Earlier in the day we swam down to the plethora of kids we were going to have and were deciding on what to name them. Coral my wife wanted at least one of the kids name to be Nemo. ...Aaron Liu Finding Nemo: A Loss of Innocence Throughout the movie, Finding Nemo, Marlin has to endure a myriad of hardships and obstacles in order to save his son. Because of this journey, Marlin also goes through many changes in attitude. Marlin’s first real loss of “innocence” occurred in the opening scene. It begins with Marlin and Coral admiring their new home and their abundance of eggs. Marlin is friendly, loving, and appears to be carefree; the exact opposite of his personality throughout the rest of the movie. Unfortunately, a barracuda attacks, knocking Marlin unconscious and killing Coral and all but one of the eggs. Marlin ends up naming the egg, Nemo, a name that his wife liked. Therefore, a main character’s loss of “innocence” is through a devastation of fantasy as it encounters a cruel reality. The opening scene showed the origins of Marlin’s worrisome and fearful personality. Before his loss, Marlin seemed carefree and cheerful, however due to the harshness of reality, he transforms into a stranger. Because of the barracuda attack, Marlin realizes the numerous amounts of potential disasters. Perseverance through strength and determination can be seen in our countries early foundation. It was perseverance that led to westward expansion for inexpensive land, and leads in an age of manifest density and shaped our country. Through perseverance the protagonist tries to get his son home and only succeeds because he continually reaffirms himself to “just keep swimming, just keep swimming”. Most people just need the right time and the courage to bring out their inner hero. The writer and philosopher Joseph Campbell wrote about the stages each hero goes through in their journey in a book called, The Hero with a Thousand Faces. In Finding Nemo, there is tragedy before there is hope. There is also comedy, adventure and suspense to keep the viewer on their feet. Marlin, a clown fish father and the hero, embarks on a journey to find his son, Nemo. Marlin’s wife dies protecting Nemo and his siblings when they are still eggs and are being attacked by an eel who is trying to eat them. After the attack, Nemo is the only egg left. Nemo survives, but is injured, which leaves him with a gimp fin. This leaves the excited and adventurous Marlin a very scared and timid clownfish. When Nemo is captured by a scuba diver, Marlin must swim from the Great Barrier Reef to Sydney, Australia to save him.
