Dawn of the industrial revolution * Two major groups in England * Aristocrats * Poor * Very rich in natural resources * Many countries are providing things for England * Helped with the textile industries * Great competition among manufactures
Industrialization and nationalism * Coal and steam replaced wind and water as new sources of energy and power * Cities grew as people moved from the country to work in factories * Did not only happen in England but went until North America * 1780s started in Britain * Normal people could buy manufactured things * Population grew due to the supply of food * Entrepreneurs are wealthy people. Aristocrats in short. Provided things to the poor. * This caused a shift in an economy based on farming to an economy based on machines * Weaving and spinning (Spinning is for thread and weaving for making cloth which would be our clothes) * Cottage system is where people work in their own house by bringing home machines to weave or spin. * Aristocrats built factories which brought the new factory system. Machines were placed there and people went there to work instead of having huge machines at home. * James Wyatt. Steam power could now be used to spin cotton * 1840, cotton was main product of England. * People imported from England all over the world just for cotton to make clothes * Steam engine was critical * Boil water requires coal to boil so that steam can be produced. The coal becomes iron. * This way, they run the machine and retrieve iron from the used coal. * High quality iron was used to build new machines. * They don’t waste a single material * 1850. Railroads for trains all over the country. * 1804. Carriages or horses. * They had to walk when they went to work because they

...Science Fair Home Ideas, Tips & Projects to Avoid Steps of Scientific Method My Idea Problem & Hypothesis Problem Statement and Hypothesis 03/25/201245 Comments Picture Now that you know your independent and dependent variable, the rest of the science fair project is a piece of cake. Your problem statement and hypothesis are extremely easy to write if you have determined your independent and dependent variables. Lets begin with the problem statement. This statement is ALWAYS written as a question. The question should always start with either which or how. The one you choose will depend on your independent and dependent variable. The form should be Which or How will the independent variable affect the dependent variable. Picture Look at the examples to the left. These questions are problem statements based on the independent and dependent variables which were previously decided. How will .... or Which amount .... are excellent ways of starting your problem statement. As you can see, both of these problem statements fit the format described above. How or which independent will affect the dependent. Okay, now it is time for you to write your problem statement for your science fair project. 1. What is your problem statement? Picture Our next step is to write a hypothesis. The hypothesis is very much like the problem statement except it is the answer to your question. The hypothesis should always start with I THINK ...., the you will choose one...

Science Fair Project

...My Science Fair Project During my seventh grade year in the spring of 2013, I developed my science fair project about the correlations in sportsmanship between middle school boys that participate in sports and their parents. The judges at my school science fair conveyed to me that my project was not a science project. I did not complain about this, and my teacher still allowed me to attend the annual Greater New Orleans Science and Engineering Fair (GNOSEF) hosted by Tulane University. I placed first in that competition and ended up winning the Behavioral Science division at the Louisiana Science and Engineering Fair (LSEF), which took place at the campus of Louisiana State University. I learned through this experience that my maintaining...

Plastic

...“Genius,” Thomas Edison famously said, “is 1 percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration.” He would have found a kindred spirit in Elif Bilgin, 16, of Istanbul, Turkey, winner of the 2013 $50,000 Science in Action award, part of the third annual Google Science Fair. The award honors a project that can make a practical difference by addressing an environmental, health or resources challenge; it should be innovative, easy to put into action and reproducible in other communities. Bilgin spent two years toiling away on her project to develop a bioplastic from discarded banana peels, enduring 10 failed trials of plastics that weren’t strong enough or that decayed rapidly. She was undaunted. As she put it in her project description: “Even Thomas Edison said, ‘I have not failed. I have just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.’” Finally, in her last two trials, she made plastics with the features she sought, and it did not decay. We admire her persistence, which will be help her to take advantage of another aspect of her Science in Action prize—a year’s worth of mentoring to help further her work. I like to think, too, that Edison, who used to stop by the Scientific American offices in New York City to demonstrate his latest inventions, would have approved. The ingredients to make Bilgin’s plastic are relatively benign. As she wrote in her entry materials, “it is possible to say that one could do it at home.” In her research, she learned that starch and cellulose are used elsewhere...

Dream

...as long as I can remember, I have dreamed of science. Where others see the engineering, experimentation, and presentation of science as a chore, I only see excitement. Even as a child I constantly sought it out, first on television with Bill Nye and The Mythbusters, then later in person in every museum exhibit I could find. Science in all its forms fascinated me, but science projects in particular were a category all to themselves. To me, science projects were a special joy that only grew with time. In fact, it was this continued fascination for hands-on science that brought me years later to the sauna that is the University of Alabama in mid-June. Participating in the Student Science Training Program and working in their lab made me feel like a kid in a candy store. Just the thought of participating in a project at this level of scientific rigor made me forget that this was supposed to be my summer break and I spent the first day eagerly examining every piece of equipment. Even at first, when the whole research group sat there doing rote calculations and others felt like they were staring down the barrel of defeated purpose, I remained enthusiastic. Time and time again I reminded myself of that famous phrase "great effort leads to great rewards," and sure enough, soon my aspirations began to be met. This shift in attitude also coincided with a shift in location: from the computer desk to the laser lab. It was finally time to get my hands dirty. Now things began to get really...

What Sparked Your Interest In Computer Science

...computer science? How did this lead you to major in computer science and what do you hope to accomplish with your degree? In your answer, please describe how your experiences have influenced the goals you have for yourself. My interest in computer science started when I was a young child. I’ve always been interested in using the computer, and I’ve been fortunate enough to be born at the precipice of the technological age. This has allowed me to grow up alongside technology, getting bigger while technology helped the world get smaller. I am completely comfortable with technology and have an aptitude for figuring my way around any piece of technology. Using the computer feels natural to me; it feels like where I should be centering my hard work, ambition, and focus. When deciding a major for college, I...

Many Many Sops

...collection of lots of sops of lots of seniors. Browse. According to whacko. (Addressed to our batch) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ As for SOPs, don't worry too much. All of you have good writing skills. Anyway, my advice on this matter is: [1] Have a look at some SOPs *now* or early next SEM. [2] When it's time to write your own SOP, do it *fully* by yourself. Do not look at anybody else's SOP. [3] Having made version 1.0 of your SOP, *now* take a look at as many SOPs as you can of guys in your area. Borrow points from then which you think are good. [4] Your SOP does not have to be too big. We at IITB tend to write long SOPs (1.5 to 2 pages) whereas IITM guys (who get better schools!)Usually write 0.75 page (max. 1 page). Basically, their SOPs are much more direct and to-the-point than ours. [5] REMEMBER THAT A SOP *MUST* BE ORIGINAL. Statement of Purpose I am applying to Stanford University for admission to the Ph.D. program in Computer Science. I am interested in Theoretical Computer Science, particularly in the Design and Analysis of Approximation Algorithms, Combinatory and Complexity Theory. My interest in Mathematics goes back to the time I was at school. This interest has only grown through my years in school and high school, as I have learnt more and more about the subject. Having represented India at the International Mathematical Olympiads on two occasions, I have been exposed to elements of Discrete Mathematics, particularly...

Communication

...options making the best choice, making a plan of how you’re going to act on your decision, and reflect your choice to see how your decision help you. I have chosen the scenario; “If your child comes home from school with an assignment sheet for a school project. He/ She is very excited about the project and begins work immediately, doing research on the internet and gathering materials. You read over the assignment sheet and notice that your child does not include all of the required items in the project, and you have some ideas on how to improve the quantity of the presentation. You recently read an article in a parenting magazine about the importance of a child developing responsibility for his/her own learning. You recall the many ways in which your parents took over your school projects. You, on the other hand, want to encourage your child’s confidence in his/ her ability to complete a project independently. The next day, you are at the grocery store when you see a parent of a student in your child’s class. That parent spent over $30 in supplies for the science project and is taking a day off of work to put the pieces of the project together. This scenario reminds me of my daughter because she would rush through her project, not putting enough effort, and I’ll have to be the one to tell her right from wrong. As a parent, you find checking on your child...
