...FIRST INDO-PAK WAR (1947-49) The first war between the two neighbours broke out soon after their independence in 1947. Armed Pathans from the North-West Frontier Province of Pakistan entered the territory of Maharaja Hari Singh of Kashmir, who was yet undecided on the issue of accession to either India or Pakistan. Indian military help was sought by the Maharaja to fend off the invasion. Forces arrived on October 27, after the Maharaja decided on accession of Kashmir to Indian Union. Despite early successes, the Indian Army suffered a setback in December because of logistical problems. Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (Azad Kashmir) troops forced Indian army to retreat from the border areas. Following spring, the Indian side mounted another offensive to recapture some of the ground that it had lost. As the conflict escalated, the India realised the war could not be ended unless Pakistani support to occupied Kashmir forces was stopped. Accordingly, India filed a complaint against Pakistan at the United Nations on December 31, 1948, despite some opposition from within the Cabinet. In August, the UN Commission for India and Pakistan called for an end to hostilities with a truce, to be followed by a referendum for self-determination among Kashmiris. Both the parties agreed to the UN resolution. The UN Security Council eventually brought about a ceasefire between Pakistani and Indian troops on January 1, 1949. In all, 1,500 soldiers died on each side during the war, which left...

Most Influential Person

...Narrowing down to on person who had had an impact on my life is a difficult task, and one that requires a lot of thought. There have been many, but as I travel back through my memories, one person stands out above the rest, my mother. Whether in the classroom or at home, that one individual continuously shines. She knows how to help me when a problem arises, she is there to pick me up when I fall, and she is there as my biggest supporter when all is going well. She always seems to know when to push me or when to just step back and allow me to learn life lessons. One example of her driving me to do my best is a time that I had an extremely tough exam in Chemistry. This was a must pass test and to make it worse, it was over a chapter where I struggled. I came close to giving up and failing the test, but somehow my mom knew I was fighting this battle. She came to me and explained how giving up would interfere with my dream of going to college. It might not keep me out of college, but it would set my standards lower than they needed to be. My mom did not force me to study, but instead, she allowed me to make a decision that would effect me right then and possibly in the future. My mom has made a huge impact in my life in such a positive way. She has pushed me to where I am now. Through her example and our many talks, I have learned that hard work and perserverance can and will take you a long way in this world. I did pass that...

Communication Breakdown

...fresh the carrots tasted. We’ve just moved to a new place, just south of the lake where my brother and I learned to swim. Although our old home was destroyed unexpectedly by a bunch of men in hats, we were adjusting well to our new place. The grass was soft and the hills were lightly capped with white snow. It was in between winter and spring, my favorite time of the year. Jimmy and I were on our way to the pasture to find hay for our beds. Suddenly, I saw a quick flash and heard a crisp crack! Oh no, not again. “Jimmy run, go home!” I screamed to my little brother as I fell to the ground. Skeptically, my brother ran south. I lay on the ground with tears in my eyes. A sharp pain overcomes my body as I concentrate on breathing. I think back on all the times in my life that I’ve been scared or hurt. This is definitely the worst thing that has ever happened to me. I start to worry that I may not make it out of this jam alive, when I see a human in an orange vest triumphantly marching towards me. Thinking quickly, and bravely I might add, I use all my might to force myself up off of the ground. As the man in the orange vest raises his hunting tool at me, I dart off behind two large oak trees. One shot! Two shots! Good thing this guy is really a lousy shot. I run and I run fast, but before I do I stare the man right in the eyes. If he could only realize that I have a mind, a soul of my own. Surely he thinks I’m some kind of inferior being who has no sense of right or wrong...

Little Story

...In a dark room filled with stuffed animals, was me in my bed. Being half asleep, the illness bothered me. With fever ache and painful throat, I could barely open my eyes to feel myself. The back of my eyes balls was boiling, my throat as dry as the tree branches, I want to call for help. Help from my mother, father, anyone out there. I tried to sit up, my legs was too numb to move, every inch of muscles was stiffen, like I was mummified. The sound of the cracking stairs alarmed me; I turned my head slowly towards the door, waiting for the angel to save me from this sick body. The light beam shined through the cracks of my door, my eyes so sensitive I had to look away for a moment. The door slowly opened as I looked back, a warmth and caring face appeared, she walked over to my bed, gave me a tap on the head, and sat down closely next to me. Her voice was so soft I could hear my heart beat; the feeling was very comfortable I wanted to fall asleep again. As I start closing my eyes, she held me up against her, sitting up and half lying in her arms, she put a thin straw through my dry lips, I began sipping on the straw like a baby drinking milk. I didn’t know what it was, but I just started drinking. Only realizing it to be warm and comforting, the straw was slowly taken out from my mouth, she held me down on the bed, tucked me well under the sheets. Without any notice, I fell asleep as she quietly exits the room. I woke up from the noise around me, found myself lying on the...

Someone Who Influenced My Life

...Why would an author of a book influence me so much? It is because Daniel Quinn has written "My Ishmael" in such a beautiful way that what he's thinking comes across to you like as though you're having a conversation in person with him. He uses a talking Gorilla as a means to convey his points of view on how the world is in a degenerative mode and though I felt this strange at first, it became clear later as to why he used a Gorilla in the first place. The Gorilla here represents nature's voice and is a reminder that we need to look for ways to communicate with nature, first hand. This was the first eye opening aspect from the author. The second was the author's penchant for coming up with brilliant stories to derive and communicate his point to the reader. Instead of driving in his philosophies by pure theory would have been boring and heavy, but the author uses wonderful and thought provoking stories to do the same, so effectively. The first was the simple concept of food kept under lock and key. This is a practice that comes so naturally to us, but he brings out why this is a very unnatural way of things. For early man, what grew in the world belonged to everyone in the society, and to put it under lock and key is to basically create a working class who will do tasks, useful or useless, in order to earn their bread. Ishmael's (the name of the gorilla) teachings turn toward the subject of formal education, which he argues is merely a way to keep children out of the work...

...Tôi đang ngồi ở sân bay đà nẵng chờ máy bay để vào TpHCM học. Tối nay, lớp học IT Management bắt đầu.

Every day, she wears high-heels to work, and even runs a fashion chain under her name. For many, she was the influential icon of American culture in the late 20th century. Until now, I dare say that her image is still very potent worldwide. Who is she? Never before has she ever starred in a Hollywood movie or performed at a famous fashion show. Surprisingly, she never exists in real life and she is literally a toy. Yes, it can hardly be any other toy but Barbie. Nowadays, girls can be seen wearing Barbie clothing, using Barbie perfume, carrying Barbie backpacks, and sleeping in Barbie pajamas, not to mention cosmetics, sneakers etc. (Morgenson 1991, 66). ...Kimberly Tucker, Chris Salt, Ashley Solomon Case 7: Mattel: Overcoming Marketing and Manufacturing Challenges 11/01/2010 Marketing Management 6800 Section 004 The Problem: The problem surrounding Mattel Inc., one of the world’s largest toy companies, is their mismanagement of international subcontractors and vendors and the production of certain toys (the manufacturing process), as well as their inability to adapt their marketing strategy or product to the constantly changing “demographic and socioeconomic trends” (Ferrell, et. all 466). This is supported by Mattel’s legal battle with Carter Bryant and MGA, their forced recall of certain toys that were manufactured overseas, and the increasing rate at which traditional toys are becoming less appealing to today’s young audience. Essentially, Mattel’s mismanagement and oversight lead to violations in terms of ethical and social responsibilities and safety standards. Issues Relevant to the Problem: Mattel’s problem of mismanagement can be divided into several issues that need to be considered: legal issues, international supply chain issues, and an increase in technology-based toys. In regards to legal issues, Mattel has been involved in prolonged litigation with Carter Bryant and MGA over a breach of an employment contract and copyright infringement. Due to Mattel’s poor management of its overseas manufacturers, in which unauthorized subcontractors and third-party suppliers were hired and unsafe materials used, several...
