Starbucks Organizational Behaviors

...I have chosen to review the organizational structure of Starbucks Coffee, both for successful and unsuccessful organization behaviors and concepts that have been intertwined into the Starbucks business structure. At first glance I would have thought that Starbucks has made all of the right business moves along the way as they started in Seattle as a single neighborhood coffee house and have grown to be a globally recognized brand with stores in 50 countries worldwide. However, no organization is perfect and mistakes do get made. In this class I have learned that a good portion of what makes and organization successful is if they are able to take the learning’s from the mistakes made and implement positive changes that benefit the organization for years come. I have also learned that a company’s organizational structure needs to be adaptable. An organization may have a winning financial recipe but as the economy and customer desires change with time, the organization needs to be able to implement a change to the management structure and correct behaviors that are either no longer helping or negatively impacting the organizations stability and financial gain. Starbucks fosters a strong belief in promoting positive group behaviors and working together as a unified team on all levels of the organization. Each person has an accountability and responsibility in supporting the organizations goals and vision. Unity is important is this area as the organizations achievements are not...

Howard Schultz

...why he is during this paper. Howard Schultz is best known as the chairman and CEO of Starbucks and a former owner of the Seattle Super Sonics. Howard Schultz began his career very quickly. It all started after he graduated from college, he was working as a salesman for Hammarplast, a business that sold European coffee makers. As Schultz made his way through the company he noticed they were selling more to a company in Seattle. So, Schultz went to Seattle to see whom they were selling to and once when he walked through the doors of Starbucks he knew he needed to work there, Schultz he said “I can’t explain it. But I knew I was in a special place, and the product kind of spoke to me.” Drawn to Seattle and its extraordinary coffee culture, Howard moved from his native New York and joined Starbucks, in 1982, as director of operations and marketing when Starbucks had only four stores. In 1983, he travelled to Milan, Italy, he saw that there were so many coffee bars, that he came with the idea of coffee drinks. Schultz said, “I saw something. Not only the romance of coffee, but a sense of community. And the connection that people had to coffee- the place and one another”. He left Starbucks for a short period of time to start his own coffeehouse, Il Giornale coffeehouses and returned in August 1987 as chief executive officer to purchase Starbucks with the help of local investors. Today, Starbucks is the premier purveyor of the finest coffee in the world, with more than 23,00 stores...

Starbucks Analysis

...Case Analysis and Three year Plan for Starbucks Abstract Case Analysis and Three year Plan for Starbucks Module 7 Final project Case Analysis - Starbucks Module 7 Final project Case Analysis - Starbucks Courtney Parker Strategy Final Project Case Analysis – Starbucks For my case study I have chosen the corporation of Starbucks. The intention of this paper is to introduce the mission and vision statement of Starbucks along with a presentation and review of their code of ethics. These statements and the code of ethics will be compared to and evaluated with the second chapter recommendations and concepts within Strategic Management: Concepts and Cases by Fred R. David. Starbucks does not have a vision statement but rather a mission statement in conjunction with a value statement of sorts. Interestingly, Starbucks mission statement is fairly far removed from coffee, their main source of profit and business venture. It states: “To inspire and nurture the human spirit – one person, one cup and one neighborhood at a time” (Starbucks.com, 2013). While the statement is inspiring, as a mission statement it fails when held to the standards put forth by Fred David. Although the mission statement for Starbucks addresses some of these, it only lightly highlights some and completely misses others. According to Strategic Management Concepts and Cases, a mission statement must satisfy/address nine concepts (David, 2011): 1) Customers – Addressed by reference to nurturing...

...Goals & Objectives, Customer Analysis, and Target Market & Positioning Nan Zhang, Thai Tran, Hollyann Joyner I. Marketing Goals and Objectives A. Have largest market share in US coffee Industry * Objective 1: opening 3000+ net new stores in America by 2017 Starbucks will open more than 3000 stores in 48 states in US depends on population density. High population area like New York and Washington should open more than other states. And US is the largest market for Starbucks, and it’s brand name is well known, open more stores, and have an intensive distribution, so when consumer thirsty or tired, they can find a Starbucks next to them. * Objective 2: US market revenue grow by 12% in 2014. At least half of the new stores are expected to be in the strong, rapidly growing U.S. market, and in 2012, the new store revenue grew by 9 percent. Starbucks should focus on their loyalty program and advertising activities, so people could always see it in TV or internet. So sale will increase gradually. So Starbucks expect higher revenue 12 percent in 2014 is reasonable and possible. B. China on track become second-largest market in 2014 * Objective 1:opening 1000 new stores in different provinces of China by 2016 China had an 8 percent growth in 2013, almost the same as America, Starbucks has a really good brand name, currently there are more than 3,000 stores in China, and they all located in major big cities, so Starbucks should open more in second...

Starbucks

...Starbucks Corporation Table of Contents Introduction Organizational Goals Symptoms of the Problem Diagnosis of the Problem SWOT Analysis Recommendations I. Introduction: In 1971, in Seattle, Washington, three entrepreneurs started the Starbucks Corporation. The primary business at this time was the selling of premium whole bean coffee in a single Seattle store. At the time, coffee consumption in the U.S. was on the decline and market dominance was established by the large supermarket brands. However, companies such as Starbucks, who began selling high quality specialty coffee, began to establish a following of loyal coffee enthusiasts. This niche market enabled Starbucks to expand into five stores that sold coffee beans, a roasting facility, and a wholesale business that served local restaurants. At this time, Starbucks did not serve coffee and would not be recognized as the company they are today. In 1982, Howard Schultz joined the organization as the manager of retail marketing and attempted to implement new ideas and a new business model for the organization. Schultz was inspired by the Espresso bars of Europe and saw the potential for establishing this type of European coffee culture in the U.S. market. Schultz’s idea was soundly rejected by the original owners and he left the organization and established a chain of coffee houses, themed after Italian café’s and they sold brewed Starbucks coffee. In 1987, Schultz bought Starbucks from the...

To say that Starbucks is merely a coffee shop is an enormous understatement. The chain is composed of over 20,500 stores located in 62 countries. Precisely 13,279 of them are located in the U.S. alone. (Starbucks Company Profile, 2012) The company features an array of hot and cold drinks as well as sandwiches and pastries. One of the overall goals of Starbucks is also to be a home away from home featuring comfortable couches, friendly barista’s, and an inviting atmosphere. Various paintings hang on the darkly painted walls. The newest, coolest, and relaxing music is always playing in the background. In a roundabout way, the entire store is designed to help one wind down after a long day’s work, mindlessly grab a cup of very expensive Joe, and engage in deep conversations with friends and total strangers in order to forget about the stressful elements of the outside world. For the most part the Starbucks objective has been...

Starbuck's Strategy and Internal Initiatives to Return to Profitable Growth

...Starbucks’ Strategy and Internal Initiatives to Return to Profitable Growth Arthur A. Thompson The University of Alabama ince its founding in 1987 as a modest nine-store operation in Seattle, Washington, Starbucks had become the world’s premier roaster and retailer of specialty coffees, with 8,812 company-owned stores and 7,852 licensed stores in more than 50 countries as of April 2010 and annual sales of about $10 billion. But the company’s 2008–2009 fiscal years were challenging. Sales at company-owned Starbucks stores open 13 months or longer declined an average of 3 percent in 2008 and another 5 percent in 2009. Company-wide revenues declined from $10.4 billion in fiscal year 2008 to $9.8 billion in fiscal year 2009. During fiscal 2009, Starbucks closed 800 underperforming company-operated stores in the United States and an additional 100 stores in other countries, restructured its entire operations in Australia (including the closure of 61 stores), and reduced the number of planned new store openings by more than 200. Starbucks’ global workforce was trimmed by about 6,700 employees. The company’s cost-reduction and laborefficiency initiatives resulted in savings of about $580 million. Exhibit 1 shows the performance of Starbucks’ company-operated retail stores for the most recent five fiscal years. In his November 2009 letter to company shareholders, Howard Schultz, Starbucks’ founder, chairman of the board, and chief executive officer, said: Two years ago, I expressed...
