Nike

Nike is a very well known sporting footwear and apparel company. The company is a multinational corporation with headquarters located in Beaverton, Oregon. Nike is the leading supplier of sporting footwear and apparel in the world. They employ more than 44,000 people worldwide including countries such as the United States, Thailand, and China. The brand is most recognized by their logo, the swoosh, and their slogan “Just Do It”. Nike was founded in 1964 by Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight. The company was originally named Blue Ribbon Sports and in 1978 was renamed Nike after the Greek goddess of victory. In the early years the company worked as a distributor for a Japanese shoe maker. Eventually the bond between the two companies dissolved and Nike began work on its own line of footwear in 1971. Nike has since became one of the world’s largest companies and has acquired the companies Cole Haan, Hurley, Converse, and Umbro due to its success. The company is now publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol NKE. Large corporations such as Nike are held to general rules regarding how they conduct their business called the Social Responsibilities of Business. The four rules that companies have to follow are to maximize profits, moral minimum, stakeholder interest, and corporate citizenship. When businesses make decisions they need to keep their shareholders in mind. That is what the first theory of social responsibility, maximize profits, entails. Shareholders hold stock in the company and should be able to with confidence. Making decisions that affect profit in a negative way would be unfair to the shareholders. It is the company's duty to maximize the money they make for the people that hold stock in their company. The next rule, moral minimum, pertains to the company’s responsibility to refrain from causing harm to others.

In an effort to become one of the world’s leading designers, marketers, and distributors of athletic footwear, apparel, equipment, and accessories, Nike Inc. started with two visionary men who transformed themselves into one of the top selling brands in the athletic shoe industry. Through taking chances and understanding customers needs, Nike Inc. has established a large market position and strong brand equity. Nike Inc. understood early in its history that aligning its products with top athletes like Tiger Woods, Lance Armstrong and Michael Jordan, would propel the Nike brand to the very top. Nike also fostered endorsements with both individuals and associations like the NFL. Nike also takes into consideration the impact of giving back, having a positive Corporate Social Responsibility and being environmentally conscious. At the same time Nike experienced setbacks due to their dependence on third party manufacturers and having limited control. Nike Better World CSR Campaign targets smaller waste output (carbon footprint) and paying closer attention to the way their products are being manufactured (labor force) helping Nike to get back in good standing with consumers. Because, the market for sporting goods is intensely competitive, it is important for Nike to realize that it is not just the young “hip” generation that is going to keep them on top. The older “Baby Boomers” can help them to succeed too; this generation is known for...

Ancient Art

... form and content of the pieces as well as compare them to one another. The artworks chosen for this essay are: The Nike of Samothrace (Greek) and a funerary sculpture (African) made by the Bara or Sakalava people of Madagascar, Africa. When it comes to ancient art, there are many different cultures that can be compared and interpreted with one another. The subjects of this essay come from ancient Greek art and ancient African art. Greek art mostly depicted humanism, gods, power, harmony, order, adoration, etc. It served as a symbolization of political, religious, and/or ethical purposes. Greek art upheld spiritual views as well as unity and the dedication to great rulers. In a sense, Greek and African art are similar in many way with only a few differences. African art depicted deep spiritual and religious views. It also expresses the true respect for the human figure (humanism) as Greek art does. Sculptures of warriors and powerful people were often made to hold their spirits in a way of making them live on forever. African art expressed harmony and balance as well as vigor in detail and orientation. The first artwork to be explored will be the Nike “Victory of Samothrace”. (The Meaning of Greek Art, 2012). (Evans, 2010). This is a three-dimensional sculpture that was built between 220 and 185 BC in adoration/celebration of the Greek victory goddess Nike. It was made with Parian marble with a finished color of gray. The detail of the statue showed definite lines, wrinkles...
