...

My ultimate dream is to become a flight attendant, cabin crew, flight crew or whatever they call this. Yes, I’ve been dreaming to become one someday and I am trying to give my very best for this not to become an unclear vision. I want this to manifest, I want this to happen in my life in every good ways or means I can. There are some times in my life when I face mirror, stand classically and gracefully and try to imitate flight attendants posture and speaking. I used to act like there are passengers and I am orienting them with safety procedures inside the plane. To train to become a flight attendant costs so much, that’s why my parents wasn’t able to send me to those schools practicing this course. But I’ve got this what they called life’s principle. Julia's Tribute

...For those of you that don't know me my name is Brittany. I work at The Willows at Citation where I took care of Julia. For the short 3 months and 11 days that I knew Julia. I've learned something that no book could possibly ever teach me. On our Journey together I was constantly being moved and touched in ways that I often cannot describe. To live with Alzheimer's and still laugh, love and find joy is nothing short of amazing. I never got that chance to meet Julia when she was full of life and energy. Instead God blessed me with Julia on May 6th of this year. God had also blessed me with the ability to really connect with Julia. I spent many nights by her bedside, I've spent many hours listening, I've shared many tears with her daughter's and I've experienced many lifelong connections. Julia taught me the importance of living in the moment and finding joy in the small things. No two minutes were alike. Things were constantly changing and it put us on the wildest roller coaster ride imaginable. I must say it took a while and I'm sure I'm speaking for a few others when I say this but I came to realize that in order to survive, you must live in the moment and appreciate each and every good thing that happens, no matter how small. Sometimes you really have to dig deep to find the good in a lousy situation. The interesting thing is that bar is constantly moving. That thing that may have seemed completely insignificant a few months ago, can suddenly become the joy that gets...

My Life to Save

...Prologue I leaned over the toilet for the fourth time this morning spilling whatever was left in my stomach. I dry heaved for the next five minutes trying to rid whatever was giving me this ill feeling. Once I finished I wiped the sweat off my forehead and laid back against my cold tub. It felt good against my warm skin. I removed my sweat drenched shirt and just laid against the tile floor. I have never experience such pain and nausea in my life. I didn’t want to think about the many possibilities that could be wrong with me. "Ki you alright?" asked my eight year old brother behind my bathroom door. "Yes boo just go get me a bottle of water." I could hear him scurrying off down the stairs to the kitchen. I tried my best to stand up but I just felt too weak. All of a sudden my body grew very tired and I couldn’t get my body to move. I heard my door open and a scream. "Mom, Dad hurry!" yelled my brother Jasone. I didn’t understand why he was screaming until I followed his horrified eyes down to my floor and there was blood everywhere. I slowly reached up to touch my nose and I felt the blood all over my hands and I knew something was definitely wrong. My brother rushed over to me and held my head in his lap as he cried. I tried to reach up and touch him but it all hurt too much. "Lord please I’m not ready to die." I said to myself. "Mom!!" my brother cried out again. "Jasone what is you doing in your sister room and screaming on-" she couldn’t continue her sentence as she...

...the outside. I had to make my mind up whether to knock or press the bell. I turned to face the garden. I thought about going back to my car and drove home. Home. That was where I wanted to be; or was it where I would be after I knocked the door? I sighed and walked to the side where there was a wooden bench by the beautiful garden. I could see that the woman in the family loved the garden. The smell of white lilies reminded me of the florist down the road on Sixteenth Street. I sat on the sturdy looking wooden bench, trying to figure out what I would say if someone was to open the door. I wished I did not find out where she was so that I would not have three sleepless nights thinking of why she left me, whether she was looking for me or whether I should be angry. I was abandoned at Bliss Home when I was barely four. They said they found me playing joyfully in the playground, innocently thinking that I was sent to school. Don T Call Me Ishmael: Plot Analysis

...The major plots of Don't call me Ishmael all have teamwork, a major plot was when Ishmael went to his first debate team speak. Thanks to James Scobie the first debate went perfect. Ishmael was on the sideline watching and he says, “Somehow thanks to scobie, we managed to pull some kind of a case together and scramble to our first debate. Ignatius was first speaker, Orazio was second and Scobie was third. When Scobie spoke, it was like someone turning on a light in a darkened room.” (p.141, bauer, 2003). Ishmael says himself that James carried their team. He also says that James’s speech had such a massive effect on the audience, his speech turned on a light in a dark room, which shows us how strong James’s voice is in persuading. Another major plot was when Barry Bagsley used Danny Wallace to make sure that Ishmael does not get involved with Barry’s plans to bring fear back into James. Ishmael tells us what he sees, “In deep conversation were James and Barry. When they came inside in the room I knew I couldn't warn James otherwise Danny Wallace would have shut me up.” (p.82-83, bauer, 2003). Barry may not be the sharpest tool in the shed but he definitely knows how to use his friends to his advantage. This quote shows us that Barry was extremely organised with his plan. Barry gained James’s trust and then used that to attack him. Effective teamwork is shown in don't call me Ishmael when a unorganised debate team meets to discuss their topic. As a leader James Scobie is able...
