Case Study

1. Review the four principles of sex-linked inheritance listed just before the case study. Which individuals in figure 5.2 demonstrate principle 1?

Bill, Terry, Greg, and Jenny.

2. Which individuals in figure 5.2 represent principle 2?

Carl, Terry, and Greg.

3. Which individuals in figure 5.2 represent principle

Florence, Jessica, Terry, and Greg.

4. Why are none of the males in figure 5.2 shown as carriers of hemophilia?

Males cannot carry hemophilia because it is an X-linked disease and males only have a single X chromosome. If the male has an X, he has the disease.

5. What is the probability that Marcy and Tom will have any child with hemophilia (irrespective of sex)? Show how you calculate this.

The probability of Marcy and Tom having a child with hemophilia is 12.5%. This is because Marcy has a 50% chance of being a carrier. Marcy’s children in turn have a 50% chance of receiving a copy of the X chromosome. Thus, there is a 25% chance that any of the children would receive a copy of the recessive X allele from Marcy. Tom does not have hemophilia, so we know that the gene on his X chromosome is normal. Therefore, only Marcy and Tom’s sons could have hemophilia. The total probability of Marcy and Tom having a child with hemophilia is 12.5% which brakes down mathematically (0.5)(0.5)(0.5) = .125.

6. Suppose Marcy becomes pregnant and has an amniocentesis, a prenatal cell-sampling technique that can identify the sex of a child (among other things). She finds that she is going to have a baby girl. Should she be worried that the baby will have hemophilia? Why or why not? Suppose she decides to be sterilized after her baby’s birth, so she will have only this one child. Should she be concerned that her grandchildren will have hemophilia? Why or why not?

Marcy should not be worried that the baby girl will have hemophilia. Even if Marcy is a carrier she has a 50% probability, as well as Tom does not have hemophilia. Therefore, a baby girl would receive a copy of Tom’s X chromosome that does not have the allele for hemophilia.

7. Blood typing can help determine paternity. Suppose an unmarried woman gives birth, charges a certain man with being the father, and sues for child support. He demands blood tests, which show that the woman is type A, the baby is type A, and he is type B. Does this evidence rule him out as the father? Explain why or why not.

No, the evidence does not rule out the man as the father of the child. A person with blood type A may have both A and O, while a person with type B blood may have B and I. If both the woman and the man each have one O, the child could inherit an blood type A which would make the child blood Type A.

8. The drugs for cancer chemotherapy target rapidly dividing tumor cells, but also any other cells in the body that undergo rapid mitosis. In light of this, explain why these drugs often cause hair loss as a side effect.

Hair loss is often a side effect of chemotherapy because hair growth occurs by mitosis in the hair bulb. Since the drugs used for chemotherapy target rapidly dividing the drugs kill the mitotic cells of the hair bulb.

9. Based on the data in table 5.1, which type of cancer—colon or oral—do you think is more treatable (has the better prognosis)? Explain your reasoning.

According to table 5.1, oral cancer has a better prognosis because 27.3% of people with oral cancer die compared to almost 50% of people with colon cancer.

Nick Adams

...Nick Adams’ Journey to Recovery In the story “Big Two-Hearted River” by Ernest Hemingway, Nick Adams is a young man recovering from traumatic experiences he suffered during his past wartime experiences. Nick seems to be an outdoorsman and throughout the story, his mental recovery progresses and he begins to leave behind some tragic experiences from his past by escaping civilization and completely immersing himself in what he knows- nature. Nick’s escape from civilization into nature is not only a physical journey but a journey of healing and self renewal from his traumatic experiences. His journey allows him to first retreat into physical activity in order to clear his mind, begin to process and accept his traumas, and eventually return to himself and civilization. At the beginning of Nick’s excursion, the narrator describes, in detail, Nick’s actions as he goes about his trip. In doing so, the narrator focuses on Nick’s physical actions rather than focusing on Nick’s thoughts and feelings. He allows the readers to see that Nick is avoiding his emotions and is allowing himself to be absorbed in his physical activity as a form of therapy. By returning to nature and activities he is familiar with, Nick can just go through the motions without letting his thoughts and feelings surface: “He felt he left everything behind, the need for thinking, the need to write, other needs. It was all back of him.” (210) Here the narrator shows Nick attempting to escape from civilization and...

...branders of MTV, and for Nickelodeon's extensive 1984 rebranding) to come up with programming ideas. After being presented with over 200 episodes of The Donna Reed Show (a 1950s sitcom which Laybourne despised), Goodman and Seibert conceived the idea of the "first oldies TV network." They modeled the new evening and overnight programming block on the successful oldies radio format, "The Greatest Hits of All Time," and branded the block with their next evolution of MTV- and Nickelodeon-style imagery and bumpers. Head programmer Debby Beece led the team to the name "Nick at Nite" for the new block; a logo originally conceived for the block was based on Nickelodeon's "pinball" logo introduced in 1981, which was discontinued with that network's rebrand. Fred/Alan developed the original logo with Tom Corey and Scott Nash of Boston advertising firm Corey McPherson Nash, creators of the well-recognized Nickelodeon orange logo (Nick at Nite's logo design would maintain a separate visual...

Nick Lesson Case

...Overview This article looks into the details with regards to the collapse of one of world’s oldest (~233 years old) and most respectable bank in London, Barings Bank on 26 Feb 1995 due to uncontrolled and well-concealed derivatives trading arising from ethical improprieties of a person called Nick Leeson in their Singapore office. End result is ~$1.4 billion in losses. On the surface, we may be tempted to conclude that the blame rests solely on him but an in-depth & analytical mind would ask the simple question on “how is it possible that this one man was able to cripple a financial giant?” Further possible questions which would pop up would be “What was the senior management’s role in this situation and did they contribute to the demise? How effective were the internal control systems and was the Singapore operations managed effectively? etc” In short, for this incident to happen, it involved more than one factor and similarly for this to be avoided, it also involved more than one lapse or system to be further reinforced and closed. As such, let’s take a deeper look into these aspects in the subsequent paragraphs. Factors behind the collapse of Barings Bank Nick Leeson started well as a star trader and was tasked as SIMEX floor manager by Barings to manage the Singapore trading operations to profit from low risk arbitrage opportunities with derivatives contracts between SIMEX and Japan’s Osaka Exchange. Arbitrage involves going long in one market and short in the other...

How to Be Good -' Nick Hornby

...English Essay “How to be Good” is written by Nick Hornby in 2001, and they store is about an average family. One day the narrator, whose name is Katie, is in a dilemma. Her husband David has given their son’s computer away to the women’s refuge: without consulting her or their two kids. David thought it was greedy to have two computers in the house when those women and their children didn’t even have one. This action of David’s has, inevitable, made the children upset, because they now have to share one computer, instead of having their own. Katie ends the argument with the following statement ‘’you can’t blackmail your own children like that’’ In the end all parts calm down, and David manages to see that he has made a mistake and he apologizes. But there is still something that bugs Kate. A part of Katie wants the computer back, because it was a Christmas present to her son and they worked really hard to buy it, but another part of her knows that her husband only did a good deed with good intentions. She is also doing something for the greater good by helping those women and letting them keep Tom’s computer. This is concluded from the following quotation; “I don’t know what to say (…) What is there for me to be angry about?” (pp. 1, lines 31-33). Here she asks herself how she can be angry, when David just did a decent thing. This is the first part where you can see she is in a bit of dilemma. Katie is in conflict with herself because she does not know what to do and...

...SOCI 2040 6.0G Sociological Theory TA: Jonathan Adjemian Nick Kozlowski Symbolic Interactionnalism and Dramaturgy: Goffman and Russel Hochschild Goffman is known for the development of dramaturgy, which approaches social life in the sense one would observe a play. When individuals meet, they read each other’s information to bring preconceived understanding into play. Information they are interested in are general socio-economic status, their conception of self, attitude, competence, trustworthiness, etc. Information about the individual is obtained so that the situation can be defined, allowing prediction of what will happen next, and to understand the situation. The term performance refers to all activity of an individual that is observed by an “audience”. The individual gives meaning to themselves through this performance as well as giving impressions to others, which are them reflected back to the individual. For example, a teacher who gives a poor lecture may reflect on himself through the bored reaction of his students. Setting is where such an interaction takes place, different settings have different actors which may lead an individual to act differently. We act differently around friends then we would in a professional workplace, or may act differently based simply on who is present. Appearance is meant to portray to the audience the performer’s social status, social state or role, which can be determined by uniform, gender, age, etc. Goffman describes 3 different...

...Hi The articles "Freedom of Speech: Missouri Knights of the Ku Klux Klan v. Kansas City" and "Freedom of Religion: Lyng v. Northwest Indian Cemetery Protective Association" both engage in conflicts pertaining to the First Amendment in the Bill of Rights.  "Freedom of Speech: Missouri Knights of the Ku Klux Klan v. Kansas City" is an article about the KKK's attempt to spread their beliefs through a public access cable television channel. Dennis Mahon and Allan Moran, both of the KKK, asked to be broadcasted on air in 1987, and the whole situation led to a major problem. The KKK is known for its killings, prejudice, and cross burnings, and they wanted to be shown on television to further spread their message. The First Amendment states the right to the freedom of speech, but many of the community members had a problem with the whole situation. People with race relations, local leaders, and members of the cable company did not want to grant the KKK the right to appear on air. Black ministers and important politicians were not happy with the KKK's request to voice their opinions. The KKK complied with all of the rules that were presented by the cable company, even when they were told to create a locally produced show and receive training in video production. They happily obeyed the regulations and didn't cause additional problems to what they were soon to face. The cable company studio was located in a neighborhood that was 95% black, and violence was a major concern for the cable...

Nick Saban

...Nick Saban If Nick Saban were running a company instead of a football program, he would be a top manager. Alabama football is big business, and it will continue to get bigger under Saban. “In 2006, the year before he arrived in Tuscaloosa, the athletic department brought in $67.7 million in revenue, mostly from football, and spent $60.6 million. Last year revenue was $124.5 million and expenditures were $105.1 million -- leaving a $19.4 million profit, according to figures compiled by USA Today. During Saban's tenure, Alabama has expanded the capacity of Bryant-Denny Stadium from 92,000 to 101,000, including the addition of new luxury (i.e., more expensive) seating”(O'Keefe, 2012). It was an obvious decision for the school to give him a two-year contract extension along with a significant raise earlier last year. With a salary package that averages $5.6 million a year over the next eight years, Saban is among the highest paid coaches in college football. “Nick Saban, the undisputed emperor of college football, has everything he could ever want in Tuscaloosa: Three national titles in four seasons; a great shot at another one a year from now; the best players; no static from anyone, including the browbeaten reporters who cover him; and the whole world kissing his feet”(Silver, 2013). Nick Saban is no doubt one of the best college football coaches in America. His passion, work ethic, persistence, and humility have got him to where he is today. These characteristics started when...

Nick Vujicic

...would you do if you didn't have either arms or legs? Will you still praise God for being who you are? If you wondering about what kind of hero that I’m going to tell you about, be prepared, because you’ll be amazed. Nick was born in Melbourne, Australia, on December 4, 1982. His birth was a big shock for every single person of his family. He had no limbs: no legs and no arms. The doctors couldn’t find any reason why that happened. Nick’s dad was a priest. People who he led in church were very sad. They gave sympathy to Nick’s dad and helped strengthen him. But they started to ask themselves, if God is love potion, why did he allow this kind of thing to happen to obedient people like Nick’s parents? At first, Nick’s dad thought that his little baby wouldn’t have a long life. But Nick proved them all wrong. Although he wasn’t like most babies, he was a very healthy baby. This fact made people worry about Nick’s future. When Nick began his study at school, he always tried to live like other kids, though at first he had to face refusals and mockeries from them. Unlimited love and prayers from his parents made Nick strong and then he could pass hard times. Slowly, his friends accepted Nick the way he was. God sent him new friends to accompany him. From his dad, Nick learned that God always loves and takes care of every single person. But his child’s mind asked about the truth of that theory. He realized that among all of his friends, he looked so weird, and he was frustrated. He felt...

...Nick Gill The Creative Director. I chose to write about Nick Gill as to my opinion he is the most interesting figure in Advertising industry.I guess it also because I get a chance to meet and work with his team on one of the commercials for the Lynx. Which was absolutely amazing experience. (http://uk.adforum.com/creative-work/ad/player/34485218) This commercial was a part of a massive and extensive Axe Apollo Campaign, (http://uk.adforum.com/creative-work/ad/player/34489021) where they decided to sent an ordinary guy to the space as a part of vision of the Axe/Lynx Brand. This shows an exceptional thinking an originality of ideas of BBH Agencyand Nick Gill contribution as part of it, with cooperation with Unilever Company. It definitely gave a Brand an enormous exposure and took advertising to a completely new level. One of the newest Axe campaigns that Nick Gill is taking credit for, could be found here :http://www.adweek.com/adfreak/never-thought-wed-see-heres-axe-ad-has-two-men-kissing-162360 What is so contradictory and slightly shocking, is that at some point, a main character is kissing a girl, and a second later he is kissing a guy. That is something that we never saw on TV commercial before. Thats a break through, that is when rules get broken, that when the fun begins. As few of the industry life mantras that Nick is believing into is : being an open-minded, break the rules, and stay young! I would like to starwith t taking a deeper insight into the advertising...

Nick Vujicic

...I found Nick Vujicic's video "I love living life, I am happy" to be truly inspirational and extremely passionate. He is a man, without a doubt in my mind, that is truly happy. I believe every word that the man had said pertaining to his own happiness. He himself has over-come so many external obstacles, that we as people, that have arms and legs, wouldn't think twice about having to worry about on a DAILY basis. Vujicic has turned so many external obstacles, walking, dressing himself, walking up stairs, learning how to swim and golf all without using any arms, nor legs, and turned them into external motivation which then has motivated him internally. Imagine daily life without the use of arms or legs, it's nearly impossible to even perceive for me at this point, and he does it everyday. He is thankful for being alive, he is not bitter nor vidictive towards his short-comings. He is an extremely humble man, having overcome many doubts and fears, being able to stand without any arms or legs, that really got to me. He also didn't have one negative thing to say about his life during the whole video, to my knowledge. He knew who he was and he was in complete control of his own life, doing things he loved, being a motivational speaker, being as happy as I could possibly perceive another human being to be. He is without a doubt one of the most influential self-motivational speaker's that I have ever seen in my...
