In 2016, the idea of conceal and carry gun ownership is becoming more and more socially acceptable. If the person with the concealed firearm is doing what they should, nobody will know that they have their firearm. From 2011 to 2014 the number of conceal and carry permits increased from just over 4 million permits nationwide to over 11 million permits being issued by local governments. While that does seem like a small number compared to the over 325 million people in the country, the number of conceal carry permit increase between 1999 and 2011 was only 1.5 million permits.
One of the main weaknesses to a division solely purposed for conceal and carry is that not all 50 states have the ability to receive these permits. This means that there is a large portion of the population that will not be customers of yours no matter how successful the division is.
Since this an election year in the United States, many politicians will use gun control as a platform to run on. The large portion of the American public will also go to the polls and vote on their candidates based on their belief that we need to severely limit access to firearms.
With only a portion of states issuing conceal and carry permits, that leaves quite a bit of opportunity to expand your customer base through legislation and lobbying in congress to make states make the permits more and more available. This will increase the market size of the customer base.
The main threat to the success of a conceal and carry division is the competitors. As this market continues to get larger, the more and more competition will improve. Some competition can be even better because if they focus on non-firearm conceal and carry options such as holsters and other accessories that do not have legislation that they need to work with and that will increase their
