I have been given the task to design the telephone system for the company’s new location that is going to be built shortly. To accomplish this I first need to understand what kind of telephone system the company currently uses today. Which is The Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) is what most companies are running today. So when researching this system out I found out that there are several different components that make up the POTS system.
When the POTS system first started back in 1877 it was with Bell Telephone Company. Then it was one line one house which was a fixed –line system. Now everything runs to a central office and is distributed from there. The POTS system we have now starts out at your local telephone company’s office this is referred to as a central office. There are many lines coming out of the office going everywhere but one will get to our office so we could have service. The line that comes from the central office to our building will connect us to the system and that line will be a twisted pair cable (which is a copper cable). This will give us a local loop to the telephone company. In some remote location the telephone companies have to install remote sites to shorten loop lengths to provide better quality service for all rural areas. There are a few more things I would like to mention that is in the POTS system. The first is that it has long distance, which gives you the ability to call out of your geographical area. There are also all of the local exchange carriers which are telephone companies that provide service in the designated geographical area. Then all of this leads to what is called a point of presence (pop) this is where the long distance carriers meet up.
For the new telephone system I have looked a few different communication options and done a little research on each so I would like to share that with you now. The first is going to be Cellular and with this you are able to have voice and data. Both of these will be a digital signal which will give you a better quality of service and would make the company very mobile. If there were a user out and need to check something back at work the data would make it possible for them to use their smart phone to check whatever they needed. For the data side I have found this information as 2G technologies matured, it became clear that the cell phone could be used for many applications other than just carrying on a conversation. Many people were using their cell phones to access the Internet. To meet consumer need for data, a third generation (3G) of cell phone technology was introduced. 3G technologies offered higher data rates over 2G, paving the way for multimedia applications. Now that we have 4G the speeds are 10 or greater now. Voice: the first generation (1G) cell phones transmitted information in an analog format very similar to the way a fixed-line telephone transmits voice information from the subscriber to the central office. However, when the second generation (2G) cell phones entered the market, transmission shifted from analog to digital. With the 4G technology are almost crystal clear and much more reliable. The second is your telephone network topology there are four things I would like to go over about this. One is that there will be a demarcation point. This is a box that is either on or inside the building. The telephone company will run their cable to it and then it will be our responsibility to continue running the cable inside. The good thing about this is there is not a ton of equipment. There are different options that can be done; you can have the ONT, NIDs, or racks. The next part deal with the access to the network this is what basically connects our business to the outside world. Then once we have the network access and are out into the world we will enter into a metro network or a regional network. A metro network will take information from the local exchanges of a specific service provider and information from other independent service providers, and sends the information to the regional and long-haul/core networks. Now the regional network is really just a larger version of the metro network. It is responsible for collecting information from different metro networks.
Another topic I wanted to gather some information on other telecommunications network components and the first of those are cable television. There are also four topics that I looked at on this this first is broadcast television this is something that really did not see daylight until the 1950s. During that time the primary method to deliver television to the consumers was with radio waves. The television stations would broadcast the black and white signal from very large antennas. Then the end users would connect an antenna to their television sets to receive the single. The system still works today but it does have limitations. This also brought around the community antenna. Which was just an antenna placed on the highest point on top of a hill; then a copper cable carried the signal from the antenna to the users. There is also a network side to this as well two parts are the network access point and the network interface device. The network access point is a terminal that is located close to the homes or buildings that is services, and it also is a terminal that serves as a connection point for drop cable. Now the network interface device is a small box that is mounted to the outside of a house of building. This is a plastic box that has electronics inside of it and this will interface with existing cabling for television, telephone, and internet connectivity.
Telecommunication services have several acronyms so I would like to list a few and tell you a little about each. One is RBOCs this refers to a regional Bell operating company. In 1982, the U.S. government filed a suit against AT&T, which was considered a monopoly at the time. As a result, AT&T divested its local exchange carriers into seven “baby Bells,” or RBOCs, in 1984: Ameritech, Bell Atlantic, Bell South, NYNEX, Pacific Telesis, Southwestern Bell, US. There is An MSO is a multiple system operator, operating multiple cable television systems. Well-known MSOs in the United States are Time Warner Cable, Cablevision, and Comcast. An Internet service provider (ISP) is a company that provides access to the Internet. There is also something called triple-play is where one company will offer high-speed internet access, telephone service, and video services. Another is cloud computing is a way to increase the capabilities of a device or add new capabilities or services without making any hardware changes to the device. It typically allows the user to access these enhanced capabilities and services from any location in the world where there is Internet connectivity. Also there is something called unbundling it is where you have a package and you remove some options out then you are unbundling the package you signed on for.
