Olatoye, R. A. - Institute of Education, Olabisi Onabanjo University,
Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, Nigeria E-mail: kingdemola@yahoo.com Abstract This study compared study habit, self-concept and science achievement of students in public and private junior secondary schools in Ogun State, Nigeria. Twelve secondary schools were randomly selected from Egba and Ijebu divisions of the state. A sample of three hundred and sixty (360) students participated in the study. Three research instruments were used to collect data. There was no significant difference in study habit and selfconcept of students in public and private schools. However, private school students performed significantly better than their public school counterparts in integrated science (t = 3.400, p<0.05). In both public and private schools student study habit and self-concept combined together and singularly predicted science achievement. Counsellors should encourage students to study and also train them on how to improve their self-concept in order to improve science achievement. Key Words: Study habit, self-concept, science achievement, public and private schools, junior secondary schools. Draftinging Skills Reflection

...in this class my skills have greatly improved and have been reinforced. The drafting process for the profile and research paper assignments have taught me alot about where and how I need to improve my writing abilities. During the profile assignment I had some difficulty expanding on the information I was given during my interview and was just listing off the facts about who I interviewed. I fixed this initial rush job by slowing down and expressing her feelings and experiences in greater detail. If I had more time I might have interviewed my teacher again to get more details to add to my project specifically more on her initial experiences coming to the US. The research paper was probably the most difficult drafting process that I have had yet this semester. While autism was a subject that I had a lot of experience and passion...

Communication And Writing Class Analysis

...In this class, the vocabulary words that I had to define are now apart of my personal dictionary. So now, when I talk to anyone, I have a choice of words to go to. Instead of having a limited number of words to use at all times, learning these new words allow me to replace them. It’s not about trying to impress others by using bigger or fancy words rather than using the “go to’s”, rather than bettering yourself vocally. Also, when communicating with others using these new words learned, I can pass the knowledge to my peers and help them further their...

...Thesis Statements Sunderman/English 1A Adapted from http://www.dartmouth.edu/~writing/resources/students/ac_paper/develop.html Why Is a Thesis Statement So Important? Good question. As we’ve stated in class, our goal as writers is to give information to our readers that is interesting and easily understood. The thesis statement is typically that one sentence that asserts the main point, and controls and structures the essay. Without a strong, thoughtful thesis, your paper might seem unfocused, weak, and not worth the reader’s time. How Do I Write a Good Thesis Statement? A good thesis statement will have the following characteristics: 1. A good thesis statement will make a claim. You need to develop an interesting perspective on a topic that you can support and defend. This perspective must be more than an observation. “America is violent” is an observation. “Americans are violent because they are fearful” posits an interesting perspective on violence in America. It gives a possible reason WHY America is violent—a reason that can be supported and defended with specific examples. You want to make sure that your claim is not too broad, and that you can successfully defend and support it in the required number of pages. “Disease has shaped human history” is an impossibly large thesis. It would be better narrowed down to a specific disease, a specific time period, and a specific way (or ways) that disease has shaped human history. “In the mid-1980s, AIDS...
