Why I Joined Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps

To give a little history on Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC), it is a Federal program sponsored by the United States Armed Forces in high schools across the United States. The program was originally created as part of the National Defense Act of 1916 and later expanded under the 1964 ROTC Vitalization Act. I joined JROTC because I wanted to become a better person. One day while talking to my father I asked him how he became the discipline man that he is today. My father stated when he joined the Army, he had no other choice. He stated the Army conditions you to become well disciplined and a self starter. My mother always drilled in me to be respectful and value myself and others. My father was the first person to tell me about JROTC, he said I should look into it since I was a rising 9th grader and that’s exactly what I did. I researched JROTC and was amazed to see it would be able to give me everything I was looking for value wise. JROTC enables you to learn and appreciate the ethical values and principles that inspire good citizenship, to develop leadership potential, while getting my education. JROTC also encourages and helps you develop a logical way of thinking and to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing. It helps you to appreciate the importance of physical fitness in maintaining good health. JROTC helps you to understand the importance of high school graduation for a successful future, and learn about college and other advanced educational and employment opportunities. The Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) program prepares high school students like myself for leadership roles while making them aware of their rights, responsibilities, and privileges as American citizens. The JROTC curriculum emphasizes citizenship, character development, leadership development and community service. And it also develops the skills necessary to work effectively as a member of a team.

Last Time My Mother Overdosed

...last time my mom overdosed was the last time I was with her. I still remember this day like it was yesterday. It was almost the worst day in my life. My day started out just how any other day would. I woke up and got me and my little sister breakfast. Then I went to see what my mother was doing. I couldn’t find her at all I looked all over. I went in to her room. She was asleep and I couldn’t get her awake, which then wasn’t a big deal because she was hard to wake up. But then a couple hours later I tried to wake her up. She wouldn’t wake up. I was shaking her and slapping her hand. I had my twin sister try to wake her up. She couldn’t get her up. Then I called my great grandma, she came right there. She only lived a mile down the road. When she arrived she went in and tried to wake her up. She had no luck. So then my great grandma started crying. She then called my grandma she came as soon as she could which was like ten minutes. When she got there she went right to my mom’s room. She was furious. She knew what was going on. My mother had overdosed. She had been over dosing for awhile now. My grandma tried to wake her up she couldn’t. She called the town cop chief, she told him what was going on and he came and he brought the ambulance. When the chief got he sat down with my grandma on the front porch and talked to her about the situation and how long she had been overdosing. Meanwhile the emt’s were prepping my mother to take her to the hospital. I was holding my little...

My Time at Bj's

...My Time at BJ’s After getting off of work my wife and I were looking for a restaurant to sit down and eat at. Being that it was late our selection was limited so we came to the conclusion of going to BJ’s Restaurant and Brew house. The restaurant was first opened in 1978 and was originally just for deep dish pizza. BJ’s added the brewery in 1996 and since then new menus and new beers have been added (2012). The content in this paper will focus on three criteria for evaluation. First being the variety and presentation of the food they serve, second the cost and prices of the food and drinks they serve and third the customer service of the waiters and host. The first criterion used to evaluate BJ’s is the variety and presentation of the food that they serve. When they bring the food out to you the presentation is excellent, the lay out of the food on the plate was great, from the drizzle of the sauce to the placement of the food on top of each other. The food was also good with nice size portions, the plates are a good size and the food covers the whole plate so they make sure that you don’t go home still hungry many times you need a to go plate. They also have a great variety of food on the menu ranging from pizza which they were founded on to jambalaya and hamburgers. The seasoning of the food was a negative; there food was very spicy and hot, you have to keep a cold drink to cool down your mouth. The second criterion used to evaluate BJ’s is the cost of the food and drinks...

...Case-In-Point - Influenza Pandemics Past and Future Julian H. SCI/362 August 9, 2011 D. Lenz Case-In-Point Influenza Pandemics Past and Future “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it” (SANTAYANA, 1905) Unintended consequences of humankind’s activities that have led to the spread of the influenza virus during flu season are the lack of dispersing of the vaccine to the poor and homeless, non restriction of travel to or from known areas with high infection rates, and the quarantining of the infected in industrialized areas. Review of the past influenza epidemics and pandemics have shown that the reaction time is far too slow when dealing with such a communicable disease. In the US, the ill are not forced to stay home to prevent the spread of the disease. During the past H1N1 outbreak, travel was not restricted to and from areas with a high infection rate, nor was the border sealed. Scientific or technological activities that are improving the situation are in the area of research and study of influenza. This study has allowed scientists to develop vaccines that often aid in preventing severe illness or death. There are two forms of the vaccine, an inactivated (or killed virus) vaccine delivered via needle intramuscularly, or a weakened live virus delivered via nasal spray. These vaccines are updated every year. Study of influenza is done year round in over 130 national centers in over 101 countries (CDC, 2011) The application of the scientific...

My Time and Purpose Under Heaven!

...This is my season under heaven my time to grow, to struggle, to trust and to fight. This is my time to be born, to be born to be just Kisha not daughter, not sister, not wife, not mom. Those are roles I know how to play. I can resume those roles at a later date, but now it’s time to look into the mirror of my heart. It is time for me to put away the persistent little voice that says “you can not do it”. This is time to only worry about “what I can do”. This is my time to plant the seeds of hope. I choose were to plant and I choose to rejoice in the harvest. This is my time to heal. This is my time for my family to heal. I will always embrace the power of healing. This is my time to tear down fear and walls of regret. I will clear the ground where they once stood and build new bridges that would shelter me from misfortune. No more time for mourning or for weeping I will embrace my life. Now is my time to laugh and smile. I will welcome the humor and absurdity of everyday living. This is my time to dance gracefully. This is my time to see myself through my journal of my life. It is my time to ponder on the bits of memory that this writing process has surprised me with. People, places and feeling that had been long forgotten. This is my time to search my mind, my heart, my soul for the stories that need to be...

The most folly thing I did that same night was drink soda when I obviously had to get a good night’s rest because I was leaving for Mexico for the first time in my life. My parents along with my siblings had to take down our suitcases into the truck. The car ride to the airport was really harmonious because it wasn’t that far, plus I was really excited to meet my family over there. At the airport we meet with two of our relatives. It was a devastation my parents couldn’t go with us due to the fact that they didn’t have papers. After a while of waiting it for the airport workers to check our luggage we had to say our goodbyes to my parents. My parents told me and my siblings to...

How to Manage My Family Time

...How to manage my Family Time Arbra Jones GEN 200 Barbara White How to Better Manage my Family Time For most adults twenty-four hours in a day comes and goes faster than they would like. Most days start before the sun rises and ends well into the night with little time in between to notice the possible change in weather. Juggling the responsibilities of family, work, social life and for a growing majority school, requires skills one would normally find in a traveling circus. A person could spend the better part of their day away from home fulfilling work related responsibilities and return only to find there is not enough time for family. So how can a person find the time to complete so many tasks in twenty four hours and still have time to spend with their family? I have learned in order to make sure I have enough time during the day for all my responsibilities as well as time for my family, I must utilize proper time management skills. One of the first steps in proper time management is creating a strategy where goals are planned out. I first need to determine what my daily goals are and create a schedule prioritizing them by order of importance. According to Time-Management-Guide.com, “proper time management starts with prioritizing goals”. Once I create my daily list of goals I can determine which goals will have the most priority. For goals that must be carried out day to day, an example being helping my children complete homework requirements, they would...

Personal Narrative: My First Time

...Let me just say that it wasn't my first time here, but DEFINITELY MY LAST. Came in with a friend at 3am on (1/16/18)and we decided to order a pepperoni pie. The guy took my card when it came time to pay and mumbled the price that I would be charged. Now I know that they are on the pricier side but I looked at their price sign next to the oven, above the register and it said $5 a slice and $34 a pie, so I figured it would be $34, I got the receipt and I got charged $48 for a pepperoni pie... When I got home the next day I decided to call other artichoke locations and they all told me a pie is $34, after trying to get in touch with this location for a week with their phone lines being busy, I called again today (1/20/18) and when one of the guys picked up I told him that I got charged $48 for a pie and to my surprise he seemed in disbelief....

My Life to Save

...Prologue I leaned over the toilet for the fourth time this morning spilling whatever was left in my stomach. I dry heaved for the next five minutes trying to rid whatever was giving me this ill feeling. Once I finished I wiped the sweat off my forehead and laid back against my cold tub. It felt good against my warm skin. I removed my sweat drenched shirt and just laid against the tile floor. I have never experience such pain and nausea in my life. I didn’t want to think about the many possibilities that could be wrong with me. "Ki you alright?" asked my eight year old brother behind my bathroom door. "Yes boo just go get me a bottle of water." I could hear him scurrying off down the stairs to the kitchen. I tried my best to stand up but I just felt too weak. All of a sudden my body grew very tired and I couldn’t get my body to move. I heard my door open and a scream. "Mom, Dad hurry!" yelled my brother Jasone. I didn’t understand why he was screaming until I followed his horrified eyes down to my floor and there was blood everywhere. I slowly reached up to touch my nose and I felt the blood all over my hands and I knew something was definitely wrong. My brother rushed over to me and held my head in his lap as he cried. I tried to reach up and touch him but it all hurt too much. "Lord please I’m not ready to die." I said to myself. "Mom!!" my brother cried out again. "Jasone what is you doing in your sister room and screaming on-" she couldn’t continue her sentence as she...

My Personalities Trait

...person is focusing on something different, thinking of something different, and noticing something different. That is why every person has a story to tell, and it is why we can learn from every single person. And this essay is about my short autobiography, which can give you an indication of my personal story. I came into this world on the windy morning of October 15, 1990. I was born in Cua Viet, a small town in Vietnam. I am the 5th child among the 5 children of my parent. I grew up and spent almost my whole life in my country. Now, I am the second year student in Business Accounting- the 2 year program. I have been through many life-changing situations in past 3 years. These situations have had both positive and negative impacts to me. My goals from 5 years ago compare to my current goals are totally different. After finishing 12th grade, I just wanted to become a Mathematics teacher, so I went to Hue University and tried my best to achieve the goal. However, when I was the 2nd year student of the Hue University, I found that I was no longer interested in becoming a teacher. Hence, I dropped the school and wanted to get a better education in Canada and seek opportunities in accounting. Since then, my life has changed. On one hand, starting my new life in a strange country is so hard. When I just came, I faced many difficulties, such as the language, the weather and the life style. Firstly, language was a big matter when I first came. Speaking was one of the linguistic problems...

Love Letter

...sleeping the whole day and I got so many thoughts playing on my mind so I choose to rise get the laptop and type. 1. Second to my final destination ( … Well this is not a horror film; this destination I’m talking about is the force or factor that makes me go and face every life’s circumstances I am facing. My ultimate dream is to become a flight attendant, cabin crew, flight crew or whatever they call this. Yes, I’ve been dreaming to become one someday and I am trying to give my very best for this not to become an unclear vision. I want this to manifest, I want this to happen in my life in every good ways or means I can. As I’ve said on my recent posts, I love to go somewhere, I love to experience different culture, and I want to meet new and different people. There are some times in my life when I face mirror, stand classically and gracefully and try to imitate flight attendants posture and speaking. I used to act like there are passengers and I am orienting them with safety procedures inside the plane. To train to become a flight attendant costs so much, that’s why my parents wasn’t able to send me to those schools practicing this course. But I’ve got this what they called life’s principle. I believe with all my heart that nothing is definitely impossible that my future has been planned and decided. I just love the thought that God is faithful, with His words, His promises and plans. I trust Him with this. This is my heart’s very secret petition to heaven and to Jesus. His...

Persuasive Essay On Death Donation

...The soft beeps of my alarm clock bring me out of my slumber almost immediately, causing a slight jolt to erupt from my body as I sit up in bed. With my eyes half closed, my arm juts out and fumbles with the various objects on my end table until it finally hits that sweet spot on the small, yet loud, box keeping me from sleeping any longer. A light groan escapes my lips, followed by a quick yawn. Sundays are always considered to be the worst, in my own subjective opinion. I stretch my arms out of either side of my body as my legs swing to the right and off of my bed. I give my legs a moment to relax, my hands finding themselves by my hips before finally pushing me off of the bed and onto my feet. As per usual, I trudge out of my room and into...
