Within a strategic plan, there are many components. They include the school’s vision and mission, strategies that meet the needs of the stakeholders, descriptions of the curriculum and instructional programs, the School Profile, and the school’s role in the larger community. ISLLC 2008 Standard 1: An education leader promotes the success of every student by facilitating the development, articulation, implementation, and stewardship of a vision of learning that is shared and supported by all stakeholders and ISLLC 2008 Standard 3: A school administrator is an educational leader who promotes the success of all students by ensuring management of the organization, operations, and resources for a safe, efficient, and effective learning environment both frame the plan in which I will develop. (Green, 2008 pgs.6,10-11) Background Pleasantville High School has about 1000 students. This school is located in a rural area where 75 percent of the students are Hispanic, 23 percent are Black, and 2 percent are Caucasian. This is an extremely poor area, and many of the students are involved in or exposed to gangs, violence, and poverty. Within the past three years, there have been six principals. However, little is known about the influence of changing norms and values on men’s role in ensuring women’s health during pregnancy and childbirth. This study from rural south-eastern Tanzania explores men’s and women’s discussions on men’s roles and responsibilities in prenatal care and links them to an analysis of norms and values at the household level and beyond. Data from eight focus group discussions with men and women were consensually coded and analysed using a qualitative content analysis. Four dimensions of norms and values, which emerged from analysis, bear upon men’s support towards pregnant women: changing gender identities; changing family and marriage structures; biomedical values disseminated in health education; and government regulations. The findings suggest that Tanzanian men are exposed to a contradictory and changing landscape of norms and values in relation to maternal health.
