He lived on a farm up until 1923 when his father decided to return to his previous occupation as a loan appraiser because farming was not providing the family with sufficient income. Tagging along with his father on some of the farm repossessions, he saw many families being turned out of their land. This instilled him with the importance of frugality at a young age. Growing up during the Great Depression meant that he had to work before and after school to help his family meet their financial needs. He milked the family cows every morning; his mother would bottle the milk while he was at school, and after football practice he would deliver the bottles. He also delivered newspapers, sold magazine and subscriptions, and raised and sold rabbits and pigeons. He still found time to become an Eagle Scout, making him the youngest Eagle Scout in Missouri history. With his father always travelling, his mother, Nan Walton, took on most of the work of raising, disciplining, and motivating Sam Walton. She had high ambitions for him. She read a lot and loved education, and insisted that he would go to college and make something of himself. His attributes were he extended his empire northward from the Persian Gulf to the Tigris and Euphrates River and west to the Mediterranean Sea. He united the area into one extensive empire, Mesopotamia, which in present day is known as Iraq. (Ancient Mesopotamia) Hammurabi created a list of rules and laws for the people of his empire to follow called “The Code of Hammurabi”. This is one of the oldest and most detailed documents in existence and gives insight as to how the members of Babylonian society lived. The code listed 282 rules for society to obey by and the consequences or guidelines for each member given their social status and their gender. There were rules of every category. From marriage and adultery, criminal acts such a stealing, property, and monetary trading. What’s interesting about this rulebook is the detail and coverage of the book. While in today’s world we may not follow rules such as “An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth” like the Code of Hammurabi, whose punishments for a crime were much more extravagant and gruesome at times. There was segregation in gender and social status. The topics addressed in the code are some of the same topics addressed that we, today, value and instill. Women who were raised with a lack of paternal authority can often face significant setbacks when dealing with everyday life issues. Promiscuity as a self-destructive behavior has substantial consequences often resulting in mental and physical suffering. This qualitative single case study was designed to explore the correlation of promiscuity- as a self-destructive behavior with women who were raised in single-mother households where there was a lack of paternal authority. A single intrinsic case study was used to explore one woman’s battle with promiscuity. The data obtained formed a narrative generated by the triangulation of psychoanalytical therapy sessions, a client intake form and the woman’s journal. A case analysis was performed and later reviewed by an attending mental health clinician. The results indicated the woman manifests the self-destructive behavior of promiscuity at the expense of poor self-esteem which directly correlates with a lack of paternal authority. The disruption of the woman’s psychosexual development in childhood negatively altered her self-image.
