Does Facebook Have Generally Positive Psychological Effects?

...Does Facebook Have Generally Positive Psychological Effects? Does Facebook Have Generally Positive Psychological Effects? Valerie Helfman PS101 Introduction to Psychology Does Facebook have a generally positive psychological effect? Yes, Studies have shown that humans are social creatures and we like to make new connections and to communicate our opinions and to listen to others, and through regular Facebook status updates that pop up in our friends news feeds or vice a versa we are able to do this. Facebook use has become a part of millions of people’s daily routine, whether it is to update a status, reply to a message or even to read the News. Facebook has provided both positive and negative psychological effects. Negatively, Facebook has provided a site which can be used for cyberbullying along with an extreme influence on education. And because people may only post positive status, people tend to get the impression that all is well in their lives and they have no problems. And this could lead to feeling that their lives are boring and sad as and recent studies indicated as to how children and teenagers feel because of this. Facebook is also a distracting site that can make you lose track of time and distract the mind from more important matters. . . Facebook has generally provided positive psychological effects on the multiple sections of society. Positively, Facebook has revolutionized the...

Through the years Facebook has had some tough competition and has seen many ups and down’s from various lawsuits, but it is still arguably the most popular social networking site used today. (Facebook, 2012) Marketing Opportunity - This site would be an exceptional marketing opportunity to market clothing to college students across the globe or around the world. This would be achievable because of the popularity of Facebook. As we already know, Facebook is used by many if not most of these students, so I would suggest that they branch out and try to use this opportunity. Categorization of Opportunity - Home run Risk of Opportunity - The problem with this opportunity is that it is such a popular site that the students may just want to use it to talk and associate with current and new friends and would not want to...

Psychological Effects of Facebook

...topic that we have chosen to research will be considering the psychological effects that Facebook has on the male population here at the University of Kentucky. The population being focused on will be a mix of students from the freshman and sophomore classes. To be a little more specific, the main research question we want to answer is, “Does Facebook have a positive or negative effect on the male population?” Basically, we will discover if using Facebook causes men to see themselves in a more positive way or causes men to see themselves in a more negative way. The reason for choosing to focus only on the male population is because the vast majority of articles and research we have found online involves studying the psychological effects Facebook has on people, namely concentrating on the female population. This presents us with the chance to broaden the scope of information available on the subject at hand. Focusing on just one of the two populations also allows us to narrow the topic down to one group, which in return gives us the opportunity to give a more detailed response to the question. By delving deeper into the subject, we will be able to better understand the effects on men rather than just scratching the surface by having research that is too broad. As our world shifts more toward the digital and electronic age, we must be certain of what psychological effects can occur through the use of electronics and the Internet. Primary concerns are changes in the mental...

Effects of Facebook on Children

...Effects of Facebook on Children Facebook! “Everyone and their mother” has a Facebook account; with over 800 million users (Facebook, 2011), even children ranging from grades 4-12 access the popular website. A lot of people know the risks of using Facebook and still allow their children to have access to it. The social website does have positive features for children like it allows for the development of “social capital,” or the amount of friends he/she has, can make the child feel important and loved, and it also can give the child the opportunity to get involved in social events and charities in their community (Smith, 2011). Even though there are positives for minors, there are also severe negatives that go along with it; for example, using Facebook wastes a lot of the child’s time, they truly have no privacy, and it acts as a moral disconnect. First, being one who uses a lot of technology and studying in the technology field, I know how much time can be spent in front of a monitor for countless hours doing absolutely nothing. An article written by Fodeman & Monroe (2009) states, “We have concerns for children and teens today growing up in a world where they are wired 24/7 without a break.” This means that because the Facebook website is live at any given time and day; therefore, without parents controlling their kids’ time for computer usage, they can be on the website for numerous hours at a time. The authors also write in their article, “For some, it even raises their...

...problems in society. There are some who oppose this idea and others who are on board with the notion. Social media can have both a positive and negative effect on today’s society; it is up to the individual to decide the effect on them. In order to better understand what a social networking site is let us quickly review their history. In 1997 the first social networking site SixDegrees.com was founded (Procon, 2013). It is considered to be the first social networking site because it provided the opportunity to do basic functions such as connecting to friends and creating a personal space. Other sites quickly followed and advanced more rapidly then SixDegrees. These sites included: MySpace, Facebook, Pinterest, Google+, Twitter, and Friendster. Founded in 2002 Friendster is considered the site that popularized social networking in the United States (ProCon, 2013). Today it is estimated that Facebook has an average of one billion users a month (Smith, Segall, and Cowley, 2012).
