No matter what someone may tell you, writing is a critical skill in daily life. Whether you’re writing a business email or a text message, it’s important to understand the fundamentals of English. As writers, we all have our strengths, weaknesses, and goals. Nobody is perfect, and that’s okay. English is one of the hardest languages in the world, after all.

I think I’ve always been good at allowing my voice to flow in the essays I write. It’s a very tricky skill, but after years of writing for different classes, It’s a skill that kind of develops on its own. The different between an okay essay and a great essay is being able to hear and understand the voice of the writer who wrote that essay. If you allow your voice to come through, …show more content…
Teachers always try to be open when it comes to writing assignments, but sometimes that isn’t the best. The possibility for indecision comes with a wide topic range, and the essays I have to come up with myself generally aren’t as good as one with an assigned topic. Why is this the case? With an assigned topic, it’s easy to sit down at a computer and write. You know your angle, so you write as much as possible and edit it later. It makes the process so much easier. When you have to come up with a topic on your own, you also have to come up with how that topic will play out. Where should the scene be set? What should your writing style be? Sure, coming with a topic on your own is more fun, but it can also bury you if you can’t set up your writing …show more content…
In the world of computers that we live in today, it’s easy to go weeks with minimal paper and pencil use. I think the handwriting of my generation has suffered because of this. We can all type on a computer at incredible speeds, but when it comes to writing something by hand, handwriting can be an impairment. Ever since I was little, I’ve been told that my handwriting is atrocious. I’m not going to lie, it is. It’s a blend of cursive and quick lines that only a doctor can read. When I took my SAT this past May, I had to work on my handwriting a lot to get it to an acceptable level. You can lose a significant number of points on the SAT if your handwriting is bad, which was a major struggle for me. That’s when I realized that handwriting is a problem for many high school students, and it’s only getting

Cause and Effect Essay

Writing is an integral skill that enables a person articulate their ideas in a commonsensical manner. Although I am not a good writer, as I would like to be, I have made tremendous improvements over the years. Several factors have influenced my writing ability to the level I have reached currently. Primarily, my family background has a significant effect in my mastery of writing. I saw people writing at home, as my parents read and wrote frequently. My parents have an inherent respect and value for writing. They regularly expressed a love for writing and implored us to read and write as much as possible. We had a small book library at our home, comprising of newspapers, novels, and research books. Home libraries have a significant influence on development of an interest in reading and writing (Bonci, 2010). Initially, I only read magazines, but it was only after I started reading longer books with chapters, that I developed the skill to organize ideas. For that reason, my family background has had a significant effect in the writing skills. In addition, my school experience was prominent in making...

Self-Assessment

...As we all know writing and excel knowledge is needed for most or all classes we take, work at our daily jobs, or projects we want to dive into. In essence, not everyone has the skills to write a prefect paper or tackle a pivot chart on excel. Many students, such as me, who have decided to take on a new journey towards earning their MBA, have been given a tool by Capella to evaluate what they do and do not know about their writing skills and excel knowledge. The results will lead us to a better tomorrow, it will enhance our writing skills to think another a more critical level, and use the excel spreadsheets more knowingly. This tool was a reminder that I need to focus more on my prewriting skills, use my time management skills, and explore more into using an excel sheet. My overall composite score in writing was at a moderate level. The score was evaluated by five elements: focus and meaning, content and development, organization, language use and style, and lastly mechanics. With talking to the enrollment counselor and the coach for the course, I was advised that writing was a huge factor in the MBA courses. I knew before starting the course, my writing skills needed some refreshing. In taking the assessment it only proved my point invalid. I found that I needed to establish and control the main ideas to my audience so they have a better understanding of what I’m trying to say. The ideas in my writing were not fully developed and did not specify enough clarity to...

Reflective Essay: What I Learned In My Writing Class

...During the entire spring semester of 2017 I have used my time to focus on bringing my writing skills up. My skills have gotten better in the aspect of morale, explaining, and focus. My last writing class was over a year ago and that was more of a research paper more than an actual focus on my writing skills. What I mean by that is I wasn’t just writing down just an explanation from a book but instead I was using this chance to experience a different in writing assignments. My first week back in writing wasn’t my best week due to my lack in practicing my skills but with just a week or two it came back to me. I started to remember to write out the end plan instead of writing what just comes to mind; which usually got me lost halfway through. The class was also a...

Metaphor of Me as a Writer

...My writing is as good as a blind man’s driving. I can create what I think is a masterpiece, but what the reader thinks of it, most of the time, is yet to be desired. Writing requires an individual with not only good foresight, but an individual with great intellectual skills and creativity. My writing skills have become a significant challenge for me, like my driving skills, which I believe worsen due to the Cheetah’s speed I have to encounter on the streets. I am accustoming to writing simple, non-descriptive, age appropriate pieces. Now I am expected to create fluent, thought provoking creations. How is this possible when I have to endure all spectrums of parts of speech? Writing is not only an act that I hate, but it is an act that I have to do almost every day in order to interact with the linguistic world. Despite the fact that I have been writing most of my life, I have not gotten any better than a blind man’s driving no matter how much effort I put into it. My writing has left much to be desired. There could be a guideline, an outline or clear directions and I would still find ways to create a questionable piece. Did he even understand what I am asking, or did he even see the topic? The questions the cops would ask me after pulling me over for my continued stupid mistakes I make while driving, “Are you not accustom to road signals or is it your understanding of the road code that needs more to be desired?” I spend time and time again trying to express in...

Aed/202 Reading and Writing Stragies

...AED/202 Reading and Writing Development Sandy Mackey June 28, 2013 Kristen Weiss Reading and Writing Development As a future educator I believe that reading and writing is the utmost import thing in a child’s education. Without these two skills a child will not be able to succeed in school. For my essay, I chose two age groups that I want to teach; middle childhood, ages six through ten, and early adolescence, ages ten through 14. The reason I chose these two developmental ages is because I believe that children enjoy learning; they are like sponges, always trying to absorb as much as possible. The reading development in middle childhood children and early adolescent childhood children seem somewhat different. Middle childhood children start by identifying letters and matching letters with individual sounds, knowing what a word is, and interpreting spaces and punctuation are the earliest building blocks for reading skills (www.education.com). Early adolescent childhood children, usually do not have an issue with reading; they can identify vocabulary words in a book and sound out the words. Children of this stage usually enjoy reading. Writing skills for both middle and early adolescent children develop in the same way as their reading skills. Middle childhood children are more focused on what they are writing, their spelling, spacing, punctuation, and coherence has improved (www.education.com). As for the early adolescent children...
