Now that Dessalines is dead, Haiti is now split in two with two different leaders, Christophe and Pétion. This plunged Haiti into a period of more change and political maneuvering, this lasted for 12 years. Christophe assumed that he would become the ruler to supersede Jacques I , Pétion on the other hand had a different idea in mind. On Pétion portion of Haiti the people basically tricked and saddled him with a constitution that left him with no power, all of the power was basically given to the senate, of which Pétion was the head. Christophe declared the State of Haiti February 17, 1807, shortly after, Pétion was elected president of the Republic of Haiti. These two Haiti’s were very different, on Christophe’s end they were flashy and Pétion
