Violence and danger surrounds us even in the places we consider the most safe and sacred. From events such as what occurred in Aurora, Colorado to the tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut people all over are questioning how safe we really are. Sometimes in the realm of over reaction, people look at the tool as the culprit of the events, here is a look at how the tool appears to be used in the rest of the world. The above chart notes the gun ownership percentage per 100,000 people as compared to the murder rate percentage per 100,000 people. The relation between these numbers can be represented by the formula y=.0919x2+0.3676x, which is would be considered an approximate representation of the above graph. While it’s not exact, the overall point is the number of guns owned by a population does not necessarily affect the murder rate in a society. Slovenia, for example, has a gun ownership rate of 5% per 100,000 people and a .001% murder rate per 100,000 people. Many would think that with a higher rate of ownership, the rate would be higher; however the rate does not appear to rise with the number of guns owned. ...Alternative Proposals for Tough Gun Control Law is the Solution As violence and crime rate continue to increase, debates on tougher gun control also continue to escalate. While it is a popular notion that more weapons mean more gun-related injuries, many people vehemently oppose restriction on their freedom to own guns. Tougher gun control is an issue that is seen as black and white, though it is not. It is true that these dangerous weapons entails greater responsibility on the owner’s part. What I don’t understand is that we immediately opt to either say yes or a definite no, while saying yes means completely banning civilians to obtain guns. We can still buy and acquire these weapons for personal defense, while at the same time following strict policies for check and balance. This is suggested by John Lott, who is an economist as well as political commentator. However, Garen Wintemute, the director of the Violence Prevention Research Program at the University of California, Davis, emphasized the negative effect of guns. On one hand, Wintemute believed that less guns lead to less violent crimes. On the other hand, Lott denied the direct relationship between crime rate and guns’ number and proposed that more concealed-handguns can actually deter crime. A common criticism of guns is that they stimulate more violent crime and this is what Wintemute (2004) tried to prove in his article, “Gun Control Laws Can Reduce Violent Crime” (p. 75). He (2004) explained that “firearms modify the consequences of crime” (p. 75). In other words, criminals find it easier to commit and complete crimes when they have guns. Wintemute (2004) took the example of robbery which is facilitated by guns and constituted of 44 percent of all violent crimes (p 75). A 1-year-old boy name Antiq Hennis was shot in the left side of his head on Sunday, September 1, 2013, on a Brooklyn street in the Brownsville area and ended up being pronounced dead at Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center where he was rushed shortly after the shooting. He was sitting in a stroller with his parents on the corner of Livonia Avenue and Bristol Street in the Marcus Garvey Village projects in Brownsville about 7pm that night. A witness name Gina Gamboa was in the Brownsville area when she heard the shooting and noticed that one man was running away from the scene and one man was just standing there and then left the scene. He then came back and noticed that the baby’s head was to the side and stroller was covered in blood. Police sources say that the bullets aimed to the 1-year-old boy was meant for his father, Anthony Hennis, and accidently hits the stroller and killed his son. Family members mentioned that Anthony, the little boy’s father has a record of more than 20 arrests and that they believe the shooting was payback from earlier when the father had a dispute with someone.
